Barber to Speak at NMH on Democracy and Terrorism
NORTHFIELD, Mass.— Benjamin R. Barber, the Gershon and Carol
Kekst Professor of Civil Society and Distinguished University
Professor at the University of Maryland, will be speaking on
“Democracy: Terrorism and Interdependence” as part of the
Northfield Mount Hermon State of the World lecture series on
Wednesday, April 6.
Barber is an internationally renowned political theorist. He
consults regularly with political and civic leaders in the
United States and Europe, including former Governor Howard Dean,
former President Bill Clinton, former Senator Bill Bradley, and
former President Roman Herzog of Germany. He has also consulted
with the Corporation for National Service, the United States
Information Agency, and the National Endowment for the
Humanities. He has written 17 books, including Strong Democracy
(1984), Jihad vs. McWorld (1995), and Fear’s Empire: War,
Terrorism and Democracy (2003).
Barber has been honored with a knighthood from the French
Government, the Berlion prize of the American Academy of Berlin,
and the Dewey Award.
The lecture will be in the Dolben Theatre on the school’s
Northfield campus. It will begin at 6:30 pm and will last
approximately 90 minutes. The public is invited.
