Lessons from Ladakh at NMH
GILL, MA—Ned Lebo will give a State of the World Address Nov. 8 at Northfield Mount Hermon School on the semester he spent teaching and learning in Ladakh, India, a developing region in the mountainous state of Kashmir. Students in 1988 founded an organization there called Student’s Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) that has made incredible progress on a shoestring budget. The group has designed and constructed of solar-powered schools and has advocated for renewable energy and appropriate technology. The Week (India’s version of Time) named SECMOL founder, Sonam Wangchuk, Man of the Year in 2001.
Lebo holds a master’s degree in ecological teaching and learning from Lesley University and a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College. He has been teaching at Proctor Academy for 16 years, during which he received a number of environmental teaching awards. His address will take place Nov. 6 at 6:45 pm in the Rhodes Room in Beveridge Hall.
