Race Summary
The boys varsity four brought home the coveted Head of the Fish
trophy after a survival test on Fish Creek in upstate New York
today. Strong, swirling winds played havoc with boat launchings
and steering throughout the day, but NMH were up to the test and
maintained their poise while less experienced crews faltered in
the confusion and crowds at the docks. The boys are excited to
finally bring home some hardware after a successful season of
head racing this fall. Their families, friends, and coach are
proud of each of them.

Race Summary
The boys varsity four were the fourth fastest high school in a
very competitive field from around the country and Canada.
Racing into a stiff headwind, NMH shrugged off an uneven set
during the first mile and found better balance in the turns. As
the set improved, NMH began to steadily move through boats
seeded ahead of them. In the difficult second half of the
course, Philip Mange steered an excellent course through a maze
of bridges and sharp corners. His tight line through the turns
shaved many seconds off his crew's time. Jack Holbrook set a
strong tempo in the stroke seat. By keeping the rating at 30
strokes per minute as planned, he allowed his crew to make a
strong move late in the race as other crews tired. Luke Snelling
maintained he had the largest puddles in the boat, although
rumors that bowman Jesse Mayhew was outpulling him during
several tens remain unconfirmed. Nick Popoli set a relaxed and
confident tone just before the start of the race, sharing a joke
with his teammates that he had been planning for weeks. His
coach wants to hear the punchline, however.
NMH sprinted to the finish at a rating of 32, and felt that
these last thirty strokes were some of their best of the season.
The boys earned eighth place in the 19 and under division
against 27 high school and collegiate crews, and finished ahead
of freshman crews from Syracuse and Northeastern Universities.

Race Summary
In their first race of the fall season, the boys varsity four
demonstrated that they will be a contender at the Head of
the Charles in three weeks. NMH were confident in their race
plan, rowing well at 28 strokes per minute, and moving easily
through slower boats throughout the entire race. Philip Mange
provided excellent leadership from the coxswain seat in his first varsity
race.
