Boys regatta @ the Head of the Fish
Saturday, October 30th
Fish Creek, Saratoga NY
Distance: 2.5 mi
Conditions: calm and mild, excellent conditions for racing
Race summary:
The NMH varsity rowed its most powerful race of the season today
in Saratoga, earning a sixth place finish in a very large field
of 40 boats. Our stroke pair of Gabriel Costa '06 and Naim
Culhaci '05 set a solid rating of 30-31 strokes per minute for
the body of the race, while our bow pair of Hunter Keil '05 and
Jon Russell '06 matched the timing and power of the stern pair.
Coxswain Teresa Le '07 showed confidence and command of her
boat. The Big Red finished just ahead of two fine crews that had
placed well at last week's Head of the Charles and finishes its
fall regatta season with a W-L record of 67 - 10.

The second four of Kam Bulat '05, Nick Carr '05, Tarek Ali
'05, and Kevin Pai '06, joined the first four to row in the
eights race later in the day. The boys finished 9th out of 37
entries, rowing well for the first 3/4 of the race, but then
fading into a gusty headwind and running out of gas in their
tired legs.

Race summary:
NMH's A-boat raced to a third-place finish at the Textile River
Regatta, the first big regatta of the fall rowing season in New
England. Shaking off the distractions of a late arrival to the
course, the boys earned bronze medals behind two strong fours
from St Johns. This was not our best race performance, with
several late crabs and imprecise timing at the catch, but it was
good to finally compete again after a month of training on the
Connecticut. We have much to work on this week as we prepare to
race at the Head of the Connecticut Regatta next Sunday.
NMH A (Big Red): Teresa Le (cox), Gabriel Costa (stroke), Naim
Culhaci, Hunter Keil, Jon Russell (bow)
NMH's B-boat earned a seventh-place finish in the same event.
Most of these boys have less than a year of experience under
their belts, and they have made good progress in their
connection and timing in recent weeks. Their coach was impressed
with the SEND these boys were giving their boat as they passed
under the bridge at the 3 mile mark, but we really need to
match our releases better if we want to apply power from a
stable platform. The set in the Good Shepherd was a little rocky!
NMH B (Good Shepherd): Ryan Gagnon (cox), Shek Liu, Kam Bulat,
Nick Carr, Kevin Pai (bow)
