2001 Season Weekly Reports
Feb. 21, 2001 The alpine ski team concluded its season today with a slalom race at Eaglebrook. The coed JV team finished the season in 2nd place in the league, while the varsity girls and the varsity boys were 4th.

Highlights from today's action:

1. Four-year senior Jeff Stewart concluded his career with his best performance ever (BY FAR!). Jeff nabbed a 6th place finish for the varsity boys, who finished 3rd today. It was a storybook ending for the young Gloucesterman. Jeff helped NMH jump ahead of a strong Eaglebrook team in the final league standings at the last moment (after trailing all season).

2. Alexis Voutas '02 also had a career-best result today, finishing first for her team in 17th place.

3. Susie Slater '03, who fell today for just the first time in league contests this season, earned the #3 ranking in the varsity girls' individual standings (out of 59 racers).

4. Misha Sidorsky '04 continued to demonstrate great slalom skiing, placing 3rd. After a slow start this year, Misha finished in the top-3 in each of the final 3 MISL races. Misha will compete in the Tri State J3 Championships this weekend in hopes of qualifying for the Eastern Junior Olympics.

Feb. 14, 2001 The alpine ski team traveled to Sunday River, Maine for the New England Prep School Division 1 Alpine Skiing Championships.

Representing NMH were the following 5 boys and girls:
Chris Hiam, Misha Sidorsky, Dave Rosenzweig, Jeff Stewart, and Nicolai Herbst
Susie Slater, Cammie Heiser, Korinna Fritzemeyer, Alexis Voutas, and Katie Gallagher

We found the competition to be very strong, as usual, and while the team skied pretty well, we had to settle for 10th place for both boys and girls (out of 12 boys teams, and 11 girls teams). The northern New England ski academies -- Gould, Holderness, White Mountain School -- dominated the event, and as is usually the case, the "true prep schools" battled it out for the 4th-12th positions. The NMH boys' team finished ahead of Deerfield, which was a significant accomplishment since DA has been ahead of us in league competition this year.

The team returns to league action next Wednesday in the final MISL slalom race, to be held at Eaglebrook beginning at 3:15. It should be an exciting race as there is presently a 3-way tie for first place in the boys' varsity division, and a tight contest for the girls' title as well. The NMH girls will be battling Taft for the #3 spot, while the boys will try to jump ahead of Eaglebrook to finish 4th. Two NMH racers, Susie Slater and Dave Rosenzweig, are in position to challenge for the individual champion title based on their overall results this season. The NMH JV team is in 2nd place, 1 point behind Bement. Come check out the action in our last race of the season!

Feb. 7, 2001 The conditions today were not ideal for racing, as the two feet of snow that Berkshire East received made the course soft and rutty, with a lot of loose snow and highly variable conditions. (However, we won't complain a bit about the best storm to hit New England in recent memory!)
On the heels of last week's victory, Misha Sidorsky '04 led the Hogger lads with another great performance, coming in 2nd place in today's giant slalom. The boys couldn't put more than 2 guys in the top-30, though, and finished 5th as a team.
Susie Slater '03 continued her amazing consistency, placing 5th. She has finished in the top-5 in every race this season and is the league's #2 ranked racer. Cammie Heiser '02 and Alexis Voutas '02 were the only other girls to finish in the top-20. The team was 4th today.
A depleted JV squad was forced to settle for 3rd place today, taking them out of the running for the JV title. We were only able to field 4 racers instead of the usual 7 (top 5 count in team scoring). Vince Harrington was pulled up to the varsity today, and he had a good day, finishing both runs when we needed him as our fifth scorer.
The top 5 boys and girls travel to Sunday River, Maine, next week to compete in the New England Prep School Alpine Championships. We leave on Tuesday and race all day Wednesday.
Jan. 31, 2001 The alpine ski team had a great day on the mountain in today's slalom races. Misha Sidorsky '04 became the first NMH skier in over five years to WIN a league race, and he did so convincingly with a 2.62 second margin. He led the boys' varsity team to a season-best 2nd place finish. Also scoring team points were Dave Rosenzweig '02 (7th -- a career best), Jeff Stewart '01 (15th), Nico Herbst '01 (24th), and Tyler Nielsen '04 (28th). The team might well have won today if injury hadn't prevented Chris Hiam '01 from competing.

The girls' varsity team also had its best outing of the season, placing 3rd. Susie Slater '03 continued her impressive consistency, placing 2nd. She's on track to win next week, having had finishes of 5th, 4th, 3rd, and now 2nd. Helping the team grab the bronze medal today were Cammie Heiser '02 (17th), Korinna Fritzemeyer '02 (20th), Alexis Voutas '02 (22nd) and Katie Gallagher '02 (24th).

The JV team won again today, behind the efforts of Jesse Levin '03 and David Klingener '02 (3rd and 6th), and a trio of Hoggers securing the 9th-10th-11th place positions: Vince Harrington '03, Blake Golber '04, and Chris Young '04.

Jan. 24, 2001 Today's race began with a very touching, emotional tribute to one of our league's most remarkable young racers. Late last week, Amy Spencer, a local student at Stoneleigh Burnham and previously Eaglebrook & Bement, died unexpectedly. She was an avid, competitive ski racer and an incredibly caring, compassionate person who made a great impact on the lives of those who knew her. Just before today's race, the entire league -- all the racers and coaches from all the schools -- gathered at the top of the course as Jack Shea from Eaglebrook said a few words about Amy and led a moment of silence. It was great to see all the students from competing schools come together and share this moment as a united group.

Perhaps inspired by Amy's memory, the GIRLS' VARSITY TEAM was the big story of the day today as they placed third of the 8 teams, their best result since the 1998 season. They were just 5 points out of second place. Williston was first with 250, and Taft second with 217.

Susie Slater '03 led the Hoggers once again with a career-best 3rd place finish. She has been in the top-5 every week so far. Cammie Heiser '02 was 11th, followed by Alexis Voutas '02, who had by far her best result of the season, placing 18th. Juniors Korinna Fritzemeyer and Katie Gallagher filled out the team scoring in 20th and 21st, respectively.

The BOYS' VARSITY TEAM had a rough day, placing 5th of 9 teams. Top racer Chris Hiam '01 had a great first run (2nd place) and was blasting his way towards a potential winning run when a ski popped off and he crashed. With Misha Sidorsky sidelined to sickness, and two others succumbing to falls, the team wasn't in a position to be competitive today. Highlights were Dave Rosenzweig's 10th-place finish, and Nico Herbst's career-best 15th place result.

The JV TEAM had a good day, finishing 2nd despite losing the services of #1 seed Tyler Nielsen, who we pulled up to fill a void in the varsity team. The JV Hoggers have proven that when they have their full squad, they are the top team in the league. With one victory and two second-place finishes to Bement, the race for the JV Division Title will be tight. Jesse Levin and Vince Harrington led the team with 5th & 6th place finishes today.

Jan 17, 2001 Darkness and lighting failure spoiled an otherwise great afternoon of racing at Berkshire East today. We couldn't do much about the earth's rotation to stop the growing darkness, and the Berkshire East maintenance personnel couldn't do much about their lighting failure until it was too late, so today's varsity race was nixed after the first run. Results were computed based on the single run. Unfortunately this was not to our advantage as we were having good second run results (the two times are added together) while some of our competitors were struggling.

Nonetheless, the JV team did finish both of their runs, and the NMH squad won the race. Jesse Levin led the troops to victory with his third-place finish.

The varsity girls were 4th today, paced by Susie Slater's 4th-place run.

The varsity boys were a disappointing 5th, although Chris Hiam and Dave Rosenzweig had good days, placing 5th and 8th respectively.

We had a very good yield in that all 14 varsity racers finished their run, but the speed just wasn't there today.

Jan. 10, 2001 Two months after the winter sports season began, the alpine ski team had its first contest. The varsity girls finished 5th of 8 teams, the varsity boys were 4th of 9 teams, and the JV squad was 2nd of 4 teams.
VARSITY GIRLS:

Newcomer Susie Slater '03 paced the Hoggers with an impressive 4th place finish, the best finish by an NMH girl since 1998 when Laura Ruedig nabbed a second. Cammie Heiser '02 followed in 9th place, but unfortunately the team's 3rd and 4th seed racers fell. The girls' division is quite competitive this season, with Williston, Deerfield, and Taft fielding teams deep with talent.

VARSITY BOYS:
The boys had a rough first day, losing the two top-seed racers to mishaps on the course. Freshman Misha Sidorsky was 5th after the first run but got a little tangled up in a gate during his second descent. Chris Hiam '01, rebounding from knee surgery, was skiing pretty well but lost a ski due to an unlucky binding pre-release. However, the later seeds did a respectable job of filling in as Dave Rosenzweig '02, Jeff Stewart '01, and Nico Herbst '01 gave us three finishers in the top-20. Dave's 13th and Jeff's 14th were by far career-best results.

JV BOYS:
Freshman Tyler Nielsen led the troops with a fine 2nd place performance. Vince Harrington '03 followed in 8th place. The rest of the team finished in the top-15 in a division historically dominated by NMH.
