Columnist Eisner Talks Voting at Northfield Mount Hermon
School
NORTHFIELD, Mass.—Since 1988, Northfield Mount Hermon School
has sponsored the nationwide VOTES (Voting Opportunities for
Teenagers in Every State) Project to teach young people about the
voting process and its significance. Representatives from every
state work for a month, leading up to a mock election just before
the general election. In each of the four elections since,
students have successfully predicted the eventual winner, with 75
to 80 percent of eligible students voting—almost twice the
national turnout average.
As part of VOTES 2004, on Sunday, October 10, Philadelphia
Inquirer columnist Jane Eisner will visit NMH to discuss the
importance of youth voting. Eisner, whose recently published book
Taking Back the Vote: Getting American Youth Involved in Our
Democracy, is the founder of First Vote, a nonpartisan voter
education program for high school students. This event is open to
the public and will take place at 7 pm in the Auditorium on the
Northfield campus.
