Northfield Mount Hermon's 111th Sacred Concert
NORTHFIELD, Mass.— Northfield Mount Hermon School continues one
of its oldest traditions as it presents the 111th Concert of
Sacred Music on Sunday, May 15.
The concert serves not only as a time for revered music but also
as a chance for NMH alumni to return to their alma mater to join
faculty, staff, and students under the direction of Sheila L.
Heffernon, director of choral music and Steven Bathory-Peeler,
director of orchestral music. The Symphony Orchestra, Chamber
Orchestra, Concert Choir, Alumni Choir, Select Women’s Ensemble,
and NMH Singers will present a program with allusions to the
school’s transition to one campus next year.
Selections include Copland’s “The Promise of Living” from The
Tender Land; Fauré’s Requiem; Moore’s “Daniel, Daniel, Servant
of the Lord”; “Make Our Garden Grow” from Candide by Bernstein;
Handel’s Overture in D Major; and Wagner’s “Pilgrim’s Chorus”
from Tannhäuser. A special nod to the school’s Jazz! theme this
year showcases Arthur Herzog and Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the
Child” and a medley of “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” and “When the
Saints Go Marching In.” Rounding out the program will be “O
Northfield Beautiful” by Moody and Clarke, “The Northfield
Benediction” by Lucy Rider Meyer, and “Jerusalem” by Parry and
Blake. Additional composers to be heard are Schubert, Sibelius,
Whitacre, and Longfield.
The concert will take place at 2:30 pm in the Auditorium on the
school’s Northfield campus, and is free and open to all. For
more information, please call the music office at (413)
498-3281.
