NORTHFIELD , Mass. —Peter Snedecor, teacher and coach at the Northfield Mount Hermon School , will visit schools and observe teacher training activities more than 4,500 miles from home in late April. Snedecor was selected to participate in a 12-day study tour to Latvia and Lithuania conducted by the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE), headquartered in New York City .

After a pre-departure program in Washington , D.C. , the group of 12 U.S. educators will travel to Riga in Latvia and then to Vilnius in Lithuania . The group is scheduled to visit schools, observe teacher training activities, and meet with Ministry of Education officials, educational administrators, and business leaders.

Participants will learn about the successes and challenges of delivering economic education in Latvia and Lithuania , countries undergoing dramatic transition; inform their Latvian and Lithuanian counterparts on how economic education is delivered in the United States ; and bring the experience back home to their colleagues, students, community and family members through formal presentations and informal discussions.

“I’m looking forward to talking to my counterparts in Latvia and Lithuania and having the opportunity to interact with their students,” Snedecor said. After returning from the study tour, he will incorporate the experience into his teaching of Advanced Placement Economics, conduct workshops on transitional economies in conjunction with the New England Chapter of NCEE, and give presentations to local civics groups, as well as to national conferences.

The study tour is part of the Cooperative Education Exchange Program (CEEP), a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Education in coordination with the U.S. Department of State. The aim of CEEP is to advance educational reform in economic education and civic education in the new democracies of the former Soviet Union and central and eastern Europe, and to help U.S. students and teachers better understand the global economy.
