UMass Choral Groups to Perform at Northfield Mount Hermon
November 22, 2004
NORTHFIELD, Mass—The University of Massachusetts Amherst
Chamber Choir and Madrigal Singers will be performing a concert at
the Northfield Mount Hermon School on Sunday, December 5.
In a nod to NMH’s “jazz” theme this year, the music will observe
how jazz has influenced classical choral music. The Chamber Choir
will perform Claude Debussy’s “Trois Chansons,” Carlos
Guastavino’s “Indianas,” Edwin Fissinger’s “Lux aeterna,” Ricky
Ian Gordon’s “Three by Langston,” and two arrangements by the
internationally admired composer Alice Parker, of Hawley, MA:
“Sometimes I Feel” and “Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye.” The Madrigal
Singers will sing secular and sacred music by Renaissance
composers des Prez, de Rore, Lassus, and Palestrina dealing with
subjects such as fleas, light, and kissing.
As a special feature, the NMH Singers will join the university
choir in singing selections from the Earth Mass/Missa Gaia by Paul
Winter, Paul Halley, and Jim Scott. The choirs recently sang the
entire work at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York
City.
The concert will begin at 4 pm at the Memorial Chapel on the
school’s Mount Hermon campus. For more information, please call
413-498-3281.
