Math and technology were always my things. But when I took Introduction to Java my freshman year, wow! Now I’m enthralled with programming. It’s like a logic puzzle; I just have to find the right tools to solve it. I can work for hours on a program and not even notice time has gone by. It’s the same thing with Latin and linguistics. When I get into reading about computers and languages, how they’ve evolved, how they’re connected, well, let’s just say, I’m never bored.
NMH has great advanced courses. My teachers love what they teach and and they are thorough. Really, no matter how tough the subject, they make it stick. Plus, they’re in it with you. I had a teacher once tell me that every time he taught a topic, he learned more about it himself. And you feel that—that it’s an exploration together; you’re not just being lectured at.
I took the most advanced level of math at NMH, Multivariable Calculus. We did things like four-dimensional integration, a complicated method that basically lets you measure variations in, say, a block of metal as you heat it. It’s fascinating to me, to be able to observe and measure changes.
I guess I could do that with myself, too, because I’m certainly different now. My confidence has really grown and I’ve discovered so many things I’m interested in and things I’m good at. And I’ve learned to take people as they come, without prejudices or pre-existing ideas. I now accept people as they are, not as they should be. And that includes me as well, which is a very nice change.
