Greetings from the Director of Athletics

Message from the Head of School Thomas Sturtevant

Northfield Mount Hermon has a rich history in athletics: We’ve had countless New England champions and several future Olympians play on our fields. Student-athletes here have the chance to compete against top opponents, get great exposure to college athletic recruiters, and work with incredible coaches who are often their teachers off the field. Our students learn how to push themselves harder and farther than they ever imagined possible.

The physical education and athletics program at NMH is an integral part of the overall educational experience. We offer each student, regardless of ability, the opportunity to experience growth, accomplishment and success at his or her own skill level. All NMH students participate in at least one athletic activity each year – typically as a member of one of our 60 teams competing in 21 sports over three seasons. In addition to interscholastic teams, NMH has club teams and intramural programs as well as an extensive outdoor education program offering activities that are an alternative to traditional sports and PE activities.

NMH student-athletes are challenged and supported by experienced faculty-coaches who promote and deepen understanding of the sport they coach and they foster, through example and mentoring, a deep commitment to teammates and school. They have knowledge and experience that makes them extremely effective in preparing their teams for a next game while helping individual athletes progress to the next level in their athletic development.

Because of our size and location, NMH athletic teams play against all the best schools in New England. From as far south as Taft to as far east as Exeter, our competitors represent the best of New England preps. Our varsity teams play New England Class A competition, with exposure to interested college and university coaches who regularly recruit students from NMH, while our developmental teams play at a level that allows our students to hone skills and gain experience in whatever sport they choose.

The athletic program at Northfield Mount Hermon offers our students the opportunity to engage in the core of an NMH education – that is, developing the muscles of the head, the heart and the hand. Whether you are an accomplished athlete, with your sights set on collegiate athletics, or a novice, looking to enjoy the experience of being on a team and working for a common goal, we have a place for you!
