NMH Singers Present an Evening of Madrigals

February 11, 2005

NORTHFIELD, Mass.— It’s been almost 500 years since the last true Renaissance evening of wine, food, and song took place, but the Northfield Mount Hermon Singers will soon transport you back in time for a re-creation of how people enjoyed their evenings before television.

Typically, folks would gather at a home or meeting place and enjoy a sumptuous dinner. Afterward, the musicians in the group would sing light pieces known as madrigals. The NMH Singers will present such a madrigal dinner in the Mount Hermon music building on Saturday, February 19 at 7 pm. A three-course dinner, complete with dessert and wine, will be provided by chef Richard Plummer. Settings of Shakespeare texts will then be sung in full Renaissance costume. Shakespeare, Ben Johnson, and other characters from Elizabethan England will be joining the festivities.

All are welcome; the admission of $28.50 per person includes everything. Reservations may be made by e-mailing NMH Performing Arts Chair Sheila Heffernon at sheffernon@nmhschool.org. For more information, please call  (413) 498-3281.
