Nada/Mason Gallery Displays 9/11 Exhibit by Mary Bernstein
NORTHFIELD, Mass.—The Nada/Mason Gallery at Northfield Mount
Hermon School reopens for the season on September 8 with Breaking
News 9/11/01–9/11/02, a show by Amherst artist Mary Bernstein. The
exhibit runs until October 16.
Breaking News is an exhibit of 53 double-sided panels, each
representing one week of the year beginning 9/11/01 and ending
9/11/02. One side is a collage of news headlines and images
arranged with the artist’s personal material and reflections. The
other side is an original painting of the week. “We now are
beginning to see this important juncture through the perspective
of time,” says Bernstein. “We are living with the reactions that
flow from this dramatic event and witnessing the unfolding of its
historical impact. In an attempt to provide some context I have
also provided an overview of historical events from 1946-2004
(years of the artist’s lifetime) to give another perspective of
what came before, and some highlights of the years that have
followed.”
The Nada/Mason Gallery, which is open to the public, is located in
Bolger Arts Center on the Northfield campus. Hours are noon to 6
PM, daily. An open forum with Bernstein will be held at the
gallery on September 11 from 4 to 6 pm. For more information,
contact gallery director Lisa Schmitt at 498-3297, ldschmitt@nmhschool.org.
