Algebra Project Founder to Speak at Northfield Mount Hermon

NORTHFIELD, Mass.— Robert P. Moses, a leader of the 1960’s Civil Rights movement and author of Radical Equations: Civil Rights from Mississippi to the Algebra Project, will speak at the Northfield Mount Hermon School on Monday, May 9.

Moses went to Mississippi in 1961 to organize black voters for the 1964 elections. Forty years later, he is running a national math literacy program called the Algebra Project. Moses sees the crisis in math literacy in poor communities as a civil rights issue, and feels that developing math skills is     a key to economic and civic equality. The Algebra Project began with Moses as the sole participant and is now a network of programs in 25 cities serving more than 40,000 children.

The lecture will start at 6:45 pm in Grandin Hall on the school’s Mount Hermon campus and run for about an hour with a reception following. Admission is free and the public is invited.
