NMH and Deerfield put on a fantastic race today, with many coaches and spectators commenting to us how it was the best, most well-run and organized championship event in many years (some even said "ever"). We were lucky with good weather and great snow conditions on the hill. But, the biggest factor in the success of today's race was the tremendous effort put forth by the NMH and Deerfield students and adult volunteers, and also the Berkshire East race staff. I'd like to thank the entire NMH team, all of whom were up well before dawn today and worked tirelessly to make sure the visiting teams had a great experience. Thanks also to our adult volunteers (Craig Hefner, Jim Block, Don Murphy, Linda Sidorsky, Pam Eldridge, Emily Yandoh, Kate Roloff '99 and Danielle Faul '99), without whose help we couldn't have held this race. Because of the great work by all these folks, we were able to execute nearly 500 race runs (125 racers X 4 runs each) between 9:30 and 2:00, finishing the race three and a half hours earlier than it concluded last year!

Results:
The NMH boys finshed 8th out of the 13 teams. We frankly didn't expect to compete with the pseudo ski academies Gould, Holderness, and New Hampton School (who were 1-2-3 in both boys and girls). Against our peers, we finished in the middle of the pack: behind KUA, White Mountain, Proctor, and Kents Hill, but ahead of Berkshire, Deerfield, Taft, St. Pauls, and Vermont Academy. Our top finishers in slalom were Chris Hiam (16), Maciej Lorentz (21), and Drew Myers (37). In GS, it was Lorentz (31), Hiam (33), and Ryan Cynoski (38). Dave Rosenzweig and Aaron Simmons followed.
Our young girls team finished last of the 12 teams, but they certainly had plenty of spirit! Our team consisted of Cammie Heiser, Tamara Coqui, Alexis Voutas, Ani Mueller-Witt, and Abby Eldridge.

Wed, Feb 9 CHRIS HIAM '01 was named this week's NMH Athlete of theWeek!  His 3rd place finish last week helped his team vault back into first place in the league.

In our final league race, the NMH boys' varsity team finished third today, as Mohawk won the race and the league title with a dominating performance that demonstrated why they are the two-time defending Massachusetts high school champions. NMH finished the season ranked #2 in the league of 8 teams, our highest ranking in several years.
Senior Maciej Lorentz paced the Hoggers with a career-best 4th place. Four-year veteran & captain Ryan Cynoski '00 demonstrated his usual consistency with an 11th place finish, followed immediately by Aaron Simmons '00. For the second week in a row, Dave Rosenzweig '02 turned in a better two-run combined time than his brother, Ben, who skis for Williston, which was essential to our narrow victory over the Williston lads. Drew Myers '02, another highly consistent racer for us this year, was the final team point scorer, in 22nd.
The boys' JV team won their second consecutive league title today (their 3rd title in the past 4 years) with a convincing 36-point win. Nobody seriously challenged this squad this season as they won four of the five races. In today's GS, NMH scorers were: Nico Herbst (2), Jeff Stewart (5), Dan Gilbert (10), Matt Hennessy (15), and Andy Birnbryer (22). Future Hogger Misha Sidorsky '04 (racing as an Independent) won his fourth race of the season and won the individual title in the JV division. We'll be happy to have him with us next year...
The girls' team, a rapidly improving corps of young racers, secured their usual 5th place finish today with scorers Cammie Heiser (15), Abby Eldridge (23), Tamara Coqui (27), Ani Mueller-Witt (28), and Katie Gallagher (35).
The top five racers from the boys' team and girls' team will represent NMH at next Wednesday's New England Prep School Alpine Skiing Championships, hosted by NMH & Deerfield at Berkshire East. Please consider coming out to cheer on the Hoggers at this all-day multi-race event. Races begin at 9:30 am and continue until about 3:00pm.

Wed, Feb 2 The boys' varsity team closed the gap on Mohawk in the league standings with a 2nd place showing in today's GS. With one race to go, NMH now shares the #1 ranking in the league with Mohawk. Deerfield earned a narrow victory today over NMH, Williston, and Mohawk. These four teams have each won in the past four weeks -- it's a very tight race for the championship! Today's scores:
1 DA-A 234
2 NMH 228
3 WNS 227
4 MHK 219
NMH finishers today were:
3. Chris Hiam (back from injury -- it's nice to have him back!)
8. Ryan Cynoski (tied his career-best finish)
12. Maciej Lorentz
14. Aaron Simmons
20. Drew Myers
22. Dave Rosenzweig (beat his brother, Ben, who skis for Williston, by 1.1 seconds in their first head-to-head matchup.

The girls' varsity team finished fifth. Cammie Heiser and Alexis Voutas led the team with career-best performances (9th, 17th respectively). Following them were Tamara Coqui, Abby Eldridge, and Adriane Mueller-Witt.

The boys' JV team got back on track (after last week's defeat) with a dominating performance, winning by 20 points. With one race to go, they have virtually clinched the league title. Pacing the Hoggers today was Jeff Stewart (4th). Helping their team to victory were Nico Herbst (5th), Ben Shenefelt (12th), Matt Hennessy (15th), and Dan Gilbert (18th).

Next week's race will decide who walks away with the league championship. The current standings in the boys' varsity division:
1 MHK 27
2 NMH 27
3 WNS 25
4 DA-A 25
5 DA-B 13
6 EBS 13
7 CUSH 9
8 FRHS 5

Wed, Jan 26 Another late night for the NMH alpine team... We can't seem to get through a week without some form of excitement. Tonight it was the tanker crash on I-91 that delayed our return to campus by several hours. But, before that...
The boys' varsity ski team captured third place in today's slalom. The girls were 5th, while the JV team was 3rd, snapping a two-year unbeaten streak of 7 races. The boys' varsity squad missed leader Chris Hiam, out indefinitely after last week's crash, as they were narrowly defeated by Mohawk and Deerfield. A mere 7 points decided the race (217 for NMH, 224 for Mohawk). With two races to go, the competition is very tight for the boys' title.
Boys finishers: Maciej Lorentz, 8th. Ryan Cynoski, 9th. Aaron Simmons, 11th. Drew Myers, 17th. Hunter Smith, 23rd.
The girls team showed improving slalom skills. NMH finishers were Cammie Heiser (13th), Tamara Coqui (17th), Abby Eldridge (20th), Arnie Mueller-Witt (21st), Alexis Voutas (25th), Julia Haarstrick (29th), and Katie Gallagher (46th).
The JV team saw its ranks a bit depleted from injury and illness, and gave up ground on its lead in the league rankings with today's third place finish. Andy Birnbryer again led his team (5th), followed by a career-best 7th place finish by Dan Gilbert. Ben Shenefelt, Tim Rinaldi, and Matt Hennessy rounded out the team scoring in that event.
Wed, Jan 19 It was an exciting and frightful day on the slopes. Junior Chris Hiam, the team's #1 seed racer, had skiied flawlessly in his first run, and was blasting down the course on his second run when he fell very hard on his head/neck/back, sustaining a serious injury. He was attended to by a small army of medical personnel, and airlifted by Life Flight to Baystate Medical Center. Fortunately, he is okay (though very sore), and he was released tonight.
Although none of us was thinking much about the race after the accident, we were later treated to the good news that Chris helped his team (boys' varsity) WIN today! The team put all 5 scoring racers in the top-15 in the abbreviated race (one run instead of two due to the accident). Maciej Lorentz, Aaron Simmons, and Chris took places 7-8-9, while Ryan Cynoski and Drew Myers were 14th and 15th. The team edged defending Mass. state champion Mohawk High School by 8 points in an outstanding team performance. Depth was the key to victory.
The boys' JV team also won, remaining undefeated this season. Jeff Stewart led the pack in 2nd place (future Hogger Misha Sidorsky won for the second week in a row). Also scoring team points were Andrew Birnbryer (7th), Hunter Smith (14th), Matt Hennessy (16th) and Ben Shenefelt (17th).
The girls' varsity team moved up a notch from last week, earning 4th. Cammie Heiser was the team's top finisher in 12th, followed by Tamara Coqui (20th), Abby Eldridge (24th), Arnie Mueller-Witt (25th), Alexis Voutas (28th), Bitsy Perlman (30th), and Christina Bauer (36th).
Wed, Jan 12 58 days after the winter sports season officially began, the alpine ski team finally had its first contest! Each week we race the same teams, always at Berkshire East. The season kicked off with a GS (Giant Slalom) race today.
The boys' varsity team nabbed 3rd place (of 8 teams), an impressive accomplishment, particularly since we had only one very limited afternoon of training on snow. The girls' team was 5th (of 9 teams), while the JV team won, edging out (quite literally) the other 7 teams.
Boys Varsity:
Junior Chris Hiam was NMH's top finisher with an impressive 5th place finish, helping his team squeeze past rival Deerfield, a perennial powerhouse in the league. Senior captain (and 4-year varsity veteran) Ryan Cynoski finished in 8th, while newcomers Drew Myers and Nicolai Herbst were 19th and 23rd respectively. It will be interesting to see how we do with more training, and if we can get all top racers to finish (two of our veterans went off the course).
Girls Varsity:
This year's girls' team is young, featuring only three returning skiers -- all sophomores -- and six new skiers, all new to racing. Captain Cammie Heiser '02 led her team with a 15th place finish today. Arnie Mueller-Witt (one of our German fab-four) was 23rd (quite impressive for her first race!), while Alexis Voutas was 27th. Bitsy Perlman was 32nd, while Tamara Coqui was 35th.
JV:
The JV team began its defense of its 1999 league championship title with a victory today, led by veteran Matt Hennessy"'ya at the bottom" who finished 7th. The Hoggers put all five team scorers in the top 20, with strong performances by Andrew "burn it up" Birnbryer, Dan "the man" Gilbert, Hunter "go for the gold" Smith, Rob "southern flight" Shaw, and Ben "shin to win" Shenefelt.
