Northfield Mount Hermon offers one of the broadest athletic programs among secondary schools in the country. Students compete in 21 interscholastic sports on more than 60 teams that include varsity, junior varsity, and junior levels. In addition to interscholastic teams, NMH runs intramural athletics (soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball), and offers an extensive outdoor program.

Athlete of the Week
may 5, 2008
The Athletes of the Week are Delia Flanagan ’09 from girls varsity lacrosse and Eden Ayer ’11 from the outdoor team.
Delia Flanagan has consistently been the core of the lacrosse team. This Saturday she scored five goals and assisted on three goals. She has scored 47% of our team's goals this season. Delia has also dominated the stats with ground ball possessions. She is an incredible presence on the field, both offensively and defensively. Offensively, she is fearless in driving to the cage; defensively, she has a "wicked" check and double-teams with a vengeance.
Eden Ayer was instructor Steve Allison's tandem canoe partner in the upper Ashuelot River race on Saturday. Five tandem canoe pairings were entered in the recreational section of the race by the NMH Outdoor team. The Ayer/Allison partnership took first place in this division of the 9-mile race which was paddled from downtown Keene to West Swanzey. Eden was bow paddler in the Ayer/Allison canoe, and according to Allison, never flagged in providing positive forward momentum during the 115 minutes the pair were on the water. Near the finish line Allison asked Eden if she had ever won a race before. She replied, "I don't think I have ever been in a race before." The race was completed in cold and showery weather, with recent flood debris providing challenging paddling conditions requiring sound technical paddle strokes in addition to consistent speed.
Congratulations Delia and Eden!
Contest of the Week

The NMH track team’s win over Andover and Loomis is the Contest of the Week.
NMH - 65.5
Andover – 61
Loomis 45.5
The NMH boys knew they were in for tough meet against two strong teams. They met Andover last week and won by two points and were ready for their opponents to come out fighting. With Spencer Russell ’08 still recovering from an injury, NMH knew that every point mattered. The meet started in its favor with Greg Payton ’10 winning three events: the long jump, the 200-meter dash, and the high jump. Jason Green ’09 came back this meet after an injury and placed third in the long jump and was the lead leg in NMH’s second-placing 4x100m relay team. Ryan Fluence ’10 placed third in the 100-meeter hurdles and fourth in a close 300-meeter hurdle race. Jim Montague ’08 won the triple jump and was able to place third in the 400m and 300-meter hurdle. The 800m race was one of the most exciting with Tim Liponis ’08 shaving off several seconds to win the event and Kade Krichko ’08 right on his heels with a second place finish.
In the field events, Albert Maldonado ’08 won the discus with Zach Shulterbrant ’09 and Dante Wooten ’08 taking third and fourth. Dante Wooten, Mark Fishman ’09, and Albert Maldonado weren't able to push out the top guy in the shot put, but placed second, third, and fourth, respectively. Simon McCormack ’08 placed thirrd in the javelin. Quinneil Simmons ’10 made his debut on the varsity squad and placed fourth in his first triple jump.
Tim Liponis was disqualified in the 1500m for cutting in too close to his opponent, which took a second place finish, or 3 points, from the team. Coming into the last two events, the 3000m and the 4x400m relay, NMH was 1 point ahead of Andover. Tim was looking to earn some points back for the team. He had an awesome race and pulled ahead by a full 2 seconds to win the event. Then the Hoggers found out Tim got disqualified again, this time because of one of his team members was cheering him on and running beside him for stretch, which is not allowed. It was obviously not intended to be a pacer but the rule was upheld. This meant that if NMH didn't win the 4x400m relay, the team wouldn't win the meet. The first two legs of the 4x400m relay (Jim Montague and Colin Murphy ’09) were able to take an initial lead but Andover had two strong runners remaining. Jesse Dietrick ’09 was able to keep close to their third leg but Andover's fourth leg was a bullet from the start. Ryan Fluence worked his best but wasn't able to pass him. They thought the meet was over, until they found out that Andover had disqualified in the 4x400m, giving NMH the win. The team faces Choate in an away meet this Wednesday.
