2002 MISL CHAMPIONS
NMH Boys Varsity & JV Teams
2002 Season Weekly Reports
Feb. 20 In the final league race of the season, the NMH boys' JV team stumbled for the first time all season and saw their undefeated season slip away as Eaglebrook won today's slalom. While the Eaglebrook boys skiied well, we did pull our #1 JV racer up to varsity, and that alone would have probably made the difference in the results today.

In the boys' varsity division also, Eaglebrook defeated NMH as several Hoggers fell in the single run event. But, NMH had already secured league championship titles in these two divisions based on their dominance in the previous five races, and the boys were awarded these titles in the annual ceremony which followed the race.

The girls' varsity team finished fifth today, and fifth in the final league standings. It was the final race for four-year senior captain Alexis Voutas.

Individual Accomplishments:

1. Misha Sidorsky finished the season as the #2 ranked racer in the boys' varsity division (out of 62 racers). Misha placed in the top-3 in all 6 races.

2. Ryan Koppes finished #3 in the individual rankings. This is the first time in recent history that NMH has taken 2 of the top 3 spots.

3. Dan Gilbert was #2 in the JV standings (tied for first place in overall points, but lost in the tiebreaker criterion).

4. Tyler Nielsen was #3 in the JV standings.

5. Jon Tillson won today's JV race, a personal best. He was followed by Tyler (just 0.01 behind) and Dan (a four-year senior captain, racing in his final race) as NMH swept the top 3 spots.

6. Susie Slater (6th) and Kate Kaufmann (16th) matched their season-best results today.

We say goodbye to the following multi-year seniors: Alexis Voutas, Dan Gilbert, Dave Rosenzweig, Drew Myers, and Dave Klingener.

The boys' and girls' alpine teams had a great season, due to their strong work ethic and commitment to each other. Individually and collectively these racers performed consistently, and superior team depth was particularly critical to the boys' championships. They are a terrific group of students who were fun to work with, who set high standards for themselves, and who worked hard to achieve the success they realized. We had a group of kids with exceptionally positive attitudes, who cared for their teammates and always put the TEAM first. It's been one of the most rewarding seasons I have had in fifteen years of coaching.

Team Season Records:

NMH Boys’ Varsity: 45-2
NMH Girls’ Varsity: 24-24
NMH Boys JV: 35-1

(On another personal note, today marked the second time this year that an undefeated team I coached lost in the final contest of the season. Once again, dreams of dinner at Ford Cottage vanished at the last possible moment...)

I'd like to give special recognition to Greg Lotze and Linda Sidorsky who generously volunteered many hours of their time to help drive the team this season. We also had help from Dick Peller, Brooks Donnelly, and Elaine Parshall.

Feb. 13 The alpine ski team competed at the Division 1 New England Championships today. It's always a long, grueling, exhausting day as the kids take two runs of slalom and two runs of GS (essentially 2 full races packed into one day).

The boys' team entered the race with high hopes as the top team from our league, but fell short of our expectations with a sub-par performance. Things looked good after the first run of the slalom, but quickly deteriorated as a couple of our racers fell (we race 5 and count the best 3 combined run times). We fared a little better in the afternoon GS. We finished 9th overall out of the 12 schools. Misha Sidorsky was our top finisher in both events, and Francesco "la Bomba" Rossi's 32nd in the GS was an especially good result.

The girls' team had a solid day and performed well given their relative lack of experience. They were 12th overall, with particularly good performances from Abby Eldridge and Alexis Voutas. After four years on the team, Alexis has really come on strong lately, and is finishing her career with her finest races ever.

The students who represented NMH well today and battled through a long, cold day in giving their best effort:

Boys

  • Misha Sidorsky
  • Ryan Koppes
  • Tim Scialabba
  • Dave Rosenzweig
  • Drew Myers
  • Francesco Rossi

Girls

  • Susie Slater
  • Abby Eldridge
  • Alexis Voutas
  • Kate Kaufmann
  • Tara Elliot
  • Christina Sutton

Feb. 6 In a thoroughly dominating, outstanding team performance, the NMH boys' varsity alpine ski team clinched the 2002 Mount Institute Ski League Championship title by winning their 4th race of the season today. #1 NMH defeated #2 Mohawk, 280-256, in today’s race, giving the Hoggers an insurmountable lead over Mohawk and the other 8 teams in the MISL league standings (with one race remaining). The NMH boys have won four of the five races thus far. This is the first time since 1993 that NMH has captured the league championship, and the first time NMH has won it outright (in '93 NMH & Deerfield were co-champs).

As has been the case all season, it was a total team performance that secured the victory as NMH placed all 7 racers in the top 16, an incredible accomplishment. Depth and consistency (and a lot of hard work) have been the keys to the team's success this season.

Top performers were once again Misha Sidorsky '04 (Shelburne Falls, MA) in 3rd place, and Ryan Koppes '03 (Landenberg, PA) in 5th. Other finishers:
9. Francesco "Italian Stallion" Rossi '03 (Milan, Italy)
10. Tim Scialabba '03 (Queensbury, NY)
13. Dave Rosenzweig '02 (Williamsburg, MA)
14. Andy Allen '05 (Belchertown, MA)
16. Drew Myers '02 (Atherton, CA)

The girls’ varsity team skied very well today, with all 7 racers finishing both runs cleanly. NMH finished 6th, but was only 3 points out of third place and 5 points out of second place (214-217,219). Susie Slater '03 was 11th, Abby Eldridge '03 was 18th, and team captain Alexis Voutas '02 was 19th. Others:
26. Kate Kaufmann '04
32. Tara Elliot '05
37. Liz Kaminoh '03
40. Chrissie Sutton '03

The boys' JV team crushed the competition once again, and in so doing also mathematically clinched the MISL League Championship title in their division. Still undefeated, the JV boys owned the mountain today, capturing 5 of the top 8 positions in their most impressive performance to date. Four-year senior and team captain Dan Gilbert (second today) was just .01 seconds out of first place. Tyler Nielsen '04, Ben Bray '03, and Jon Tillson '03 completed a sweep of 3-4-5. David Klingener '02 was 8th, and Robbie Smith '05 was 13th.

Team Records:
NMH Boys’ Varsity: 38-1
NMH Girls’ Varsity: 20-20
NMH Boys JV: 30-0

Jan. 30 Despite the recent warm weather and rain last night, we were able to compete in our fourth league race today, a slalom competition at Berkshire East.

The boys' varsity team won their third race of the season as they very narrowly defeated rival Mohawk, 274-273, in a critical showdown of the league's top 2 teams. The margin of victory over the other 6 teams was more substantial. Once again it was NMH's team depth that secured the victory as the Hoggers put all five scorers in the top-15. The win puts the boys' varsity team one step closer to capturing the Mount Institute Ski League Championship title. #1 NMH now leads #2 Mohawk, 35-32, with 2 races remaining. Today's 1-point win may well prove to be a pivotal point in our season, as a Mohawk victory today would have put the Warriors right back in the title race. NMH continues to have the inside track to the title.

Top performers were once again Misha Sidorsky '04 with yet another 2nd place finish, and Ryan Koppes '03 in 5th. It was an outstanding team effort as all 7 racers finished both runs cleanly; the team definitely performed to its full potential today. Other finishers:
10. Tim Scialabba '03
14. Dave Rosenzweig '02
15. Drew Myers '02
21. Francesco Rossi '03
23. Andy Allen '05

The girls' varsity skiers also had an excellent team performance, capturing 3rd place of the 9 teams. Again, all 7 racers completed both slalom runs essentially flawlessly, an impressive accomplishment, particularly in slalom. This young team continues to improve and perform at higher levels, and today they beat the Mohawk girls, who are perenially one of the top public school teams in Massachusetts. Susie Slater '03 was 7th, and the big story of the day was Abby Eldridge '03, who had a career-best 9th place finish. Kate Kaufmann '04 also had her best result ever (16th), and four-year senior captain Alexis Voutas continued her amazing run of successful races by placing 17th. Alexis has finished 20 of the 23 races in her NMH career, an incredible accomplishment. Other finishers:
27. Chrissy Sutton '03
28. Tara Elliot '05
34. Andrea Sepenzis '05

The boys' JV team posted its 4th straight first-place finish and ran its record to 24-0. NMH dominated the competition today, sweeping the top 3 spots as Ben Bray '03, four-year senior captain Dan Gilbert, and Tyler Nielsen '04 led the Hogger crusade. The team is well on its way to securing another championship title in the JV division. If this happens, it will be the team's 4th championship in the past six years.  Other finishers:
7. David Klingener '02
21. Mike Dunn '03
22. Ian MacDonald '04

Team Records:
BV: 30-1
GV: 17-15
JV: 24-0

Jan. 23 The alpine ski team raced a giant slalom competition today in week 3 of the 6-week MISL (Mt. Institute Ski League) race series.

The boys' varsity team notched another victory today, edging out rival Mohawk in a tight race, 278-268. Things were not looking good for the Hoggers as #4 seed racer Tim Scialabba fell in the first run, #3 Dave Rosenzweig had trouble negotiating the bottom of the course in his first run, and #7 Ben Bray lost a ski in the second run. With very tough competition from powerhouse Mohawk (always one of the top public school ski teams in MA), we feared we would drop the contest today. But, a combination of help from Mohawk (their #2 racer fell), and very solid skiing from the rest of the NMH troops, secured the victory. We continue to rely on top racers Misha Sidorsky '04 (3rd today) and Ryan Koppes '03 (4th). Coming through in the clutch were Drew Myers '02, Rosenzweig, and Andy Allen '05, as we again placed all five team point scorers in the top-15.

With this important win, NMH maintained its status as the #1 ranked team in the league, and stretched its lead over #2 Mohawk (26-24 points after 3 races).

In the girls' varsity race, NMH had a tough day on the slopes, finishing 8th as the team managed to get only 4 racers across the finish line. Abby Eldridge '03 led the Hoggers with her 16th place finish, and team captain and four-year veteran Alexis Voutas '02 was close behind in 19th. Newcomers Tara Elliot '05 and Chrissy Sutton '03 helped the NMH cause by placing 29th and 31st respectively.

The juggernaut that is the NMH JV ski team continued its dominance in its division and extended its undefeated streak today, beating Mohawk 228-207 (as well as defeating the other 5 teams). Strong skiing by Francesco Rossi '03, who won the race, Tyler Nielsen '04 (4th), David Klingener '02 (9th), and Vince Harrington '03 (12th) helped secure the victory. Other finishers were Robby Smith '05 (22), Erlan Burkitbayev '03 (31st in his first race ever), and Kevin Lalli '04 (43rd).

Team Records:

BV: 23-1
GV: 11-13
JV: 18-0

Jan. 16 The alpine ski team had another good day on the (finally) hard-packed slopes at Berkshire East today. The varsity race was a slalom, and the JV race was a giant slalom.
The girls' varsity team turned in a great team performance, finishing a most impressive 2nd place of the 9 teams. Paced by Susie Slater '03 in 6th place, the girls shrugged off inexperience (for 4 of 7 girls this was their first slalom race) and put 6 team members across the finish line, a dazzling performance for the young team. Team captain and four-year veteran Alexis Voutas '02 had a career-best result, finishing 15th of the 56 girls. She was followed by:

19. Abby Eldridge '03
25. Kate Kaufmann '04
31. Chrissy Sutton '03
34.
Andrea Sepenzis '05

The boys' varsity team was also 2nd today, which, while impressive, fell short of their high expectations set by winning last week's opening race. Misha Sidorsky '04 notched another second place finish, followed by solid results from Ryan Koppes '03 (6th) and Tim Scialabba '03 (9th). Two of NMH's skiers were disqualified for missing gates, which diminished the team's competitiveness, but freshman Andy Allen stepped up, coming in 20th, and 4-year veteran Dave Rosenzweig '02 provided the final team points with his 24th place finish. In short, we were happy to beat 7 other teams (including a narrow 2-point margin over Eaglebrook), but disappointed to fall to Mohawk by 22 points. If we ski our best, we can compete with any team in the league. Judging from the results of the first two races, it may well be a shootout between Mohawk and NMH this season.

The boys' JV squad absolutely crushed the competition today, remaining undefeated with a stunning 64 point victory over Mohawk and the other 5 teams. Loaded with experience, the team grabbed 4 of the top 9 spots. Individual finishers:

5. Tyler Nielsen '04
6. Dan Gilbert '02 (team captain)
7. David Klingener '02
9. Ben Bray '03
14. Robbie Smith '05
20. Ian MacDonald '04
23.
Mike Dunn '03

NMH Team records after 2 races:
G Varsity: 10-6
B Varsity: 15-1
B JV: 12-0

Jan. 9 The alpine ski team kicked off its season with terrific results in today's first race, a giant slalom at Berkshire East. The boys' varsity team emerged with a victory over all of the other 8 teams, while the girls' varsity was 6th of 9 teams, and the boys' JV squad also captured first place.

Boys Varsity:
In a remarkable performance, NMH put 6 of its 7 racers in the top-14 in a field of 57 racers, dominating the competition with a team that is the deepest and perhaps most talented in recent history. Returning veteran Misha Sidorsky '04 nabbed 2nd place, followed by new addition Ryan Koppes '03 in 3rd. Four-year veteran Dave Rosenzweig '02 was 8th, Drew Myers '03 was 11th, while newcomers Andy Allen '05 and Tim Scialabba '03 were 13th and 14th. NMH finished with 283 points, 19 points ahead of second-place Eaglebrook.

Girls Varsity:
This year's girls' team features just 3 skiers with significant racing experience, matched against some tough competition. For most of the team, today was their first race ever, and they fared admirably. Veteran Susie Slater '03 led the troops with a 7th place finish, and Abby Eldridge '03, returning to the team after a year's absence, had a most-impressive 16th. Kate Kaufmann '04 and Christina Sutton '03 had very good first-ever performances, placing 38th and 39th.

Boys JV:
The NMH boys' JV team has been the most dominant team in its division within the MISL (Mt Institute Ski League) over the past several years. They kicked off this season with a characteristic victory, crushing the competition by grabbing 5 of the top 10 places. Ben Bray '03 won the race, followed by team captain Dan Gilbert '02 (3rd), Jon Tillson '03 (5th), Tyler Nielsen '04 (9th), and David Klingener '02 (10th). The depth we have on the boys' team this year is pretty impressive, as most of today's JV squad would be quite competitive in the varsity division.

The team is excited about today's great start to the season, and we're eager to prove ourselves again next Wednesday as the series continues at Berkshire East with slalom and GS races for varsity & JV, respectively. Races begin at 3:15 every Wednesday.
