NMH Welcomes Literary Scholar with Expertise in Bob Dylan’s Lyrics

February 1, 2006

Gill, MA--Northfield Mount Hermon School will host a talk by Christopher Ricks, an authority on such luminaries of the English language as Milton, Keats, Tennyson, Beckett, T.S. Eliot--and Bob Dylan.

Ricks, the Oxford professor of poetry, and a professor at Boston University, lumps the folk genius from Tin Pan Alley with Britain’s finest wordsmiths. In Ricks’ latest book, Dylan’s Visions of Sin (HarperCollins Publishers, 2005), he treats the lyrics of such songs as “Lay Lady Lay” to comparisons with poems by John Donne and Eliot. Ricks was called “The best there is,” by the New Yorker’s Alex Ross.

“Professor Ricks is astonishingly learned and so exuberantly articulate that he can give life to nearly any subject he addresses,” says NMH English teacher Jerry Reneau. Last time Ricks was at the school, he spoke on Dylan, the human genome project, the place of fact in fiction, Beckett and dying, Othello and lying, and plagiarism.

Ricks will speak as part of NMH’s “State of the World” series on February 12 at 6:45 pm in the Rhodes Room of Beveridge Hall on the Mount Hermon campus in Gill. The public is welcome to this free event.

Northfield Mount Hermon School is an independent coeducational boarding and day school in Gill, MA.
