2005 Season Weekly Reports

Feb. 23

The final MISL (Mt. Institute Ski League) race, a single-run giant slalom, was held at Eaglebrook's home mountain today.

The Hoggers concluded their season in fine fashion, building on the momentum of the past two weeks.  The newly-crowned New England champions boys' varsity team won their race, defeating Deerfield.  The girls had a strong race to come in second, and the boys' JV team placed first yet again and celebrated their league championship title in the JV division (the team's 6th league title since 1997).

JV:  The JV team once again crushed the competition, as NMH grabbed 4 of the top 6 positions behind strong runs by Kurt Thibault, McLaren Gilmore, Sam LaCroix, and Colin NewmanGabe Susca-Lopata put the icing on the victory with his 18th place finish.

McLaren Gilmore captured the top individual ranking for the whole season -- a great accomplishment!  Other guys who contributed this season to the terrific success of the JV team, which finished with an incredible 29-1 record:  Ian Campbell, Ellis Berner, Marc Colomer, Evan Hefner, and Nick Palmisano.

Girls:  Senior co-captain Brittany Sinclair skied in her final race.  She has been rock-solid this season and throughout her career here.  In 3 years on the varsity team, Brittany has finished 24 of 25 races -- the last fall occurring over two years ago!  She has finished in the top-6 in all 6 league races this year.  Brittany has scored more team points for NMH than any girl in at least the past 8 years.  Needless to say, she will be sorely missed.

Freshman sensation Eliza Davis had another great day, winning the race!  She finally broke through DA's domination of the top spots, and in so-doing became the first NMH girl to win a league alpine race in over 7 years!  Backing up Brittany and Eliza were Michaela Culver with a solid 12th place finish, and Sophia Toraby (15th) and Ashleigh Casey (16th), both with season-best results.  Senior co-captain Emily Krall's NMH skiing career also came to a close today, though she was sick and unable to attend the race.

Boys:  Alex Palma and Sam Waite continued to rule the hill at Eaglebrook, coming in 1-2 to lead their team to a 271-256 point victory over DA.  Rounding out the team scoring were Nick Carr (8th), Sam Wilson (10th), and Simon Cohn (13th), each demonstrating their best skiing of the season.  This team really came together at the end of the season, and today they rode their momentum into the final race with their best team result in league competition all season.

We say good-bye to PGs/seniors Palma, Carr, and Waite, who provided much of the firepower behind this team's great success.  Senior co-captain Sam Wilson also closed out his time on the team today, with a career-best performance.  It will be tough to replace these guys!

NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONS -- NMH BOYS' ALPINE SKI TEAM

The boys' alpine ski team won the class B New England Prep School Alpine Skiing Championships at Mount Snow today!  The team faced 12 other schools in today's meet, and turned in an impeccable performance as all the boys and girls flawlessly completed every run of the day -- all 40 of them.  This is virtually unheard of in ski racing.

The boys won the title (NMH's second championship in the past three years) by a mere 2 points over a strong squad from Avon, behind the powerful and consistent skiing of Alex Palma, Sam Waite, Nick Carr, Simon Cohn, Sam Wilson, and Sam LaCroix. Harv Schaefer and Ian Campbell supported the team as alternates but were not called into duty.

The girls also had a terrific performance today, placing 4th.  Eliza Davis, Brittany Sinclair, Michaela Culver, Christine Culver, and Emily Krall combined to have one of the best outings in recent years for the girls' team.

All these skiers individually and collectively turned in their best performances of the season today.  With sound preparation, an intense desire to perform to their potential, and focused, intelligent skiing, they came together as a team and did their absolute best today.  We are very proud of these kids!

Special thanks to coaches Greg Lotze and Kevin MacNabb for their terrific work in helping bring home this title, to Amy vanTassel who helped out today as another assistant coach, and to the many parents who came out to support us today.

More details forthcoming once we get the full individual and team results.

The varsity alpine ski teams had 3 runs of slalom today at Berkshire East, facing their usual opponents from the Mt. Institute Ski League (MISL).  Run #1 was a race itself, and runs 2-3 constituted the second race.  The JV squad had 3 runs of giant slalom.

The boys' JV team won both races today, and in so doing clinched the league championship title in the JV division for this season.  This was the team's 6th title since 1997.  The victories today were earned with strong performances by Ian Campbell, McLaren Gilmore, Marc Colomer, Evan Hefner, Gabe Susca-Lopata, and Nick Palmisano.

The girls' varsity team was 3rd in both races today, well behind Deerfield but narrowly edged out by second-place Mohawk.  Senior co-captain Brittany Sinclair paced her team with two top-6 finishes.  She has placed at this level in all 5 league races so far this year, an impressive accomplishment.  Eliza Davis contributed a strong 6th place finish in the first race.  Michaela Culver was also in the top-10, her best result this season.  In the second race, Christine Culver, senior co-captain Emily Krall, and Michaela backed up Brittany's result by taking the 17-19 places.  Emily had a particularly good day, with three solid runs and career-best results.

The boys' varsity team was also third in both races.  In the opening run, Deerfield took first place with 273 points, while Mohawk defeated NMH by a single point, 248-247.  Top finishers Alex Palma (2nd), Sam Waite (6th), Nick Carr (14th), Simon Cohn (17th) and Sam LaCroix (19th) all  were in the top-20, but it wasn't enough to beat top rivals DA and Mohawk.  In the second race, the team again placed 3rd.

Next up is a 4-team GS race at Eaglebrook this Saturday. The top-5 varsity boys and top-5 girls represent NMH next Wednesday at the Class B New England Prep School Alpine Championships at Mt Snow.

Having suffered two cancellations out of the 3 scheduled league races in January, we had a busy day on Wednesday with 3 runs of slalom comprising two different scored races in the Mt. Institute Ski League race series.  Here is a summary of NMH team scoring in the two races:

Race 1:
Boys Varsity: 3rd of 8 teams
Girls Varsity:  2nd of 5 teams
Boys JV: 2nd of 6 teams

Race 2 (technically race #3 since we had race #2 two weeks ago):
Boys Varsity: 3rd of 8 teams
Girls Varsity:  3rd of 5 teams
Boys JV: 1st of 6 teams

Girls Varsity:
Eliza Davis '0
8 and Brittany Sinclair '05 led their team to a strong finish in the first race of the day, finishing 5th and 6th respectively.  Michaela and Christine Culver '06 also had good results (11, 12), helping the girls capture second place behind a strong Deerfield squad.  In the second race, Davis and Sinclair were both in the top 5, but there wasn't as much team depth to follow, which allowed Mohawk to edge us out for second place.  Sophia Toraby '07 had a nice finish, placing 19th of the 31 girls.

Boys Varsity:
There were some good individual performances but the team couldn't put together its best 5 finishers in the same race, and fell to Mohawk and Deerfield.  Alex Palma '05 led his squad with a 5th place finish in race 2.  Sam LaCroix '06 had by far the best day of his career, coming out of nowhere (6th seed racer of 7 seeds) to place 4th in the first race and 6th in the second race.  Sam Waite '05 had a solid run to take 10th in race 1, and Simon Cohn '06 and Sam Wilson '05 broke into the top-20 consistently to help their team.

Boys JV:
The JV squad is accustomed to winning races, and the day started off a little roughly as three team members missed gates, disqualifying them.  McLaren Gilmore '07 had a great first run, placing 3rd.  Evan Hefner '06 also skiied well to capture 6th.  Ellis Berner '07 added another top-10 finish in race 1.  In the second race, the team atoned for earlier mishaps and came out firing as NMH grabbed the top 4 spots.  Berner, dissatisfied with his 9th place result in race 1, charged to victory.  He was followed up by Ian Campbell '06, Colin Newman '06, and Gilmore.  The Hoggers iced the victory with Marc Colomer's 9th place finish, giving the team a commanding 201-144 point victory over Bement and the other 4 teams.

Next week we repeat this format to make up for the other postponed race.  We will have 3 runs of slalom for the varsity racers, and 3 runs of GS for the JVs.  3:15 at Berkshire East.

Jan 19

The alpine ski team had its first team competition today, a mere 65 days after its first team practice back in early November.  Needless to say, the team was ready and geared up to compete!  The site was Berkshire East, for a giant slalom race.

The varsity girls started their season in great form as they placed 2nd of the 5 teams, behind Deerfield but 20 points ahead of Mohawk.  Freshman Eliza Davis opened her NMH racing career with a fantastic result, a team-leading 4th place, while veteran co-captain Brittany Sinclair was right behind her in 5th.  Juniors Michaela and Christine Culver contributed good results as they followed in 13th and 14th places.  Senior co-captain Emily Krall was the team’s 5th point earner in 26th.

The varsity boys also had a very good day.  PG Alex Palma got his team off to a great start with two solid runs to place 2nd of the 56 boys.  Two other newcomers to the team made significant contributions also:  Sam Waite was 6th and Nick Carr was 11th.  Senior co-captain Sam Wilson was the Hoggers’ fourth-best racer in 19th place, while Harv Schaefer (38th) capped off the scoring.  Tough competition from Deerfield and Mohawk bounced NMH into third place.  Unfortunately, team member Kurt Thibault suffered a hard fall at high speed, one which landed him in the hospital.

The JV team had a terrific first race, emerging victorious over the 5 teams in that division with 178 points to runner-up Bement (163).  Ian Campbell, new to the team this year, won the race, edging out his teammate Sam LaCroix by a mere 0.04 seconds.  Adding valuable depth were McLaren Gilmore and Colin Newman (7th and 8th).  Ellis Berner, Marc Colomer, and Gabriel Susca-Lopata provided the results necessary to bring home the victory for their team.
