Finding Inner Peace with Allan Lokos
"Finding Inner Peace in a World of Conflict," a lecture by Allan Lokos, the author of Pocket Peace: Effective Practices for Enlightened Living, will take place Tuesday, March 2, from 6:45–8:00 pm in the Rhodes Room, Beveridge.
Allan Lokos is the founder/guiding teacher of the Community Meditation Center in New York City. His teachers have included Sharon Salzberg, Joseph Goldstein, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Stephen Batchelor. He was formerly a professional singer appearing in the original Broadway companies of Oliver! and Pickwick, among others.
Pocket Peace is a collection of more than 50 concise spiritual practices distilled from a Buddhist teaching called the Paramis (Perfection Practices). They can help us think, speak, and act more wisely. While small enough to fit in a pocket, they are powerful enough to change a life. Find more information at www.pocketpeace.com.

Baroque Violin Recital
Tatiana Daubek, class of 2000, will present a recital of baroque violin music this Thursday, March 25 at 6:45 pm in Raymond Concert Hall. Tatiana will perform with her colleague Akiko Sato who is a professional harpsichordist. The program will last about 45 minutes. Tatiana has been performing with professional Baroque orchestras all around the country. Her bio. is below.
Thanks to Ted Thornton and the Independence Masters program for funding this program. Admission is free. All are welcome.
A Northfield Mount Hermon Alumna, Tatiana Daubek holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas and a Master of Music degree from Boston University. Her principal teachers and inspirations have come from Julia Bushkova, Cynthia Roberts, Dana Mazurkevich, and Elizabeth Blumenstock. Ms. Daubek is currently pursuing a career as a Baroque violinist because she feels there is an endless amount of variety and color within the style and wants to explore those attributes to their furthest. As a free-lance artist, Ms. Daubek plays with various period ensembles throughout the country including Boston Baroque, Handel and Haydn Society, New Trinity Baroque, Concert Royal, Les Bostonades, Musica Maris, and L’Academie. A founding member, Ms. Daubek also plays with Cambridge Concentus, an upcoming period ensemble having recently finished their first international tour in Japan of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, under the direction of Joshua Rifkin. In her spare time, Tatiana enjoys photography and dancing Argentine Tango.

Science Speaker Series
A leading advocate for evolutionary theory will kick off the opening event in Northfield Mount Hermon’s new speaker series, Science for the 21st Century.
Dr. Kenneth Miller, professor of biology at Brown University, will present “Time to Abandon Darwin? Evolution in an Age of Genomics” on Tuesday, March 30, at 7 pm in Raymond Concert Hall, Rhodes Arts Center. The talk is free and open to the public.
In his lecture, Dr. Miller, a well-known author, speaker, and critic of intelligent design, will discuss how recent developments in genomics research have added to the evidence that supports evolutionary theory. Dr. Miller has been featured in the New York Times, NOVA, and The Colbert Report. He is also the co-author of the textbook used by the introductory biology classes at Northfield Mount Hermon school.
Dr. Miller’s book, Finding Darwin’s God, is currently available in the school’s bookstore. Dr. Miller will be available to sign copies of his book following the Tuesday night lecture.
Dr. Miller will follow his public talk with class visits on March 31 and a lecture for students and faculty entitled “Darwin, God, and Design: America's Continuing Problem with Evolution.” The second talk, which is not open to the public, will explore evolutionary theory through the lenses of science, faith, religion, and politics.
The Science for the 21st Century speaker series brings nationally known speakers to the NMH campus to promote interest in science and scientific topics. Members of the NMH community, including students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends, are welcome to attend the series lectures.
