Named NMH Athlete of the Week for February 2, 2004

55...Dorien Brown

Dorien comes to NMH after a storied year at Bellingham HS. He helped lead Bellingham to the Massachusetts Division III State Championship alongside Matt Blue ( St. Lawrence '07). Dorien averaged 19 points, 13 rebounds and 7 blocks per contest on his way to being named All-State and League All-Star. Dorien was named to the Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic teams. Dorien is a fierce and hardworking competitor. He has unlimited potential. Dorien spent his AAU days playing for Mo Vasquez's Metro Boston Club. He will be studying English, Philosophy, Expository Writing, Astronomy, Harlem Renaissance, Algebra II and Anthropology. Dorien has signed a National Letter of Intent to play his college ball at JACKSONVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY.

JR is in his third year at NMH. Last year, JR was a major contributor to the success of our Junior Varsity "A" team. JR led the team with 15 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds per game. He is a strong competitor and is very athletic. JR is, also, a member of NMH's track and field team. During his junior year, JR will be studying Chemistry, US History, Precal, American Literature, Calculus and Chinese III. He is getting early interest from Div. II and Div. III schools.

Nahri comes to NMH after spending four years at Eastside HS. Eastside finished their year 11-12 last year and lost in the league semi-finals. He led his team with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. He is a raw and athletic wing. He will be running track in the spring. During his Post-Graduate year, Nahri will be studying Anthropology, English, Genetics and Ethical Decisions, History of Jazz, Harlem Renaissance, Multiculturalism in US History and Ecology and Field Biology. Nahri will attend Eastern Connecticut College in the fall.

Tony comes to NMH from Somerset High School where he had a story book year. As a junior his team had a 2-20 record. His senior year, he led Somerset HS  to 21-4 record and a semifinal loss in the state Div II tournament. Tony nearly averaged a quadruple double. He averaged 23 points, 12 rebounds, 11 blocks and 7 assists per contest. Tony was named the Eastern Athletic Conference MVP, and was named to the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald's All-Scholastic teams. Bostonpreps.com named Tony the Massachusetts Player of the year. Tony was also given the Dave Cowens Award which recognizes the Southeastern Mass student-athlete of the year. Tony leaves Somerset HS in the very capable hands of his younger brother, Bud. Tony played his AAU ball with Jason Elliot's Rhode Island Hawks squad. During his Post Graduate year, Tony will be studying English, Environmental Studies, Astronomy, Violence and Nonviolence and Calculus. He will choose between baseball and track and field in the spring. Tony has signed a national letter of intent to play his college basketball at BOSTON UNIVERSITY.

15...Erik Holm

6'3''.....185.....'04 Guard.....Vancouver, BC

Last year, Erik attended West Vancouver High School in Vancouver, British Columbia. Erik led his team to a 23-10 record, the North Shore championship and 10th place in the BC AAA provincials. He led his team with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists per contest. He was named North Shore First Team All-Star, North Shore playoff MVP, BC Provincial All-Star, BC All-Star game MVP, BC slam dunk champion and slam dunk champion at Steve Gibbs' Hoop Mountain summer camp. Erik is a tremendous athlete who represented Canada in Junior Olympic down-hill ski events. This year Erik will be studying English, Biology, US History, War, Calculus and the Islamic Middle East. He will be a member of NMH's track and field team in the spring. Erik made the honor roll for Fall term. Erik has over a 1300 on his SATs. Erik will attend TRINITY (CT) COLLEGE in the fall where he will join fellow Hogger Robert Taylor '03.

31...Andrew Lyell

Andrew joins the NMH community from Portsmouth HS in Rhode Island. Last year, he averaged 22 points, 7 assists, 8 rebounds and 2 steals per game. He led his team to a 16-7 record and a loss in the state semi-finals. Andrew was named 1st team All-Division, Newport County Player of the Year and All-Tournament at the State championships. This year, Andrew will be able to see time at both guard positions. We expect big contributions from Andrew for Bill Batty's club. Andrew was recently ranked the #1 junior in the state of Rhode Island. During his junior year, Andrew will be studying Religion in America at the Millennium, Environmental Studies, Multiculturalism in US History, Latin, American Literature and Precalculus. Andrew is getting early looks from the Big East and Atlantic 10 conferences. Andrew will play his AAU ball with the PLAYAZ Basketball club, New England.

14...Colin McIntosh

This junior comes to NMH via Boston College High School. Last year, Colin averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. He led his team to a 19-2 season and a second round loss in the state tournament. He was named first team All-Catholic Conference for his efforts. Colin is a tremendous athlete with an unlimited upside. He is skilled to play on the perimeter offensively and long enough to defend against anyone on the court. Colin should be a great addition to the NMH community on and off the court. During his junior year, Colin will be studying American Literature, Government and Civil Liberties, Spanish III, Religion in America at the Millennium, Precalculus and Geology. Colin is getting interest from the top college conferences in the country. Colin will play his AAU ball with the New Heights Scholar-Athlete program out of NYC.

21...Boris Meno

Originally form the Congo, Boris has spent the previous 13 years in Paris, France. Boris comes to NMH after spending a year at the Shipley school outside of Philadelphia. Boris led Shipley to the Keystone league regular season and post season championships and a 25-5 record. He was named MVP of the New Jersey Scholastic tournament, MVP of the Boca Raton (FLA) tournament, All-League, All-Main First Team, All-Start Team and MVP of the Keystone League post-season. He averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks per contest. Boris is a tremendous athlete with remarkable shooting touch. He will be an exciting player for Bill Batty's squad this year. Boris will be studying English, Chemistry, US History, Philosophy and Statistics. Boris will be a member of NMH's track and field team in the spring. Boris will play his college ball at DAVIDSON COLLEGE.

10...Kashif Payne

Shif will be the captain of Bill Batty's club this year. Last year, Shif averaged 16.5 points, 7 assists and 2.6 steals per game for NMH. He had over a 2 to 1 assists to turnover ratio. Two years ago, "Shif" attended Archbishop Carroll in Philadelphia. The 5'9'' point guard averaged 18 points, 8 assists and 4 steals per game. He was named team MVP, Catholic League MVP and Player of the Year. He was recently honored as an All American candidate by Street and Smith's. This past summer Shif played for Gary Charles' Long Island Panthers AAU Club. Gary's squad had a terrific summer winning the Providence Hoop Group Jam Fest where Shif was named MVP and winning the Kingwood Classic in Washington DC where Shif was named MVP. Shif attended the prestigious Adidas ABCD basketball camp this summer where he was a teammate of Alex Popp. He was recently ranked the # 45 player in the country by rivalshoops.com. Shif has been named a Pre Season All-American by Street and Smith's magazine. This year for NMH you can expect some great passes, tough defense and some improved range on his jump shot. It should be exciting and up-tempo.  During Shif's senior year, he will be studying Physiology, Economics, Physics, Literature and Composition, Harlem Renaissance, Photography and Issues in the 21st Century. He will join the NMH track and field team for his second year as a sprinter. Kashif runs track for NMH in the Spring. Kashif will play his college ball at the UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO.

34...Alex Popp

Guard.....Winchester, MA

Alex comes to NMH from Winchester High School. Last year, he averaged 19.7 points, 6.2 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game. He was recognized as an All-Tournament player at the BABC Christmas Tourney where he led his team to the championship with 38 points. Alex was named Middlesex League MVP and School Sports Magazine 2nd team All-State. He was named a McDonald's All-American Nominee and finished his career the second all-time leading scorer at Winchester HS. Alex spent his summer playing for Mike Crotty's Middlesex Magic and attended the prestigious Adidas All-American camp where he was a teammate with Kashif Payne. Alex is considered among the best 3 point shooters in the country and we expect great things from Alex this year. Alex will be studying English, Environmental Studies, Precalculus, Ethics, Astronomy and Issues in the 21st Century. Alex will play his college ball for the University of Minnesota.

 

41...Harmony Rose

Forward.....Chapel Hill, NC

Harmony is in his second year at NMH. He joins the varsity squad after earning his stripes with our Junior Varsity "A" squad last year. Harmony averaged 10 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocks per game last year. He is a hard working player and is relentless on the boards. The coaching staff looks for continued growth and hard work from Harmony this year. Harmony is a member of NMH's track and field program. During his Junior year, Harmony will be studying Precalculus, Chemistry, American Literature, Spanish II, Spanish III and US History. Harmony is getting interest from the NESCAC.  

22...Chris Vasiliou

Guard.....Broomall, PA

Chris comes to NMH from Marple Newtown HS. Last year, he averaged 18 points, 7 rebs and 5 assists per game on his way to being named First team All-Central League for his junior and senior years. Chris is an excellent defender who can shoot the 3 or penetrate for a tough basket. He spends his summer as a member of Larry Waiters' Positive Image AAU program in Philadelphia. This year, Chris will be studying English, Violence and Nonviolence, Foreign Policy, Statistics and Astronomy. Chris will play his college basketball at BOSTON UNIVERSITY in the fall.
