NMH Presents Film Series for Black History Month

February 7, 2006

Gill, MA—Northfield Mount Hermon School is screening four films in February to honor Black History Month. The films, which are free and open to the public, will be followed by panel discussions.

First up is Sankofa (1993) on February 10 at 7:30 pm at Blake Auditorium. Written, directed and produced by Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima, Sankofa is a film about the physical and psychic horrors of chattel slavery, and eventually the redemptive power of community and rebellion. Spike Lee’s Bamboozled (2000) plays February 12 at 4 pm in Cottage III. In this dark, biting satire of the television industry, a frustrated African American TV writer, played by Damon Wayans, proposes a blackface minstrel show in protest, but to his chagrin it becomes a hit.

In Lackawanna Blues (2005), a story fueled by R&B, a young boy's life is shaped by love and the stories of characters in a boarding house in 1960s Lackawanna, New York. The film, with a star-studded cast, including Golden Globe winner S. Epatha Merkerson, screens February 19 at 4 pm in Cottage III. Black Is, Black Ain’t (1994) is next. This powerful film asks “What is black, black enough or too black?” by examining all the “isms” that exist in the black community. Is there an essential black identity? Panelists aim to find out February 20 at 4 pm in Cottage III.
