WWNEPSSA Fall Meeting
September 16, 2004

Minutes

Welcome, thanks and introductions
  • Treasurer’s Report:
o       Referee’s Session with Mark-    Penalty for being out of the team area can be a yellow card

-    Goalie’s uniform must be different from all others (including socks)

-    Shin-guards: No more than 2” above ankles, under socks, not altered from manufacturers specifications

-    Jewelry: NOTHING except medical bracelets (completely taped) and religious symbols (off chains and taped to inside of shirts)

-    no hairclips, no prewrap with knots in it

  • Follow-up discussion about whether they are to follow our rules because we are paying them or Federation rules.
-    We pay the fees, they should play our rules

-    report any refs who don’t comply with our requests

  • Substitutions:
-    on your throw

-    on the other team’s throw if they choose to sub.

-    on ANY end line

-    make sure that the coaches remind the refs before the game

  • Follow-up discussion about having a memo to give to the refs at the beginning of the game with our rules on it. – Charlie will draft.  Perhaps we should send it to the assigners too.
  • It will include:
-    The fact that we follow NCAA rules except:

-    substitutions

-    scoreboard is the official time if it is present

  • Membership:
-    Poughkeepsie Country Day – unanimously voted into WWNEPSSA

-    Harvey and Greenwich Academy – unanimously approved for probationary season

-    Masters (CT) called to report not being able to make it

-    Masters (NY) was put on warning last year and didn’t call re: today’s meeting, will be given one more chance.  They have had personnel changes and this may have affected things – Jeff will contact them to let them know.

  • Score Reporting:
-    Must be made to Jeff by BOTH teams immediately after the game.

-    Check the web-site for updates and more information.

  • All League Selections:
-    Make sure to tell the other coach who their “player(s) of the game” were

-    Coach’s keep track of their own votes (Jeff is not responsible for this)

-    Top two selections (top three for the top teams) must be e-mailed to Jeff by 11/4/2004

-    All League games are on 11/14/2004 at Westminster

  • New Saylor System:
-    Boys and Field Hockey both use it

-    Did research to see how it would have affected us (significance not conclusive)

-    We would need to add a third division and cup – Large, Middle and Small

-    Takes a lot more into account than current system

-    Will cost about $100 more

  • Comments:
-    Haven’t heard complaints from those who already are using it

-    Like it from a small school point of view

-    Disadvantage for big schools – may have long term scheduling consequences for some schools

-    Does not account for “card” accumulation (ie: point deductions for yellow and red)

-    We’re the only league around still using old system

-    Does not affect the NEPSAC standings at all – they use a completely different formula for tournament placements

  • Vote:
  • Passed – all in favor but two
  • League does not track cards – coaches on the honor system
New England Tournament

- Deadlines:

- Form #1 by 10/18/2004

- Form #2 by 11/8/2004

- Deadlines are FINAL

- We will stay with 2 normal overtimes, then 2 golden-goal overtimes, and then award co-champions if it is still tied (no shoot-outs) – the unlimited subs rule is in effect so it shouldn’t be a burden on the teams

Sizing

- The new sizing helps but “C” is still a big problem

            - A = 250+

            - B = 249-170

            - C = 110-169

            - D = below 110

- Schools are allowed to self-classify by NEPSAC

- Some schools have historically played schedules with classes different from what strict number-classification would have dictated and have been allowed to play in that class’ tournament

Comments

- It used to be strictly by numbers but schools complained that the history of their program necessitates otherwise

- You may always play UP a class but must petition to play DOWN a class

- Schools choose their schedules and should have to follow the classifications either way

- We should take the following in to account in order: a) history, b) schedule, c) numbers

- You need to classify for three years at a time

- Some schools change sizes year to year

- Petitions should be made to Jeff and the committee chairs

- The sizing issue is ultimately for NEPSAC tournaments and thus at the control of the AOD’s and NEPSAC committees

- WWNEPSSA and NEPSAC have slightly different qualifications which sometimes causes problems

- Would adding a “Class E” help?

            - tournament problems: finding another site

            - logistical problems increase

            - would enough teams even apply / qualify to enter tournament?

            - is it possible to add a second tournament for class C? (ie: a C1 and a C2? A C-North and a C-South?) – still has the logistical problems with “Class E”

            - what about teams playing each other too many times in one season?

- Finals at Thayer this year (they have two new turf fields)

New Business

- If you have a scoreboard turned on it is ALWAYS the official time

- Hamden Hall is still looking for JV games

- Be careful with e-mails – somehow people have used our list as a virus-spreader
