Brookses Receive NMH Morrow Award

NORTHFIELD, Mass.— Virginia K. Brooks and Edwin E. Brooks, formerly of Northfield, were given the Northfield Mount Hermon William H. Morrow Award at the school’s recent alumni weekend festivities. Named in honor of former faculty member Bill Morrow, the award goes to nonalumni who have had a significant impact on the life and spirit of Northfield Mount Hermon School.

Wife and husband, Virginia and Edwin came to NMH in 1969 to teach religious studies. They helped to expand the curriculum so that religion was taught alongside topics in nature, environmental studies, and feminist theory. As dorm residents, they learned firsthand of their students’ thoughts and concerns and were particularly masterful in resolving tensions arising from the realities of a newly permissive society. Travel to India and other places where community life reflected a religious orientation gave fresh perspectives for the spiritual development of the NMH community. In 1985, they were appointed co-chaplains, a position they held for 13 years.

The Brookses recently retired and moved to Harrisville, New Hampshire.
