The NMH Math Team has been increasing in popularity and interest over the past few years. There are about forty active students on the team, with three student captains sharing supervisory responsibilities. The team meets formally once a week to learn different areas of mathematics and practice with challenging problems. In addition, the captains and faculty advisor offer additional meetings for those who are eager to pursue their specific interests.
The team participates in many local, national and international mathematics competitions, which are fun, interesting, and often quite challenging. These competitions include:
- New England Math League (NEML)
- Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Math Meet at WPI, Worcester, MA
- Princeton University Math Competition (PUMAC)
- American Mathematics Competitions (AMC 10 and 12)
- Harvard-MIT November Tournament (HMNT), Cambridge, MA
- Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT), Cambridge, MA
Our results have been strong and improving each year. In the 2009-2010 school year, NMH placed 4th in the New England Math League, with approximately 190 New England schools competing, and 5th in the WPI Math Meet, with 90 schools in Massachusetts. In 2010-2011, NMH placed 11th in the Harvard-MIT November tournament, which is the most prestigious tournament for New England schools, out of 80 teams.
In addition to our participation in competitions, several members of the math team also run the NMH Weekly Puzzle, a fun activity open to everyone in the community: students, faculty, and staff. Small cash prizes are awarded at the end of each week for the quickest responders with correct solutions, and larger prizes are awarded to those who accumulate the most correct answers by the end of each academic semester.
The NMH Math Team is open to all students in every grade. New members at any level are welcome. The goals are to promote the passion, curiosity, and learning of mathematics, and to be competitive and place high in the competitions.
