May 5, 2008
The boys' varsity lacrosse team recently named junior defender Mohan Fitzgerald (Toronto, ON) captain by vote of the team. Fitzgerald will join graduating players Wilson Zinnurov (Brookline, MA), Mick MacLaverty (Kenilworth, IL), and Alex Junda (Swampscott, MA) as quad-captain for the remainder of the 2008 season, and then he will assume the lone captaincy of the team in the off-season and through the 2009 season next spring. A second-year player for NMH, Fitzgerald emerged this season to assume a starting role in the NMH defense that is limiting opponents to under 9 goals per game. Equally capable of playing close defense and long stick midfield, he has shown great leadership through his hard work and dedication. Congratulations to him for this recognition.
BV Lacrosse: RPT All-Tournament Team Selections
March 13, 2008
Three members of the NMH boys' varsity lacrosse team were honored on Friday night for their outstanding play during the team's annual spring trip to the Royal Palms Lacrosse Tournament by being named to the All-Tournament team. Senior defenseman and co-captain Wilson Zinnurov (Brookline, MA), senior midfielder Colin Downey (East Falmouth, MA), and postgraduate attackman Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA) all earned inclusion on the team made up of eleven players from NMH, Pingry School (NJ), DeMatha School (DC), and Groton School (MA). For his part, Zinnurov, a four-year player and two-time captain for NMH, anchored a stingy NMH defense that gave up very few goals in their scrimmages this week. McNamara proved to be the leading scorer for NMH on the week, showing an uncanny ability to find the back of the net. Downey impressed opposing coaches with his versatility and intensity throughout the week. Congratulations to these players -- and to all of the selections -- for this honor!
BV Lacrosse Captains Announced
March 13, 2008
The 2008 Northfield Mount Hermon boys' lacrosse team captains were recently announced. Joining four-year senior defenseman and returning captain Wilson Zinnurov (Brookline, MA) as co-captain is postgraduate midfielder Mick MacLaverty (Kenilworth, IL). Zinnurov, a 6'2' 200-pound long-stick returns for his fourth year with the NMH varsity team looking to anchor a solid defensive corps. Zinnurov earned the 2006 Most Improved Player award and was honored with an All-League selection last season in 2007. He will attend Salisbury University next year. For his part, MacLaverty, a first-year player, has already made his presence felt in his capacity as a rangy midfielder with great speed, vision, and creativity, not to mention an impressive finishing prowess. Together, the duo will lead the 2008 NMH squad through its demanding 19-game schedule. After returning from a host of scrimmages in Florida during spring break, their team will open its season on Wednesday, March 26 with a neutral site game against league-rival Brunswick School on the turf at Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford, CT.
Zinnurov Named Captain
May 11, 2007
The NMH boys' varsity coaching staff recently announced that junior defenseman Wilson Zinnurov (Brookline, MA) will serve as tri-captain of the team for the remainder of the 2007 season and for the entire 2008 season. Zinnurov was elected by vote of his peers. Wilson is a three-year varsity starter at close defense. He began his career starting every game in the 2005 season, anchoring a defense that allowed just 10.8 goals against per game. Last year, in 2006, Zinnurov emerged as the team's top defender, matching up with opponents' top attackman. He finished second on the team for groundballs with 68 and had 4 or more groundballs in 10 contests, playing in all 19 contests. Also, impressively, Zinnurov took only three penalties for 3 minutes. For his efforts, Zinnurov was named the 2006 Most Improved Player. This season, Zinnurov has continued to thrive, aiding NMH's defense, which has limited opponents to 8.31 goals against per game. The 6'2", 195-pound Zinnurov has also been selected to be a Student Leader beginning next fall. Over the summers, he plays club lacrosse for Team Central under Coach John Middleton. Zinnurov is the son of Kathy Utter and Renat Zinnurov. He will look to continue to play lacrosse in college.
McNamara Shows Prowess
March 31, 2007
Sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, MA) has kicked off his lacrosse career at NMH with a bang. He began the season scoring a goal in his first-ever game in Cardinal against St. Andrew's (FL) despite battling a nagging injury. Then, his individual efforts bolstered NMH with an electric performance against Brunswick, a game in which he tallied only an assist but in which he showed great prowess and energy in challenging the opposing defense each time he touched the ball. Finally, in the team's home-opening 20-3 win over Canterbury on Saturday, he erupted for three goals, playing both midfield and attack in the game, continuing to impress with his energy. Looking ahead, NMH lacrosse can continue to expect great things from Connor and the rest of the team as they move into the heart of their schedule beginning with Choate on Wednesday and Avon Old Farms on Saturday.
BV Lax Wins Royal Palms Tournament
MaRCH 18, 2007
After falling at the hands of St. Andrew's of Florida the night before, the boys from NMH rebounded in impressive form on Saturday morning with a dominating performance over St. Andrew's of Delaware. All NMH players entered the game, and there were 9 different scorers in the contest. Defensively, Ben Hansell (Montclair, NJ) and Jon Weisburst (West Hartford, CT) split time in net but saw little action thanks to the play of the defense in front of them. Co-captains Tim Bigelow (East Walpole, MA) and Erik Elmquist (Rolling Bay, WA) controlled the tempo of the game for NMH.
Following the scrimmage, NMH was presented with a trophy for having been named the 2007 Royal Palms Lacrosse Tournament Team Champion. While no official statistics or scores were kept in any of the scrimmages against St. Christopher's (VA), Groton, River, or St. Andrew's (DE), NMH emerged victorious in each contest, thereby earning the trophy. (The loss to St. Andrew's (FL) did not count as part of the Royal Palms Tournament.)
In addition to concluding the spring trip with a team trophy, two individuals also garnered recognition for their performances this week. Midfielder Aidan Buick (Cohasset, MA) and goalie Ben Hansell (Montclair, NJ) were each named to the All-Tournament Team. For his part, Buick led all midfielders in scoring and was near the lead for all players. He demonstrated great poise with the ball and at the defensive end of the field. Hansell emerged this week as the heart of the NMH defense, equally capable of stopping one-on-one chances, sending half-field outlet passes, and leading the clear himself. On several occasions while the NMH defense was still figuring things out, Hansell stepped up his play to keep NMH in games.
After packing things up at the field on Saturday morning, the boys from NMH headed back to the hotel, packed up, and headed to the airport to return home for a couple days before resuming spring term classes on Tuesday. Upon returning to campus, NMH will hold try-outs to secure its final roster for the upcoming 2007 season. The roster will be completed by Saturday, March 24 when NMH will host its annual play-day at Keene State College. This year, NMH will be joined by Belmont Hill and Governor's Academy. After that, NMH will continue with the rest of its schedule on Wednesday, March 28 as they travel south to Greenwich, CT to face the Brunswick School in its league opener.

They will assume the leadership of the varsity squad as they begin their season on Friday night against St. Andrew's (FL).
An extremely aggressive and athletic defender, Elmquist resumes his duties as a captain that began last season as a quad-captain. He is the son of Cheryle and Bror Elmquist of Rolling Bay, WA. Elmquist will attend the Savannah College of Art and Design next year.
Bigelow joined NMH this year after having spent the past four years at the Rivers School (MA). A starter since his sophomore year, Bigelow ended his career there leading the league in points per game (4.58) and finishing third in the league in points with 56 and first in assists (for the second time) with 34, despite being sidelined for the start of the season with an injury. For his efforts, he was named an ISL all-star. Bigelow also was named to the NESSLA Senior East-West all-star game, scoring two goals and two assists in the game, playing against NMH alums Pete Kennedy '06 and Tom Howley '06. Over the summer, Tim played for the Top Gun Fighting Clams, leading the team in assists and points, and was named a Top 205 all-star. A three-sport athlete, Bigelow was also a member of the NMH Class A New England Championship soccer team (after being named an ISL all-star for leading his team in goals and points at Rivers) and the NMH varsity ice hockey team. Kennedy, Howley Shine in All-star Game
May 28, 2006
This afternoon NMH seniors Tom Howley (Colonia, NJ) and Pete Kennedy (Needham, MA) represented NMH as members of the Division I West team in the forty-seventh annual New England Secondary School Lacrosse Association (NESSLA) East-West Senior All-Star games. The game was an exciting affair, boasting the best seniors from all across New England. While the West succumbed to an outstanding defense and terrific transition offense by the East squad, a team featuring twelve athletes going to play at Division I colleges. Still, the West, coached by Salisbury’s Bobby Wynne, Loomis’ Jim Wilson, and NMH’s Jeff Neill, battled hard and put up a good fight. Howley and Kennedy each contributed with several shots on net.

Elmquist, Howley Named All-League
May 21, 2006
Based upon the vote of opposing league coaches, junior long-stick midfielder Erik Elmquist (Rolling Bay, WA) and senior attackman Tom Howley (Colonia, NJ) were each named Western New England Prep School Lacrosse Association (WNEPSLA) all-stars.
Elmquist emerged as a preeminent long-stick midfielder in the league this season. His 96 groundballs led the Hoggers. He also led the team in face-offs. His aggressive defense paved the way for a defensive unit that limited opponents to just 8 goals per game. Most impressively, Elmquist also proved to be an offensive threat. In typical fashion, Elmquist regularly stripped the player he was covering of the ball, scooped up the loose-ball, and raced up the field in transition, where he scored 6 goals (including one man-down tally) and 8 assists on the season. Elmquist is one of only four players to start every game. For his achievements, Elmquist was named a first-team all-star.
Howley proved himself to be the top offensive threat for the Hoggers this season. For his part, as a team quad-captain, Howley totaled a team-high 44 points on a team-high 37 goals and 7 assists. In this sense, he shouldered over one-third of the scoring load, despite regularly drawing opponents’ top defenders. Also one of only four players to start all 19 games this season, Howley contributed four man-up goals and one man-down score. A very disciplined player, Howley was equally capable of scoring on outside shots, off of dodges, or on inside feeds. After three years at NMH, Howley will move on to play lacrosse at Skidmore College in the fall. For his performance this season, Howley was named a second-team all-star.
Two Hoggers in Senior All-star Game
May 15, 2006
Recently senior quad-captains Peter Kennedy (Needham, MA) and Tom Howley (Colonia, NJ) were selected to represent NMH in the annual New England Secondary School Lacrosse Association (NESSLA) Senior East-West All-star game. The game will be held at the B.B.& N. School in Cambridge, MA on Sunday, May 28 at 3:00pm. Kennedy and Howley will represent the West in the Division I game, which will immediately follow the Division II/III game at 1:00pm. Playing in this game is an honor bestowed upon seniors from each team in the Western New England Prep School Lacrosse Association (WNEPSLA) for their distinguished achievements throughout the course of the present season. Aside from serving as the emotional core of the team so far this season, both Kennedy and Howley have earned the respect of opposing players and coaches alike. Howley, a quad-captain, ends the season as the team-leader in goals, points shots, man-up goals, and man-down goals. He will go on to play at Skidmore College. Kennedy, also a quad-captain, scored 19 points on 9 goals and 10 assists this season despite missing five games due to injury. Kennedy will go on to play lacrosse and soccer at Union College in the fall.
Brennan and Pfeifer Names Athletes of the Week
05/22/06
For the week of May 14-20, 2006, senior midfielders Nick Brennan (Falmouth, ME) and Nick Pfeifer (Newton, MA) were named Athletes of the Week.
According to coach Jeff Neill: "Instrumental in Wednesday's come-from-behind 9-8 win over Kimball Union and in Saturday's 12-4 loss to Loomis Chaffee (presently ranked #19 in the country) were senior midfielders Nick BrennanandNick Pfeifer. Against Kimball Union Academy, Pfeifer had one goal and one assist in the first half despite NMH's being down 6-3, but then Brennan aided in NMH's comeback in the second half with an assist on the Hoggers' sixth goal before Pfeifer was able to tie the game up at eight apiece with seven minutes left to play. The Hoggers finally took the lead as Pfeifer assisted Brennan on the game winner with 42 seconds left to play to secure the win. On Saturday, after spotting Loomis a 5-0 lead just eight minutes into the contest, the Hoggers received an incredible boost from Brennan and Pfeifer, who showed incredible heart and composure in not giving up, and instead, figuring into three of NMH's four goals, matching the play of the extremely talented Pelicans almost shift-for-shift."
Elmquist Named Quad-Captain
04/28/06
Today junior Erik Elmquist (Rolling Bay, WA) was named a captain of the varsity lacrosse team. Elmquist will serve as captain through graduation next spring. So far this season, Elmquist has established himself as one of the dominant long-stick midfielders in the league. He has started all 10 games for the Hoggers, scored 4 goals, assisted on 4 others, and collected 59 groundballs. Furthermore, Elmquist has proven himself to be the team’s best face-off midfielder, winning 57% of his draws. Elmquist’s being named quad-captain alongside Peter Kennedy, Tom Howley, and Harv Schaefer comes on the heels of the finest individual performance of his career. Against Albany Academy on Wednesday, Elmquist scored 1 goal and assisted on 2 others while also scooping 13 groundballs and winning 8 of 13 face-offs. He was elected captain based on the votes of his peers.
