English was my favorite subject, so in freshman year I joined The Bridge. I did it for fun, but then I became news editor, and then editor-in-chief. You’re always learning something new, whether it’s interviewing someone you don’t know, covering an unfamiliar sport, or discovering what you actually think about a topic by writing an op-ed piece on it. The summer before my senior year I went to Northwestern University’s National High School Institute for five weeks. We attended lectures by working journalists and visited the Chicago Tribune offices. Then we covered a 4th of July parade. Walking around and interviewing strangers really gave us a chance to see what we could do.
