Athletes of the Week
may 21, 2007
Clive Weeden '07 and Rebecca Young '08 are the Athletes of the Week for their accomplishments at the New England Track and Field Championships.
The top scorer for the Hoggers was Clive Weeden. Clive placed 6th in the discus (125' 6") and 2nd in the javelin (158' 7"). Clive was seeded 7th in the triple jump and popped a 2-foot personal best to earn an unexpected 2nd place finish.
The meet highlight for the girls was Rebecca Young's defending her title from last year to become the 2007 300IH New England Champion! She was a full second in front of the rest of the field with a strong 47.46-second finish. Rebecca also placed 2nd in the 400 (60.37s) and ran in the 4x400 relay, which finished 4th after being seeded 10th.
May 14, 2007
Ben Weyers ’08, of the New England Champion Boys Ultimate Frisbee team, and TJ Bowler ’07, of the streaking varsity baseball team, are the Athletes of the Week.
Ben Weyers was the go-to huck when the stall count got high. Seeing Ben launching himself above a crowd to win disc after disc, 11 feet in the air was tremendous. It is not for his outrageous scoring amassed, that Ben gets the nod, but for his countless fully-laid-out defensive blocks. Even though offense wins games, Ben's brand of defense wins championships.
In the Hoggers’ three wins last week, TJ Bowler had some great stats: 7-10 at the plate with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, a triple, 5 RBIs and 4 stolen bases hitting out of the leadoff spot. TJ was the spark that got the offense going in each game. Defensively, TJ played very well catching all three games. TJ's hustle, determination, and leadership last week set the tone for the entire team and propelled the Diamond Hoggers victory three times.

Mike Grant '07 in track and field, and Klye Cerutti '08, in girls lacrosse, are the athletes of the week.
Mike Grant let the track team to first place vs. Andover and Loomis. Here are his stats:
He came in first in the long jump, charging 21feet 3 inches, farther than his closest competitor by about a foot.
He came in first in the 200 meter in 22.7 seconds, only 7-10ths shy of a school record.
Mike came in first in the 4x100 relay and ran the anchor leg.
He came in second in the 4x400 relay where it came down to the final steps of the race with Andover squeaking by. The Hoggers ran their fastest time by 10 seconds and Mike had the fastest split on the team and on the year. It was all grit and heart.
Kyle Cerutti against Worcester had 20 saves and four interceptions and stepped up as a defensive force.

Khalil Ali '07 of boys varsity tennis, and Helen Winter '08 of girls varsity tennis
The player of the day for NMH on Saturday was Khalil in the #3 singles contest. Khal played an intelligent consistency game comprised of kick serves, mixed spins on ground strokes, and offensive lobs which drew multiple errors from his opponent. Khal won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Helen has worked her way up the ladder to play at the #4 singles position. This was her first victory of the season and she won 8-0. Her progress on the playing ladder, effort, positive attitude, and this week's win definitely qualifies her as an athlete of the week!
April 23
Zoe Hasting '08 of girls varsity waterpolo
Against Williston, Zoe scored four goals and dominated the hole-position (like a center in basketball) in two-and-a-half quarters of play to help the NMH girls waterpolo team win two in a row. Although NMH lost both games in a tri-meet at Suffiled Academy, Zoe scored one of NMH's two goal's against Suffiled, playing directly against one of the best players in the league. She also socred another four goals against Andover, in a 9–12 grueling match.
April 16
Ablorde Ashigbi '07 and Stephanie Randall '08 of varsity track and field
Ablorde, an Ivy League-bound “weight-man” and co-captain for the Hogger’s track and field team, placed third in the New England Championships last year in the discus throw with a personal record of 128 feet. After last Saturday’s performance in a tri-meet with Cushing and Suffield it is clear that “Big A” is now prepping himself for the gold. He surpassed last year's personal record three out of his four throws on Saturday. On his second attempt of the day, he exploded with a combination of foot speed, technique, and brut strength to launch a throw of 140' 6", his new PR and best of the day. This distance won the event by 29 feet. Ablorde’s impressive victory is one step toward his goal of winning the New England Championship. Expect to see much more from him in the future.
Stephanie achieved not one, not two, but three first place finishes at Saturday's meet. She bested the field in the discus, the shot, and the pole vault to help NMH win a tri meet vs. Cushing and Suffield.
April 9
Rachael Sperry '07 of girls varsity softball
Rachael was 2 for 5 with a double and a walk at the plate in a 17-4 win over Taft. She combined that with a strong pitching performance (7 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8K, 1 HP), holding Taft scoreless through four innings.
April 2
Connor McNamara '09 of boys varsity lacrosse
Connor kicked off his lacrosse career at NMH with a bang. He began the season scoring a goal in his first-ever game against St. Andrew's (FL) despite battling a nagging injury. Then, his individual efforts bolstered NMH with an electric performance against Brunswick, a game in which he in which he showed great prowess and energy in challenging the opposing defense each time he touched the ball. Finally, in the team's home-opening 20-3 win over Canterbury on Saturday, he erupted for three goals, playing both midfield and attack in the game, continuing to impress with his energy. Click here to read the full game reports.

Jules Toraby '07 of the varsity wrestling team won his 100th career match at New Englands just before break, thus getting his name on a banner and on a sandwich in one fell swoop. Jules is a senior from Cos Cob, CT, and lives in Monadnock House. He is a letter winner in wrestling.

Jennine Vizcaino '10 of girls varsity basketball, and Becca Donald '07 and Kelsey Morris'07 of girls varsity swimming
Jennine played the game of her year in against Thayer on Saturday. Here are her game stats: 25 pts, five assists, two rebounds, and one blocked shot.
The NMH girls swim team came in fourth place at the Western New England Prep School Swimming Championships (Northern Division) held at Williston-Northampton on Sunday. All three Lady Hogger relay teams medaled with 2nd place finishes in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay, and a 3rd place show in the 200 freestyle relay. Hoggers earned individual medals by coming in 3rd in the 200 individual medly, 3rd in the 100 butterfly, 2nd in the 100 freestyle, and 2nd in the 100 backstroke. Key to these performance were co-captains Becca and Kelsey . They were the only two Hogger swimmers who traded participating in only one individual event so as to staff the three relays (normally, each swimmer would swim two individual events). Moreover, Becca garnered a 6th place finish with a career best 58.71 in the 100 freestyle, while Kelsey collected a 3rd place medal in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.31. Between the two of them, they indirectly or directly accounted for 129 of the 278 total Hogger points for the afternoon.
february 19
Omar Bey '10, Marty Tarantino '08, and Drew Frazer '07 of varsity wrestiling, and Tim Liponis '08 of boys varsity Nordic skiing
Omar (103), Marty (130), and Drew (189) each won the Class A Championship at their weight class. Each had been seeded first and each dominated in all of their matches, especially in the finals.
In a race against Andover, Tim went off the front with the gun and never looked back. He skated alone throughout the race, obliterating the field by 2:39. That’s more than 12 percent off his next closest competitor’s total time on the track!
february 12
Ivan Auer '09, boys varsity alpine skiing, and Sarah Heist '08, girls varsity wwimming
With only five of our seven varsity A racers in the line-up on Wednesday due to illnesses, Ivan raced his way to a personal best seventh place finish out of 72 varsity racers in our highly competitive Mount Institute Ski League. Ivan's break-out performance, along with the strong racing of the four remaining varsity A racers, led our team to a season-best second place finish!
Against Miss Porter's, Sarah , despite having a cold, equaled her career best time in the 100 yd backstroke and captured second place, sealing the win for the Hoggers with a 95 - 69 final score. Sarah then exceeded expectations at the next meet versus Westminster. Against what was expected to be a very close meet with several must-win races for NMH, Sarah captured two career-best times in the two longest races of the meet. In the 200 yd free, Sarah shaved 1.81 seconds for a career-best 2:09.96, and in the 500 yd free, Sarah chopped more than seven seconds off her previous best, coming in second at 5:51.23. Final score, 96 - 74.
febuary 5
Marty Tarantino '08, boys varsity wrestling, and Kayleigh Monahan '09, girls varsity swimming
Marty had three wins in a match on Saturday, bringing his season record to 25-5. He pinned his Andover opponent who was ranked number 1 in the league (Marty was number 2), and he also posted a convincing 13-4 win over a very good Providence Country Day wrestler.
Kayleigh turned in two career-best times in a meet against Loomis: a 2:04.81 for the 200 yard freestyle (more than five seconds improvement) and a 1:02.98 in the 100 yard backstroke (1.09 second improvement). Against Exeter, Kayleigh again turned in two career-best times: a 25.96 for the 50 freestyle, and 5:33.18 for the 500 yard freestyle (more than eight seconds improvement).
january 29
William Schurman '10, boys varsity alpine skiing
Skiing in his first slalom race for NMH in our highly competitive Mount Institute Ski League, William placed 9th overall among over 60 racers to help the NMH boys varsity alpine team finish 3rd in the race. William accomplished this with only two days of slalom gate training days due to the poor snow conditions this year and the lack of available training space.
january 22
Tyrone Nash '07, boys varsity basketball, and Chris Evans '09, boys varsity swimming
In a win over Proctor, Tyrone's line read...13 points (6-8 FGs), 10 rebounds, 3 assists. In a come-from-behind thriller over New Hampton, he registered 37 points and 13 rebounds.
Chris won two individual events in the Milton/ Andover/ NMH Tri Meet: the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, both in convincing fashion, and then as anchor swimmer on the 400 freestyle relay, he brought the team from a distant fourth (2/3s of a pool length behind) to touch out the Milton A and Andover B relay team for second place. It was one of the most exciting races of the year!
january 15
Daisy Letendre, girls varsity swimming, and Jerrell Williams, boys varsity basketball
Despite the 100-70 loss against Choate, Daisy performed at her peak. Daisy was an underdog coming into the 100 yd breaststroke, with three Choate swimmers having posted superior times earlier in the season. However, Daisy literally out-touched the three Choate nemeses to win the event with a time of season best time 1:14.12. Daisy also took 2nd place in the 200 yd Individual Medley against some of the same Choate competitors, with another season best time of 2:23.40. Daisy also combined forces in an all-sophomore 200 yd Medley Relay to win this opening event. Daisy and teammates closed out the day with a 2nd place 3:59.89 400 yd free relay.
Jerrell posted an outstanding performance when NMH went up against three opponents last week. Here are his stats:
vs. Choate...... 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals
vs. Worcester...30 points (12-17 FGs), 8 rebounds, 5 assists
vs. Hargrave... 18 points (8-12 FGs), 10 rebounds, 4 assists (named NMH outstanding player)
january 8
Jennine Vizcaino '10, of the girls varsity basketball team and Tom DiDonato '08, of the boys varsity hockey team
In the game against Deerfield, Jennine not only amassed some impressive statistics, but used her natural athletic ability to create several scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates. She had 10 pts, 3 assists, 5 TO's, 5 steals, 2 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots, and she guarded Deerfield's best player, holding her to 6 points in regulation time!
Tom was high scorer last week: he scored four of the team's five goals in two games!

november 6
Scott Hollingsworth '07 and Rick Langman '07, varsity football; Kailey Worboys '09, girls varsity soccer
After recovering from an injury that kept her out of two games last week, Kailey recovered by contributing an outstanding performance in each of the girls varsity soccer team's three games last week. Against Loomis Chaffee and then Choate , Kailey contributed quality minutes as a striker, showing great pace, aggressiveness, and play-making abilities, particularly in the offensive third. However, the pinnacle of this week's performance came in NMH's 7-1 victory over Vermont Academy, a game in which Worboys contributed an incredible three goals and an assist. Her first two goals came as the result of hard-nosed, aggressive play inside the box, while the third came as she finished her own penalty kick—earned after a hard foul inside the penalty area—with a beautiful shot into the upper left-hand corner of the net. The hat trick was the first by an NMH player in at least three years. Congratulations to Kailey for this performance!
Scott Hollingsworth '07 vs Cushing
- 4 TD catches and a two-point catch
- nine receptions for 101 yards
Rick Langman '07 vs Cushing

- accounted for 41 of NMH's 43 points and 70 of NMH's 96 offensive plays for 540 of NMH's 666 total yds
- 4 TD passes and 1 rushing TD; three 2-point conversions (2 pass and 1 rush)
October 23
Erika Loomer '08, girls varsity volleyball, and Yuri Moreira '07 and Tim Bigelow '07, boys varsity soccer
A three-year varsity player, Erika was a key player in both matches last week. Against St. Paul's, she recorded 13 assists, a team-leading eight kills, and two stuff blocks. An excellent setter, Erika has expanded her game this year and has assumed hitting, middle blocking, and serve-receive responsibilities. Against Andover, she continued her excellent all-round play before being injured on match point.
Yuri scored the game winner against Andover and the knock-out blow against Kimball Union Academy in games last week. He has scored four finishing blows this year—goals scored in the last five or six minutes of play. Tim, who is committed to Division I lacrosse at Hobart, scored two goals and assisted on another against KUA. Against Andover, he set up the game winner with a great feed to Yuri for the biggest win of the season.
October 2
Carlyn Mehaffey-Coy '08, varsity field hockey, and Michael Grant '07, varsity football
The varsity field hocky team posted three wins last week, and Carlyn was the catalyst in setting up scoring opportunities for NMH. She showed great skill and relentless energy as she carried the ball down the right wing and made well-executed passes to her teammates. She had at least one assist in each of the three games. In addition, she played 110 out of 120 possible minutes.
In a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Worcester, Michael had one long touchdown catch and one touchdown catch called back. On defense, he forced a fumble that led to the winning score. He also shut down the opponent's star receiver, limiting him to one catch.
Contests of the Week
may 21, 2007
NMH boys and girls traveled to Loomis Chaffee to compete in the 68th annual New England DI Track and Field Championships.
The girls went into the meet ranked 11 out of 11 teams, but climbed their way into 9th place with some amazing performances highlighted by Rebecca Young’s 1st place win in the 300 hurdles (defending champion) and 2nd place standing in the 400 meter. She also ran in the 4x400 meter relay, which finished 4th after being seeded 10th. The girls have a lot of youth and spunk and are already looking to build on their strong finish heading into next year.
The boys entered the meet ranked third behind Exeter and Hotchkiss. In a day that had it ups and downs, twists and turns and a lot of drama, the boys ended up tied with Hotchkiss as New England champions! The mathematical odds of a meet of this size ending in a tie for first place are astronomically slim, and it is the first time in at least 20 years that it has happened. NMH and Hotchkiss both officially finish the year as undefeated and champions. Ablorde Ashigbi ’07 placed first in the discus. NMH was led in scoring by Clive Weeden ’07 (17pts) and Alex Boll ’07 (14). Click here for complete highlights.

Boys ULtimate Wins the New Englands!
Northfiled Mount Hermon School hosted the Fourth Annual New England Prep School Ultimate League Championships this Sunday. NMH started the day at 9 am with a defeat of the Hotchkiss School by a score of 11-3. They continued this positive start by beating Concord Academy 12-3. The last team the Hoggers faced in the round-robin was Milton, which they dispatched by a score of 11-8. A 30-minute break allowed the tournament director, Mark Yates, to reseed the teams and set up the playoffs.
NMH faced the talented team of Chase Collegiate out of Waterbury, CT. In sport, the toughest game is most often the semi-final and not the final. This proved true for the boys ultimate team. Somehow, Chase just did not drop the disc. Both teams struggled to score an upwind goal in the 30-mph wind. Neither could for about 30 minutes. A missed pass off the opening pull allowed Chase a chance at the end zone with only one completed pass. They were successful and NMH found itself down at the half by a score of 8-6. Needing to score not once but twice against the wind in the second half was a daunting challenge. These fine young men bowed up and got the job done in a 12-10 victory.
They faced the defending champions of Phillips Andover Academy in the finals. Andover is a talented team, extremely well coached by Scott Hoenig. They battled hard and exhibited an excellent spirit. At the end, NMH would win 13-6.
Going 5-0 in this tournament was an accomplishment that should make the NMH community quite proud. It was made possible in large measure by the volunteer coaching of Clayton Cardin.
Boys ultimate is now 17-2 on the season and heads to Ohio this weekend to face the best teams in the country at the Eastern Championships. Nice going!

Girls Lacrosse
The Hoggers played an outstanding game and beat Worcester 13-6. After a scenic tour of Worcester, NMH arrived at the fields for the start of the game. NMH got off the bus and within 10 minutes had to start playing. But the girls pulled together and focused their attention on winning this game. In the first half, NMH played a solid offensive game. Midfielders Kathryn Dziurzynski '07 and Kristan Dziurzynski '10, Cassie Taylor '07, Emily Arena '08 and Darah Thomas '08 made strong connections, pressured ball well and executed effective double teams. Homes Mattie McQuinn '08, Ana Slavin '08, Colleen Cole '07, and Courtney McCall '07 did well moving the ball and effectively running our plays. Delia Flanagan '09 and Karissa Scano '08 were awesome at getting the ball of the draw and transitioning the ball from our defensive end into our offensive end. Defensively, Abby Zelenka ’08 and Sarah Heist '08 anchored our zone and Kyle Cerutti '08 had an outstanding game in the cage with 20 saves and four interceptions. Overall, this win was a complete team effort. NMH put in the first four goals and then Worcester picked up their play and the game was pretty even with the ball going up and down the field. At halftime the score was 8-5, NMH. The second half started with Worcester putting in the first goal and closing the gap to two goals. But from that point on NMH dominated the game. Both offensively and defensively everything clicked and NMH controlled the ball. Goalie Kyle Cerutti, was a force in the net and did not let in another goal for the last 20 minutes of the game. It was great to watch everything come together, everyone play to the best of their abilities, and get a win!
Goals:
Mattie McQuinn - 3
Darah Thomas - 2
Colleen Cole - 3
Kathryn Dziurzynski - 2
Kristan Dziurzynski - 1

The NMH girls varsity rowed a strong and controlled race against an equally determined Tabor crew. Having returned from Lake Quinsigamond last weekend with over a boat length to make up against the Andover and Exeter crews, NMH has set it's sights on making up this 10-second difference. Everything else is a practice for that rematch 4 weeks from today. With this in mind NMH blasted off the start, quickly making up the 4-seat deficit of lane 1. The next 300 meters were tense as the tips of the blades of the battling crews were separated by inches. But NMH cox'n Keiko Stobaeus '07 wouldn't allow her boat to be pushed off its mark, and Tabor had to adjust their course. By the 500 meter mark NMH had made their move and controlled the rest of the race.

Loomis Chaffee 0
(30-24, 30-27, 30-25)
NMH earned its first victory of the season in a hard-fought match at home. Though inexperienced, Loomis came to play, and in game 1, we were forced to overcome an 11–16 deficit. In game 2, we were down 24–26 then got 3 huge kills from outside hitter James Chen '07 to win the pivotal game. We fell behind 9–15 in game 3, steadied the ship and inched ahead at 25–23, then rode the net play of middle blocker Peter Duplissie-Johnson '08 (2 late game kills and a block) to victory. Joining James and Peter in playing strong games were Kelvin Cheung '08, who played across the back row for the first time this season, and Benson Chiu '08. Benson set for the first time ever, and enabled us to play a 6–2, which features two setters rather than one. As a result, both our setters had good games and our hitting improved.

Boys Varsity Wrestling, Class A Championships
Omar Bey '10 (103), Marty Tarantino '08 (130) and Drew Frazer '07 (189) each won the Class A Championship at their weight class. It marked the third time since the Class A league expanded to 15 teams or more that NMH had three champs (2005 and 1998). The NMH record is five Class A Champs in 1965. Jesse Posl-Rhinehart '08 , top seed at 160, returned to action after a six-week injury layoff and placed third. He won his first two easily, got upset in the semifinals 10-13, and then won two more by pin. Jules Toraby '07 placed fourth and was temporarilarly blocked in getting his 100th win; he has 99. NMH played great defense at the opening of Friday's game and held Andover scoreless for the first 4:30 of the game. After Andover's first points of the night, NMH was leading 9-2. Andover outscored NMH 8-4 over the next 2:00 and cut into the lead at 13-8. NMH took control of the game as they went on a 17-5 stretch and had a 30-13 lead with 5:00 remaining in the half. The teams played even ball over the final 5:00 and NMH went into the locker room with a 42-24 lead. NMH was led by a very balanced attack over the first 20:00 with 9 players getting involved in the scoring. Unsigned senior Gary Correia led NMH with 11 first half points.
The second half saw NMH come out of the break with two spectacular alleyoops from Gary Correia to LaSalle-bound Jerrell Williams '07 including a reverse two handed dunk. Becky Gillig '08 pulled out a season best time of 1:02.77 to win the butterfly, while Kailey Monahan '09 scored a career personal best of 56.06 to with the freestyle. Kailey would go on to win the 100 yard backstroke with her second-best time of the season, 1:04.11. Capturing third in the backstroke with a career best time of 1:08.66 was Sarah Heist '08. Also joining the career-best club for the day was Zoe Hasting '08, who stated her goal for the day was to garner a best-time for the 500 yard freestyle. She did just that by peeling about five seconds off of her previous personal best and swimming the event in 6:25.04, which was good enough to beat both of the Mustang swimmers in the same event.

Coach Sarah Rebick says of the girls team, "The NMH girls cross-country runners showed that they were the team with the most guts at their Nov. 4 meet. We anticipated a close race and the girls knew that they could not hold back, they couldn't wait for the last half mile to race their competitors. NMH (7-3-1) 3 1 4
NMH played Deerfield Academy in a crucial WNEPSSA match with significant postseason implications. NMH once again won the coin toss and elected to take the wind in the first half. For the first ten minutes both teams cautiously played while searching out the elements and their opponent. Fifteen minutes into the half, NMH began to lift their performance at the wing mid position and penetrate the Deerfield defense with dangerous flank runs. After 25 minutes of play with a handful of near misses, NMH needed to find the back of the net before losing the wind. A Deerfield foul, just wide of the box, led to an Alex Redding '07 serve and a Yuri Moreira '07 header to the back of the net. Alex’s explosive speed and pace on the ball created the foul while Yuri’s knack for lifting his play at a critical moment continues to drive the Hoggers season. Read the full report.
