Summary:

The NMH boys regatta brought home gold and silver medals from their first visit to Lake Onota, opening their fall racing season with a nice performance in rough conditions. The short course allowed the boys to row at higher ratings than normal, but they held their timing and ratio throughout. Seniors Teresa Le and Alex Palmisano demonstrated their experience and skill in negotiating the difficult rolling waves and keeping their crews on course. This year's team is less experienced than we've had in a number of years, so I was very happy to have such skilled coxswains in the boats today. The boys have been developing very well in practice, especially in recent weeks, so we were all glad to get a chance to compete before the head racing season begins in earnest in October.

The hosts of the Bernie Ryan regatta treated all teams to a pleasant award ceremony and food fest after the racing. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the chance to learn more about some history of rowing in the United States, especially the courageous life of Ernestine Bayer, who died this month at the age of 97. Mrs. Bayer was a pioneer in women's rowing for most of her life, and set an example of perseverance and vision that broke down nearly every barrier placed in her path. There really are heroes and heroines in this world, and I believe her life is an example that our kids can learn from.

NMH boys regatta @ Tail of the Fish
Fish Creek, Saratoga Lake, NY
Saturday, October 7th, 2006

distance: 3500 meters
conditions: flat water, light tailwind, beautiful racing conditions

Race summary:

The boys’ regatta team had a successful outing in Saratoga Saturday, earning two first place finishes against good competition from upstate NY schools and clubs. In the varsity four race, NMH raced in their newly christened shell “Bring Me My Arrows!” and earned their first victory on Fish Creek since the fall of 2000. Coxswain Teresa Le ’07 and oarsmen Jeff Breau ’07, Eli Pack ’07, Rob Downey ’07, and Spencer Hattendorf ’08 rowed a strong and controlled race, perhaps their best piece of the season so far. In the novice four race, NMH were grinning from stern to bow as they pulled into the docks following their event. Coxswain Alex Palmisano ’07, Lucas Ewing ’07, YoungKyu Kwon ’07, Brodrick Childs ’09, and Henry Hutcheson ’08 raced very strongly to win gold by nearly a minute. Their time would have placed them sixth in the varsity race, which in hindsight would have been a more appropriate event for their skill and speed today. Well done team!

A word about “Bring Me My Arrows!”:

Thanks to the generosity of parents and friends of the team in recent years, our spring ergathon has provided monetary support for the purchase and repair of the equipment we use. This year, we used the proceeds to buy a three-year-old racing shell from the Gunnery School to replace the boat we lost last October in the floods at the Head of the Connecticut. On Thursday, the team brought the new shell into the chapel and with the whole school singing “Jerusalem”, we christened her “Bring Me My Arrows!” in honor of the students’ favorite verse. It was a moment I will long remember, and I am grateful to work with a team and a school that can make something like this so special. Thank you!

NMH boys regatta @ the Head of the Charles
Charles River, Boston MA
Sunday, 22 October

distance:  3 miles
conditions:  cool and sunny, moderate crosswind in places, good water

NMH pulled to a sixth-place finish in the Mens Youth 4s event at the Head of the Charles regatta Sunday, racing against 50 crews from around the United States and Canada.  NMH were the second fastest US high school and placed higher at this prestigious race than any NMH crew in at least a decade.  Our time of 17:51.5 was less than eight seconds off the times of Princeton and Boston Universities' freshman boats.  Coxswain Teresa Le '07 was outstanding today, taking her crew on a fantastic line through the tight turns at Weeks and Eliot Bridges, and clearing slower crews out of her path with a firm voice.  Oarsmen Jeff Breau '07, Spencer Hattendorf '08, Rob Downey '07, and Henry Hutcheson '08 were strong and powerful during the early half of the race, setting a tempo that allowed them to maintain their speed during the second half of the course where other crews faltered.  The crew knew they had rowed well as they pulled into the docks, but we were all caught a little off guard when we heard the results, perhaps the coach more than others.  I should have known they were onto something special when I couldn't catch them on my bike after the halfway point - I thought I was getting out of shape, but they were just moving so fast!
