Grannis Receives NMH Service Award
NORTHFIELD, Mass.— Susanna Whitney Grannis of West Windham, VT
received the Distinguished Service Award from the Northfield
Mount Hermon School at the school’s recent alumni weekend. The
award honors an alumnus who has demonstrated outstanding career
achievement and service to humanity.
Grannis, whose professional name is Pflaum, is a member of the
NMH class of 1955 and has worked for many years as an educator,
education researcher, and teacher trainer. She cofounded
Children Affected by HIV/AIDS (CHABHA), an organization that
assists children in Africa who have lost their families to AIDS.
Grannis is a graduate of Radcliffe, the Harvard Graduate School
of Education, and Florida State University, where she received
her PhD in 1971. She served as professor and dean of the Honors
College at the University of Illinois-Chicago, dean of the
School of Education at Queens College of the City of New York,
and then dean of the Bank Street College of Education. She has
written numerous articles and books on adolescence, diversity,
and education issues.
Through the Episcopal diocese of Vermont, Grannis has made
members of local parishes aware of the needs of African
children; some have organized fundraising activities to support
CHABHA. She also participates in local government and is active
in the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
