NMH @ NEIRA championships
Saturday, May 26
Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester MA

1500 meters on Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester MA
Conditions: calm in morning, light winds building in afternoon

Varsity B1
Philip Cortes (c), Jack Holbrook, Luke Snelling, Reed Kennedy, Jesse Mayhew, Nick Popoli, Ross Blankenship, Aaron Bruker, Eli Durmer

Race Summary:
In their qualifying heat at the NEIRA, the NMH first varsity placed fourth behind Kent (the eventual NEIRA Champion), St. Paul's, and Brookline, finishing ahead of Shrewsbury and E.O.Smith. NMH and Brookline were in a tight race until the 1000m mark. At that point, Brookline made a move and NMH could not reel them back in. Kent and St. Paul's advanced to the grand final. Brookline and NMH advanced to the petite final. In the petite final, NMH finished sixth behind Salisbury, Tabor, East Lyme, Brunswick, and Brookline. Although the NMH felt that they had a good, clean start, they found themselves down nearly immediately and could not charge back. Despite the loss, the crew felt they rowed their best race.

Junior Varsity B2
Walker Metcalfe (c), Mike Kim, Cleo Suels, Bosco Cheng, Gabe Wittman, Harrison Fox, Adam Phillips, Arun Ghosh, Gardner Howe

Race Summary:
NMH rowed their most exciting race of the season in their morning heat. Down after a rocky start, NMH first began to move on Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury tried to hold them off with a power ten, but NMH took a seat on every stroke and then took their own power 20 to gain a lead on Tabor as well. NMH finished with a strong sprint to reach open water on both crews. Unfortunately, three excellent crews finished significantly ahead to reach the finals. Despite the early end to the day, the boys were pumped. After a long season of two hour practices and Saturday defeats, NMH finally got a taste of real racing. Many of the guys in this boat will be trying out for spots in the varsity boat next year, so this experience will carry them to the next level of competition.

Novice B3
Lauren Siket (c), Josh Raymond, Brett Zolkos, Andrew Baldwin, Andrew Ness, Michael Verney, Joel Colony, Adit Kafrawi, Dan Reid

Race Summary:
One month ago, the novice eight rowed their first race on the same course against many of these same crews. Then they finished 55 seconds behind the Exeter crew in a time of 6:26. On Saturday, the novice crew looked like a seasoned eight, finishing more than a minute faster and much closer to their competition. Mostly freshmen and sophomores, these guys represent the future of our team, and we have a lot to look forward to in the next few years.

NMH vs Andover
Saturday, May 19
Connecticut River, Gill MA

1500 meters on Connecticut River, Gill MA
Conditions: light current, moderate headwind

Varsity B1
Philip Cortes (c), Jack Holbrook, Luke Snelling, Reed Kennedy, Jesse Mayhew, Nick Popoli, Ross Blankenship, Aaron Bruker, Eli Durmer

Race Summary:
Facing a crew to whom they had lost at the beginning of the season, the NMH crew altered their race strategy. NMH jumped to a lead off the line and settled into the race at a higher stroke rating (37). The Andover crew steadily moved on NMH and, at 2:30, had a boatlength of open water. By 3:30, that lead had grown to two boat lengths of open. NMH ran out of steam and Andover pulled away to win by a comfortable margin.

Results:
1. Andover 4:20.1
2. NMH 4:41.1

Junior Varsity B2
Walker Metcalfe (c), Mike Kim, Cleo Suels, Bosco Cheng, Gabe Wittman, Harrison Fox, Adam Phillips, Arun Ghosh, Gardner Howe

Race Summary:
After losing twice to the boys third boat in practice this week, the junior varsity had two competitors in mind as they lined up against the Andover second boat: their opponent and their novice colleagues. NMH rowed well and strong, staying close for the first 1000 m, but then allowed Andover to put some distance between the boats during the last 500 meters. Twenty-six seconds behind does not set a benchmark to remember, but this was the best race so far this season for the second boat and they look forward to their final races at New Englands next Saturday.

Results:
1. Andover 4:30.9
2. NMH 4:57.4

Novice B3
Lauren Siket (c), Josh Raymond, Brett Zolkos, Andrew Baldwin, Andrew Ness, Joel Colony, Michael Verney, Dan Reid, Ian Buffam

Race Summary:
Third boat was pumped to race, but found their competition to be very quick off the line. NMH struggled to maintain their set through several motorboat wakes that Andover handled cleanly, and several crabs midway through the race hurt boatspeed and confidence. NMH looked sluggish as they passed the home crowd, their spirits sapped and their power drained. Thankfully, the third boat gets at least one more chance to row the race plan they do so well in practice.

Results:
1. Andover 4:42.09
2. NMH 5:14.04

NMH at St Paul's with St John's
12 May 2001

1500 meters on Turkey Pond, Concord NH
Conditions: warm, light tailwind

Varsity B1
Philip Cortes (c), Jack Holbrook, Luke Snelling, Reed Kennedy, Jesse Mayhew, Ross Blankenship, Adam Phillips, Aaron Bruker, Eli Durmer

Race Summary:
The boys' varsity boat placed a distant third behind St. John's and St. Paul's. St. John's jumped to an early lead off the start, 2 seats ahead of St. Paul's and 4 seats up on NMH. One minute into the race, NMH trailed by a boat length. Over the next thirty strokes, the margin grew to one length of open water and the competition began to pull away. The NMH boat was able to incorporate into the race the technical improvements they made over the course of the week but they were outpaced by bigger and stronger crews.

Results:
1. St. John's 4:19.9
2. St. Paul's 4:25.0
3. NMH 4:44.4

Junior Varsity and Novice Race Summary:
The junior varsity rowed twenty two seconds slower than they had two days earlier over a similar distance with similar conditions. The novice eleven seconds slower.

Kent at NMH
5 May 2001

1500 meters on Connecticut River
Conditions: blustery headwind, strong current

Varsity B1 Race Summary:
Facing the top boys crew in New England, the NMH vasity crew was easily outdistanced but fought through poor racing conditions to minimize the margin of defeat. The crew will work this week to continue to improve their technique and increase boat speed as they prepare for a race against St. Paul's and St. John's.
Results:
Philip Cortes (c), Jack Holbrook, Luke Snelling, Reed Kennedy, Jesse Mayhew, Nick Popoli, Adam Phillips, Aaron Bruker, Eli Durmer
1. Kent 5:17
2. NMH 5:36

Junior Varsity and Novice Race Summary:
Despite the large margin of defeat against Kent, both the JV and novice boats rowed cleaner and more controlled races than earlier races this week. We still have a long way to go to compete with the best crews in New England, but we're starting to race like we practice. Experience is only going to make these boats faster.
Results:

NMH v Salisbury
2 May 2001

1500 meters at Salisbury, CT
Conditions: light tailwind, hot

Varsity B1
Philip Cortes (c), Jack Holbrook, Luke Snelling, Reed Kennedy, Jesse Mayhew, Nick Popoli, Adam Phillips, Aaron Bruker, Eli Durmer
Race Summary:
The NMH boat jumped to an early lead, gaining four seats on Salisbury during the first twenty strokes of race. Salisbury soon pulled to within two seats of NMH and, throughout the body of the race, the two crews raced side by side. NMH started their sprint with 300m to go and made a move on Salisbury. Salisbury countered, regaining lost ground during their sprint. NMH showed great fortitude and held off the hard-charging Salisbury crew, completing the 1500m course in 4:29.75, approximately two feet ahead of Salisbury.
Results:
1. NMH 4:29.75
2. Salisbury 4:29.85

Junior Varsity and Novice Race Summary:
The boys 2nd and 3rd boats wilted under a strong sun Wednesday against a solid Salisbury program. The boys JV started high and felt good for the first half of the race, but sagged as the high rating sapped their strength for the last 500-m. Salisbury's 2nd boat continued to walk away from NMH, posting a time equal to that of their varsity set the day before. The novice boat struggled in the middle part of their race after spotting Salisbury to a length lead for the first 500-m. Looking rushed and ragged, the novice know they have better races ahead of them. We do not yet have our racing legs.

Results:
Junior Varsity B2
Walker Metcalfe (c), Mike Kim, Cleo Suels, Bosco Cheng, Gabe Wittman, Wayne Ting, Gardner Howe, Arun Ghosh, Adit Kafrawi
1. Salisbury 4:35
2. NMH 5:01

2. NMH 5:15

Gazette Regatta at the Oxbow
28 April 2001

1350 meters on the Oxbow, Northampton MA
Conditions: Medium head- and cross-wind, light chop

Varsity B1
Philip Cortes (C), Jack Holbrook, Luke Snelling, Reed Kennedy, Jesse Mayhew, Nick Popoli, Adam Phillips, Aaron Bruker, Eli Durmer
Race Summary:
The boys' varsity crew rowed to its first victory of the season on Saturday at the Gazette Regatta in Northampton. Unable to row all week due to flooding on the Connecticut River, the crew practiced on the Oxbow during the morning to get a feel for their new shell. In the race, the crew quickly outdistanced their competitors and continued to lengthen their lead with each stroke. The closest boat finished well behind NMH. The Connecticut River is back down and, this week, the boys will prepare for races against Salisbury (Wednesday, away) and Kent (Saturday, home) -- two much stronger crews.
Results:
1. NMH 4:57.1
2. Northampton 5:20.1
3. Stonington 5:22.1
4. Lowell 5:25.1

Junior Varsity B2
Walker Metcalfe (c), Mike Kim, Cleo Suels, Bosco Cheng, Gabe Wittman, Wayne Ting, Gardner Howe, Arun Ghosh, Adit Kafrawi
Race Summary:
The JV raced from behind in a staggered start and found the lead crew cutting into their lane early in the race. Forced to avoid a collision, NMH moved out into the neighboring crew's lane for clearer water. The disruption should not have been too costly, but the longer course and the distraction unsettled our crew. Regaining their composure by the halfway point, NMH pulled through one boat and gained on Hanover's varsity. The recovery was not enough for a victory today. Lesson one: Never let another crew distract your concentration from your own boat and your own technique.
Results:
1. Hanover 5:57
2. NMH 6:05
3. Northampton 6:15

Novice B3
Lauren Siket (c), Josh Raymond, Brett Zolkos, Andrew Baldwin, Andrew Ness, Harrison Fox, Michael Verney, Joel Colony, Dan Reid
Race Summary:
The novice jumped to an early lead in their race, but then jumped a seat in their excitement. Repair and discussion with race officials proved costly as the competition moved past, leaving NMH far behind. Frustrated and angry, the novice rowed with an intensity they had not yet experienced and began to move their boat like they had not yet believed possible. The two length lead of the Hanover boat evaporated under the NMH attack, but Wayland-Weston's varsity remained far ahead. Lesson two: Intensity makes for a faster boat, and you need never give up on a boat that pulls ahead early in a race.
Results:
1. Wayland-Weston 5:49
2. NMH 6:11
3. Hanover 6:28

Exeter/Andover Invitational
21 April 2001

1500 meters on Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester MA
conditions: gusty, cross- and head-wind; rough

Race Summary:
The top rowing programs in New England took NMH to school Saturday, demonstrating to each of our crews that fall regattas and pre-season talk mean nothing once spring racing begins. The NMH boys' varsity crew placed 5th in its first race of the season. After a difficult start, the crew took a while to settle into their race plan and crossed the finish line well out of contention for first place. The crew will return to the water on Tuesday, with a sense of the competition and some adjustments that need to be made. Our JV and Novice crews gained valuable first race experience and a healthy appreciation for the amount of improvement needed. Unsettled starts and poor technique make for a long 1500-m race. We plan to be much closer by the end of the season.
