Northfield Mount Hermon Speaker Addresses Religion and Politics
NORTHFIELD , Mass. —Northfield Mount Hermon alumnus William Scott Green
’64, professor of religion and dean of the college at the University of
Rochester , will deliver an address on “Religion, Politics, and Freedom:
The Challenges of Contemporary Civilization” on Wednesday, April 14 at
6:30 pm . The talk is part of the school’s continuing State of the World
seminar series and will take place in the Rhodes Room in Beveridge Hall on
the Mount Hermon campus. The event is free and open to the public.
A distinguished author and editor, Green is associate editor of the
HarperCollins Dictionary of Religion, named one of the 10 most influential
books published in 1995, and coeditor of The Religion Factor: An
Introduction to How Religion Matters. When asked about his experience as a
student at NMH, Green replied, “In the ’60s the school had a religion
requirement (called Bible) that emphasized the New Testament and
Christianity. Because I’m Jewish, the faculty gave me leeway and I was
able to read and write broadly about religions in addition to
Christianity, including my own. I’ve carried that experience and interest
with me ever since.”
There will be a question-and-answer session following Green’s talk and at
8 pm , audience members are invited to participate in informal
conversation with NMH faculty and Professor Green. The NMH State of the
World series was founded in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist
attack to foster dialogue between the school and local communities about
world events. Past speakers have included NMH faculty and local experts
such as Five College Professor of Peace and World Security Studies Michael
Klare.
