NMH Students Testify Before Congress on Darfur

GILL, MA— Two Northfield Mount Hermon School juniors testified before Congress Thursday on the situation in Darfur. Nicholas Anderson of Conway and Ana Slavin of Sherborn, MA, developed a fundraising competition among high schools across the nation to raise money for refugees in Darfur, Sudan. Dollars for Darfur raised $306,000 for Save Darfur and other humanitarian organizations.

Using social networking programs such as Facebook and MySpace, the duo told the National Security and Foreign Affairs Subcommittee of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform that the challenge helped more than 2,000 high schools across the country raise money for Darfur relief. Evan Abrams of Guilford, VT, led the fundraising at NMH, which won the competition, raising more than $15,000. Two students from each of the top 10 fundraising high schools were in Washington last week to lobby their elected representatives for action in Darfur, be it divesting from companies that do business there, or sending a substantial United Nations force to quell the violence.

Nick and Ana also appeared on CNN Thursday and were the Person of the Week, a segment of the ABC Evening News, on Friday.
