John Carroll is a 1989 graduate of Northfield Mount Hermon and has been coaching basketball at NMH since 2001. At NMH, John has coached over 60 Division I basketball players and many more college basketball players. He has led the NMH basketball program to the distinction of being the best combination of academics and basketball in the country. NMH currently has 28 players in Division I including the University of Notre Dame, Bucknell University, University of Louisville, University of Massachusetts, LaSalle University, George Washington University, Howard University, American University, Lafayette College, Pepperdine University, 3 at the University of Vermont, Gonzaga University and more. Additionally, NMH has sent more players to the Ivy League over the past 4 years than any other school in the United States. In 2010-2011, NMH will have 8 alums suiting up in the Ivys. NMH will have student-athletes playing basketball at the defending Ivy League champs, Cornell University, Brown University, 3 at Dartmouth College and 3 at Harvard University.
NMH has been ranked among the top ten teams in the United States for the past 10 years. In 2007, NMH finished the year 23-5 and 7th in the country with a Boys' Club of New York Holiday Tournament championship over Michael Beasley and Notre Dame, who were the eventual National Champions. The 2009 team won the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by the Blair School with wins over Hun and Blair and won the NMH Holiday Tournament with a win over St. Mark's and Lawrenceville. They also went undefeated at the National Prep School Tip-Off Classic with one of their wins over Fork Union. For the second consecutive year, the NMH basketball team is ranked 5th in the country during the season.
Additionally, John was invited to join the Reebok Coaches Group and the Boys' Club of New York Basketball Advisory Board (14 members) with ex-NBA players Len Elmore and Oscar Robertson and others. Finally, this past spring, John was asked to be the head coach of the prep school All-Star game hosted by the Hall of Fame at Springfield College. Also, this past spring John represented NMH at the 2nd Annual Academic All-American game in Los Angeles. This was the 2nd year John was awarded with this honor. John was the head coach for the East national team. Going forward John is on the selection committee for the Academic All-American game.
Before coming to NMH for a postgraduate year, he graduated from Poly Prep in Brooklyn, NY, and played AAU ball with the Bronx Gauchos. Averaging 27 points per game, he was named MVP of NMH's 1988-1989 squad which finished 17-6. After NMH, John went on to Assumption College where he finished his career as one of the most prolific three-point scorers in NCAA history. He ended his career as Assumption's No. 6 all-time scorer with 1551 points and still holds most of their three-point records. He finished his college career with 342 three-pointers. John returned to NMH in 2001 after a career on Wall Street. He is the Director of Internal Relations working in the Admission Office. John currently serves as the Parents' Council Faculty Chair for excellence in the NMH athletic program.
