Farm Program
The NMH farm is a small, diversified New England farm. We grow raspberries, pumpkins, lavender, rosemary, asparagus,
and flowers. Maple sugaring is our largest single agricultural endeavor.
Our 2,200 taps produce about 24,000 gallons of sap, which boils down to
approximately 600 gallons of syrup. Distilling lavender and
rosemary and producing cider syrup and cider jelly are recent
projects on the farm. We've also begun a dairy operation that produces
milk and cheese, and we raise and use draft and driving horses.
Students are an integral part of our school farm. Thirty-five
students work each term for four and a half hours per week. These students
harvest asparagus and raspberries; press cider; clean
stalls; ride and drive horses; milk cows; collect and boil sap;
cut wood; grow seedlings; weed; harvest flowers; and make
raspberry jam, maple candy, maple cream, and lavender soap.
Sugaring season offers students a unique opportunity. Three
shifts of seven students per shift work for six days during spring
vacation. They work eight to 12 hours each day collecting sap and making
maple syrup. This work experience fulfills each student's work
requirement for either the winter or spring term.
The farm is staffed by manager Richard Odman. Richard has been farm manager since
1978, and he thoroughly enjoys working with our students in
the context of our school farm. He has a BA in history
and a master of divinity degree.
