Athletes of the Week
april 28, 2008
David Rufful ’08
from boys varsity volleyball and Warren Dunton ’09 from varsity golf are the Athletes of the Week.

Outside hitter David Rufful led boys volleyball to two victories this week, over western Massachusetts powerhouse Minnechaug and Andover. David amassed 41 kills and 10 aces in the two matches, including what may be a school-record 27 kills (while hitting .585) in the latter match.

Warren Dunton was medalist (low score of the entire field) this Saturday for the second week in a row to help the team win against Wilbraham-Munson. On Wednesday he came in two strokes above the medalist (42) to help secure a win against Cushing, as well. His consistent and accurate play was crucial to the team this week.

april 21, 2008
Erin Cromack ’10 of girls track and Billy McNamara’08 of boys lacrosse are the Athletes of the Week.

Erin Cromack is new to the track team this year and is making a big impact. In the first meet against Suffield and Cushing, Erin won the high jump, 200m, and was the anchor to the 4x100m relay team. She also placed second in the long jump. All of her times and distances were very competitive for this early in the season. The team headed to Worcester on Wednesday and Erin had another big day. This time she won ALL of her events. She won the high jump, long jump, 200m and the 4x100m relay. Erin was in a fight for first in the long jump and produced a strong 15+ jump on the last jump to win the event. Congratulations, Erin!

PG attackman Billy McNamara of the boys varsity lacrosse team helped lead the team to a 2-0 performance this week by scoring eight goals against Cushing in the 19-6 win and another four in the team's 9-8 double-overtime win over Kent on Saturday. Billy leads the team in scoring.

Congratulations!

This week's athletes of the week are Maggie Fellows ’09 from Nordic skiing, Bettie Pratt ’11 from JV swimming, and Garrett McHugh ’11 from boys thirds basketball.

Maggie Fellows posted the best time on the ski course (15:26) during the home meet February 16, beating Andover’s skier by 22 seconds.

In the JV New England swimming competition at Eaglebrook School February 17, Bettie Pratt placed fifth out of 40 swimmers in the 50-meter breaststroke, and fifth out of 26 swimmers in the 50-meter butterfly. The pentathlon-style meet averaged times for five individual events, and Bettie placed seventh overall in the competitive contest against Eaglebrook, Choate, Deerfield, and Bement.

Garrett Mc Hugh contributed more than 20 points to NMH’s 47-43 win against Deerfield Academy February 13. Trailing by 17 points in the second half, the young Hoggers were able to turn the game around and come out victorious in overtime--Garrett played a huge game.

February 11 , 2008
The athlete of the week is Pete Coussa ’08 of boys varsity hockey.

In his last four starts in goal for the boys varsity hockey team, Pete Coussa has held the opposition to four goals against in each game.

Congratulations!

February 4 , 2008
The athletes of the week are Alicia MacNabb ’09 from varsity alpine skiing, Dennis Klimachewski ’09 from boys varsity swimming, and Olivia Wolpe ’11 from girls thirds basketball.

Consistently strong skiing by cocaptain Alicia MacNabb ’09 helped boost the girls varsity team to fourth place. Alicia is currently ranked No. 4 of the 48 girls in the varsity division of the Mount Institute Ski League. Alicia is the No. 1 racer on the girls varsity team and she has finished in the top five in all four league races thus far. She also competes in weekend USSA races, a higher level of competition featuring top racers from the region.

Boys varsity swimmer Dennis Klimachewski ’09 has racked up six individual first-place wins in the last three swimming meets.

Olivia Wolpe '11, cocaptain of the girls thirds basketball team, played an outstanding game this weekend: she showed leadership and did a great job rallying her teammates during the second half of the game. She contributed 4 points, 3 assists, and had 7 steals/turnovers for the day.

January 28, 2008
The Athletes of the Week are Jennine Vizcaino '10 from girls varsity basketball, Tim Liponis '08 from varsity Nordic skiing, and Greg Payton '10 from boys JV basketball.

Jennine Vizcaino played her best game of the year this weekend against Loomis Chafee School, finishing with 12 points and 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

Ski team cocaptain Tim Liponis battled with the elite members of the league during his meet. Finishing the 5k in 16:03, Tim scored a personal- and NMH-best 7th place.

Greg Payton earned 25 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 steals in a 93-86 double-overtime win over St. Thomas More, which beat us by three points earlier in the year.

January 22, 2008
Margot Milliken '09, from girls JV ice hockey, Daisy Letendre '09, from girls varsity swimming, and Marty Tarantino '08 from varsity wrestling are the Athletes of the Week.

Margot Milliken scored four goals and made four assists over two winning hockey games this weekend after being moved from defense to forward.

Against Worcester Daisy Letendre placed first four times and broke the 2:20.00 (2:18.72) mark for the 200 IM. That time would be top six for the 2007 New England Championship meet. Saturday, against Andover and Milton she took three more first-place wins.

Marty Tarantino had five wins on Saturday to run his career win record to 101, becoming the 6th member of the NMH Century Club!

Congratulations, athletes!

January 14, 2008
Mike Marra ’09 of boys varsity basketball is the athlete of the week.

Mike scored 30 points against Deerfield Academy and averaged 20 points per game for the week as he led NMH to a 3-0 record on the road this week.

Congratulations, Mike.

december 17, 2007
This week's Athletes of the Week are John Coutoumas '08 from varsity wresting, Filomania Falucci '09 from girls varsity hockey, and Kevin Pratt '10 from boys JV hockey.

  • John Coutoumas won the Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler award of the NMH Holiday Wresting Tournament.
  • In three games Filomania Falcucci made 108 saves at goal. During the first game in the Canterbury Tournament, NMH faced off against the Long Island Waves and beat them in a shoot out. Falcucci saved 24 shots and three of the four shots in the shoot out. The second game was played against Kents Hill School two hours later. The winner of that game would be playing in the finals the next day against Kingswood-Oxford. Kents Hill was just the better team and won 4-0 and outshot the hoggers 33-13. Falcucci had 29 saves. Falcucci was tested the next day during the bronze medal game against the host team. NMH ended up losing in shootouts but Falcucci only let in one of 51 shots and saved three of four shots in the shootout.
  • Kevin Pratt roofed a slapper to take the lead against Deerfield Academy. He displayed all-around solid defensive performance.

Congratulations!

december 10, 2007
This week's athlete of the week, for the second time this year, is Erika Loomer '08 from the NMH-Holiday-Tournament-winning girls varsity basketball team.

On Friday night, (NMH, 50; Kimball Union Academy, 30) Erika Loomer scored 22 points (6-8 from 3 point land!). On Saturday morning, (NMH, 29; Holderness, 26), Erika scored 16 points. On Saturday night, (NMH, 51; Vermont Academy, 29), Erika scored 14 points. Erika was also a member of the All-Tournament Team! Congratulations!

december 3, 2007
Ryan Roddy ’08 and Mo Baker ’10 are the Athletes of the Week!

Ryan Roddy ’08 won seven matches en route to tournament championships at Canterbury and the Eight School Tournament. Six of his wins were by pin and the other by a major decision.

Mo Baker ’10 earned a hat trick and one assist in a 10-1 girls JV ice hockey win at Williston Northampton School.

November 19, 2007
Simon McCormack '08 scored 14 points (7 of 10 field goals), seven rebounds, and six assists versus Champlain St. Lambert.

Here’s what the New England Recruiting Report online said about his performance:

"Simon McCormack continues to show why he is one of the most underestimated point guards in the class of 2008 as he was fantastic running the team. Not only did he play with great composure while handling the point guard spot for the first time, but he passed the ball extremely well finding cutters and three-point shooters with equal consistency. If that weren’t enough he also showed the ability to create his own shot with great proficiency, as he slashed his way to the rim, finished against contact with both hands, and pulled up for the mid-range jumper with consistency. McCormack finished with 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the floor, handed out 6 assists (would have been much higher if his team was making more shots) against only 2 turnovers, and grabbed 7 rebounds."

November 13, 2007
Emily Arena '08 from varsity field hockey is the Athlete of the Week.

Emily had two stellar performances on defense this week and helped the team win its two final games of the season. She had numerous interceptions and followed through with accurate passes to her midfield teammates. She had some key free hits to get the ball out of the circle and she was on hand to get her teammates out of trouble by positioning herself in reachable spots for them to make the pass to her. Emily had the ball in the waning minutes of the Williston game to secure our 2-1 lead.

Congratulations, Emily!

November 5, 2007
The Athletes of the week are girls cross-country runner Christy Cushing ’08 and JV football’s Kyle Matteson ’10.

Christina Cushing '08, girls cross-country co-captain, clocked a season-best time on the course for her last home race of her NMH career. She stayed close to the first place runner from Deerfield throughout the race, finishing second in 23:29, 11 seconds better than her effort three weeks ago. The race was held in cold and windy conditions, and Christy pushed through and gave it her all.

In a football game versus undefeated Deerfield, Kyle Matteson ’10 rushed 20 times for 107 yards and one touchdown. He caught one pass for five yards and had one punt return for 35 yards. On defense, Kyle added four solo tackles and numerous gang tackles.

Congratulations!

October 29, 2007
Scott Woodside ’09
of varsity football is Athlete of the Week.

NMH finished with a scoreless tie with Choate Rosemary Hall, as Scott made two interceptions, one sack, and five tackles. He also recovered one fumble and forced one fumble. His second interception ended the overtime for Choate.

Congratulations!

October 22, 2007
Girls varsity soccer player Emily Lefebve ’11 and John Lyons ’09 of JV football are the Athletes of the Week.

Emily Lefebvre began the season as a defender and played that position as a starter through the beginning of Wednesday's game against Wilbraham and Monson Academy. During that contest, she was moved up top to striker, where she instantly began creating scoring opportunities and unsettling the opposing defense. Then, just two days after having been moved to striker, she started at her new position against Andover on Friday night under the lights on their Parents' Weekend and scored her first-career NMH goal just seven minutes into the contest to give her 1-6-3 NMH side the 2-0 lead over the 6-3-0 Big Blue. Her goal, which came off of a well-placed shot out of the Andover keeper's hands after a nice run, proved to be the game-winner for NMH in the 2-1 upset win.

In the last three games, John Lyons made seven catches, scored three touchdowns, and completed nine tackles. His 54-yard touchdown against Cardigan Mountain School won the game for the Hoggers with 1:50 left in fourth quarter.

October 15, 2007
The Athletes of the Week are Erika Loomer ’08 and Haley Cree ’08.

Tri-captain Erika Loomer (girls varsity volleyball) played a terrific match in a loss versus Exeter. Her coach put her in serve-receive to thwart Exeter's serving. She led the team in kills (8) though she only had the chance to attack out-of-serve receive. And as usual, she set intelligently and well. Finally, she hit several service winners.

In the development category:
Haley Cree (girls JV soccer) was the best player on the field. She turned a lopsided game in NMH’s direction for about 20 minutes in the first half. She exhibited wonderful composure, decision making, and work rate.

October 9, 2007
Boys Regatta, perhaps wanting their own meal named after them at the Pres Box, came back to match their female counterparts’ Athlete of the Week performance from a week ago to be named this week's recipients.

The NMH boys regatta team took home the gold medals at the Head of the Connecticut Regatta Sunday, winning this traditional tune-up for the Head of the Charles for the first time. The winds were blustery and the water very choppy, but the NMH rowers were equal to the task, setting a strong tempo and matching their catches and accelerations very well as they made the final turn for the finish. Coxswain Rohan Ott '08 had a firm hand on the tiller and the mike, taking a good line on the inside as her crew pulled through several slower boats. Stroke man Scott Pelton-Stroud '10 set a great rate that the boys could use to their best advantage and oarsmen Spencer Hattendorf '08,  Julian Tryba '09, and Henry Hutcheson '08 provided the muscle to keep the rating smooth and powerful despite the waves. NMH crossed the line 15 seconds ahead of the Gunnery School, 19 seconds ahead of Choate, and atop a field of 12 crews from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Long Island.

In the development category, Morgan Wilkinson '11 of the girls 3rds soccer team gets the nod for her two goal performance vs. Deerfield Academy.

Morgan scored NMH’s only 2 goals against Deerfield to give the Hoggers a lead. Deerfield scored the first goal but NMH came back 3 minutes later and left striker Morgan scored twice. The first goal was a matter of being at the right place at the right time to finish off a direct kick. About 17 minutes later she scored again and the half time score was 2-1.

Congratulations!

Girls regatta team
as they win at the Tail of the Fish race in Saratoga, NY.

The NMH A Boat (varsity) rowing in the shell Atalanta; coxswain – Shelby DeLa Mora ’08, rowers – Meredith Storrs ’09, Renee Forcier ’08, Tessa Gobbo ’09, and Natalie Norton ’10.

The Atalanta was the first boat to start. The rowers had no one to catch and everyone to stay away from. The Saratoga boat that started next rowed strong and began to move in on NMH’s lead. Our rowers pulled ahead to open up a greater gap. For the remainder of the race the NMH A boat held its lead and finished with an excellent controlled sprint under the finish line bridge.

For winning the Tail of the Fish, the varsity team of DeLa Mora, Storrs, Forcier, Gobbo, and Norton are the Athletes of the Week.

Congratulations !

September 24, 2007
Field hockey goalie Molly DeLallo '09 made several awesome saves against Suffield to keep the game very tight. On Saturday she saved a penalty shot. It was a strong flick high to the right corner and she leaped to reach it in time and make the save to keep the score at 0-0 late in the second half.

Congratulations!

september 17, 2007
In the Varsity Boys Soccer team's first home game of the season, Peter Rosoff ’08, of Framingham, MA, scored three goals and an assist in the first half and held the shutout in goal in the second half, combining with Kellen Mobilia ’08, who tended net for the first half of the game.

Contests of the Week
april 28, 2008
The girls water polo team’s wins against Hotchkiss and Exeter make up the contest of the week.

Against Hotchkiss, the Hoggers dominated the first three quarters, outscoring Hotchkiss 10-5. Senior caption Zoe Hastings ’08 scored nine goals during this time period. Going into the forth quarter with the lead, Hotchkiss scored five unanswered goals to tie the score 10-10 with 2:26 remaining. Both teams had many turnovers during the final minutes with neither team finishing on offense. NMH gained possession and called a 20-second time out with 27 seconds remaining. Goalie Filomania Falcucci ’09 took the ball and made a half court pass to Hastings who was lights out at the 2-meter, scoring the winning goal with a sweep shot.

The Hoggers then took on Exeter, defeating the girls in red with great defense. Allowing only three goals in net, Falcucci was the player of the game with 13 saves on 21 shots with three scoring assists.

april 21, 2008
The boys varsity lacrosse double-overtime 9-8 win over the Kent School is the contest of the week.

The game saw four lead changes, including a Kent run in the final minute of regulation to tie the score and force overtime; however, the issue was settled with just under a minute left in the second four-minute overtime period when midfielder Chris Langton ’08 hit tri-captain Mick MacLaverty ’08 on the right wing for an 8-yard shot that deflected off of the Kent goalie and into the net for the 9-8 NMH win. Leading the way offensively, attackman Billy McNamara ’08followed up his 8-goal performance on Wednesday with four more goals against Kent, while junior attackman John Lyons ’09 scored twice and added two helpers. In net, NMH received another extremely strong performance by senior goalie Jon Weisburst ’08, who made 11 saves, including one in each overtime period. Game-ball honors, however, went to tri-captain Alex Junda ’08 for his leadership, intensity, and hard work; in the game, he contributed with a host of groundballs, several shots, and some terrific transitional and defensive play. With the win, NMH pulls up to 2-5 while Kent dips to 4-3.

april 14, 2008
The boys volleyball team's win against Andover is the contest of the week.

The Hoggers came from behind in their second game against Andover. David Rufful ’08 wowed the crowd with his powerful hitting, outside hitter Benson Chiu ’08 (who had four kills) picked up his defensive game, and NMH won both the serving and serve-receive battles. Games 3 and 4 saw more of the same, as setters Pete Rosoff ’08 and Kelvin Cheung ’08 are settling in and are learning who needs the ball where in order to be successful. Other highlights: Middle blocker Ryan Kim ’09 was efficient, juniors Ryan Peters ‘09 (four kills) and Josh Leslie ’09 made their varsity debuts and added depth to our front court play, and Davy Mok ’08 did a commendable job in his debut at libero.

Led by four champions and five additional place winners, the NMH wrestlers won the school's first New England Wrestling Championship. NMH's margin of victory was the largest in tournament history and was a fitting capstone to a season that saw the the team win the Class A League Tournament, three other tournaments, place 11th in the National Championships, and post a 21-1 season dual meet record. Fourty-four of the 50 New England wrestling schools were represented at the event. The team title helped to partially erase the frustrating second-place finishes in '98, '01, and '02 for retiring Coach Frank Millard.

Omar Bey '10 (112) was the first champ as he overwhelmed his opponent in the finals. His opponent was a two-time New England Champ, a two-time All American, and had pinned Omar in last year's NE finals and in the finals of an early season tournament this year. Naval-Academy-bound John Coutoumas '08 (125) was never challenged in the tournament and in the finals, beat the defending champion. Todd Patterson '08 (130) was the next champ, and his relentless attacking mode allowed him to wear down all of his opponents. TJ Strunk '08 capped off the champs with another dominating performance as he completely controlled his opponents when they were on their feet wrestling for a takedown. The Hoggers' four champions ties a the school record for number of champions set in 1997.

NMH's other finalist, All-American Ryan Ponte '11, lost to another All American who had dropped down from 112 to wrestle 103 at the Nationals and New Englands. Senior Ryan Roddy's semi final match was the rubber match this season between him and his opponent, and his opponent beat him in the closing seconds as he countered a great effort from Ryan with a little better one of his own. NMH's other third-place finisher was Marty Tarantino '08, who ran into a buzz saw in his semifinal match with the defending ISL league champion. Max Wright '09 continued his outstanding success story with a very strong fourth-place finish and Mike O'Brien '08 concluded his wrestling career with a very good performance placing a solid fifth after being seeded ninth.

NMH’s first-place win in the Class A wrestling tournament February 17 is the contest of the week.

As expected NMH easily won the 14 team Class A Tournament out-distancing host and runner-up Andover by 53 points. It was NMH's seventh Class A title and first since 2005. The Hoggers crowned five champs (Ryan Ponte ’11, Omar Bey ’10, John Coutoumas ’08, Todd Patterson ’08, and Tanner Strunk ’08). NMH last had five champions on its team in 1965. Only Exeter also has had five champs on a team. Martin Tarantino ’08, Ryan Roddy ’08, and Jon Wright ’09 placed second, Christopher Langton ’08 was third, Henry Cesari ’08 placed fourth, and Daniel Radich ’08 came in sixth to round out the NMH placers.

Omar Bey (112) became the 11th multiple champ in NMH history and first since 2000. He dominated his championship match early and then tried to coast which resulted in him needing a 3-point flurry (escape, then takedown) at the end of the match to win by 2. Ryan Ponte (103) dominated with two pins (:35 and :48) before tech falling his opponent in 4:00.

John Coutoumas (125) was never pressed with a pin and two 16-1 tech falls. Todd Patterson (130) also physically dominated all three of his opponents and was never really challenged. TJ Strunk (152) got taken down for the first time this year in the finals but stormed back to pin his opponent (who was a two-time league champ).

Marty Tarantino (135) lost a tough final (3-4) to his opponent from Loomis. This year the two have met three times, with Marty winning the middle match 4-1 and losing the others 2-3 and 3-4. Last year they also met in the finals of the A's with Marty winning 11-2. Chances are they will see each other again before the season is over to settle their 2-2 record. Ryan Roddy (171) also lost a tough one in the finals 9-10. It was Ryan's second one-point loss ( 8-9) in three matches to his Andover foe this year after having won their first match of the three 17-9. Max Wright (189) had three great wins before losing in the finals. This is the second time this year Max has lost in the finals of a tournament to his Andover opponent.

Chris Langton (215) capped a great tournament with a pin for third place. He's only been wrestling for 9 days! Henry Cesari (160) was outstanding also as he beat the defending league champion in the consolation round. DJ Radich moved up to 285 to help the team and wrestled well considering his large weight discrepancy in most matches.

Team Scores:
1. NMH, 241
2. Andover, 188
3  Loomis, 165.50

The NMH girls varsity basketball team’s 47-28 win against Cheshire Academy is the contest of the week.

NMH (10-5) faced off against Cheshire, which beat the Hoggers last year. This year, NMH was prepared. From the start NMH played with confidence, and with great defensive plays, let Cheshire know it was going to control the game. Jennine Vizcaino ’10, Erika Loomer ’08, Meg Denison ’10 and Tina Seretta ’10 helped open up a comfortable lead in the first half with great open shots and good passing. Meg Denison led NMH on defense with three of ten first-half steals. Tina Seretta and Jennine Vizcaino each had four offensive rebounds, as NMH had 15 offensive rebounds in the half. NMH led 23-13 at the half even though the team only shot 19.5 percent.

The second half was a little sloppy, with a few too many turnovers. Jess Woodworth ’08 led the defense in the second half with six steals, while Karissa Scano ’08 hit two long-range three-pointers, one with the shot clock running down, to keep the lead comfortable. As the lead climbed over 20, NMH went to the bench, rested some starters, and played different combinations of players to finish out the game. NMH shot better in the second half, just under 30 percent.

NMH hits it's toughest stretch of the season as the Hoggers open up a four-game home stand this Wednesday against a strong KUA team.

Highlights:
Harriet Booth ’09: 5 points, 2 steals, 6 rebounds
Tina Seretta: 9 points, 6 rebounds
Erika Loomer: 9 points, 5 rebounds
Jennine Vizcaino: 7 points, 3 steals, 9 rebounds
Meg Denison: 5 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds

Boys varsity basketball’s 82-78 defeat of Class A league rival New Hampton is the contest of the week.

NMH (14-6)  82
New Hampton (8-11)  78

Forslund gym was packed for this rematch against New Hampton. What made this game even more compelling was the fact that five McDonald's All-American Nominees were playing in this game including three from NMH. Seniors Simon McCormack, Ted Eby and Andrew VanNest all received their nominations earlier that day. The first half was well played by both teams as neither team found themselves ahead by more than 3 points for the first 20 minutes. The lead exchanged hands 8 times in the first half. Mike Marra led NMH with 13 first-half points.

NMH came out of the locker room inspired and with the intention of taking control of the game. NMH began to dictate the tempo on both sides of the floor as Simon McCormack found his teammates up the floor. The Dartmouth-bound duo of Josh Riddle and David Rufful hit back to back 3-pointers to give NMH its first lead of the second half at 44-43. NMH did not look back as the team stepped up the intensity on the defensive end. Over the next six minutes, NMH outscored 18-4 that included a Simon McCormack 3-point play and four free throws by freshman Joe Sharkey. NMH managed to answer New Hampton's comeback bid at each turn. Andrew VanNest had a strong second half grabbing 10 rebounds over the final 20 minutes. NMH picks up the big Class A win, 82-76.

NMH (13-5)   81
Hill School (13-2)   77

NMH took their game on the road this weekend, trouncing the Maple League’s first-place team, the Hill School in Pottstown, PA, to earn the contest of the week.

The Hoggers, coming off a 62-point second half the night before against the UPenn JV team, continued their spectacular play in the first half against Hill. Mike Marra '09 led the first-half scorers with 10 points.

Despite some close calls in the third period, NMH managed to keep the lead for the remainder of the game. NMH calmly hit 7-8 free throws to close out the game and escape Hill's comeback bid. Andrew Yanulis '08 led NMH with 12 second-half points. All 13 players gave a great effort during the game. NMH finishes the 2007-08 season with wins over Hill, Lawrenceville, and Blair for a 3-0 record against the Maple League with all wins coming on the road.

Next up...NMH looks to make it 10 straight as the Hoggers get back to NEPSAC league play. We travel to Exeter this Wednesday for a 4:30 tip-off.

Friday night: NMH 50 Kimball Union Academy 30
- Erika Loomer 22 points (6-8 from 3 point land!), Jennine Vizcaino 8 points, Tina Seretta 7 points,

NMH defeats Kimball Union with stifling defense, balanced offense with great shooting from the perimeter. NMH jumped out to an early lead, forcing turnovers, and running a balanced offense. Surviving a sluggish start to the second half, NMH rallied to extend the lead against a strong KUA team.

Saturday morning: NMH 29 Holderness 26
- Erika Loomer '08 16 points, Tina Seretta '10 7 points, Meg Denison '10 5 HUGE points!

NMH played a sloppy game Saturday morning against a big Holderness team. Not able to get inside NMH struggled to find any rhythm on offense, but let good defense keep them ahead all game. Jess Woodworth played her usual hard nosed defense, setting the tone for NMH. At a critical time with about 5 minutes to go, sophomore Megan Denison provided a huge spark for NMH, hitting a short jumper from the left side, and following an NMH steal, Meg then buried a three pointer to extend the lead. A big win - beating a team we should beat.

Saturday night: NMH 51 Vermont Academy 29
- Erika Loomer 14 points, Tina Seretta 12 points, Jennine Vizcaino '10 7 points

Against a young Vermont Academy squad, NMH came out strong and established a big lead. The entire NMH team saw significant action, running the offense well and playing strong team defense. Erika Loomer continued to shoot lights out from the perimeter. Tina Seretta and Carlyn Mehaffey Coy '08 controlled the paint and worked our offense through the post with Tina getting to the hoop for great low post points.

Erika Loomer - All Tournament Team - Congratulations!

NMH opened its wrestling season by living up to the preseason hype: the Hoggers dominated the 16-team Canterbury Tournament, taking first place. The Hoggers entered ten wrestlers as the team was missing four weight classes (two were taking the SAT, one was getting his first wrestling experience with the JV team, and we have no one in the 285 class). Of the ten wrestlers entered, nine reached the finals and six were champions. Not too shabby!

103 Ryan Ponte ’11: Champion
Ryan won three matches by pin in a total time of 66 seconds, demonstrating why he is the best 9th-grade prep school wrestler in New England.

125 John Coutoumas ’08: Champion
John won four matches by pin and totally dominated everyone as this future Naval Academy wrestler showed he will be a force on the national prep scene.

130 Todd Patterson ’08: Champion
Todd won three matches by pin, technical fall and pin. In the finals he thoroughly demolished the defending New England champion, building a 17-3 lead before pinning.

160 Jesse Posl-Rhinehart ’08: Champion
Jesse won four matches by pin, default, 12-4, and 25-18 in the finals. He had some moments of great wrestling and some that had the coaches scratching their heads.

171 Ryan Roddy ’08: Champion
Ryan won four matches by pin.

189 Max Wright ’09: Champion
Max won three matches pin, 11-2, 8-5 beating both the first and second seeds. He definitely was the feel-good story for NMH as he appears to be ready to be a force in his third year starting.

112 Omar Bey ’10: Second Place
Omar won by pin, won 7-6 after being behind 1-5, and in the finals was pinned in a rematch of last year's New England final where the same opponent had pinned him. Omar performed better this time but the results were the same as last year.

135 Marty Tarantino ’08: Second Place
Marty won by pin twice, and then was upset in the finals 3-2 on a takedown in the last 30 seconds of the match.

119 David Mah ’10 got his first taste of varsity competition losing by pin, winning by pin and then losing by pin.

Here are the top-four teams:
1. NMH, 215.50
2. Loomis Chafee School, 151
3. Brunswick School, 146
4. Trinity Pawling School, 109

The contest of the week is the boys varsity soccer team’s win over Deerfield Academy to capture the Dunbar Cup.

Deerfield, 1 (7-3-6)
NMH, 3 (10-2-3)

Before a standing-room-only crowd at the Peller Family Field, NMH defeated Deerfield to win the coveted Dunbar Cup.With a pair of 1-0 road wins over Andover and Exeter, NMH ran the table to secure the cup with an impressive 3-1 win over the Big Green.

NMH jumped out to the early lead when Kade Krichko ’08 hit a fatal chip over the top to Spencer Lefebvre ’10, who split two defenders to drive a one-time volley to the upper right corner.Throughout the first 20 minutes of the match, NMH’s midfield of Krichko, Eddie Senibaldi ’08, Ryan Dintaman ’08, Spencer Russell ’08 and Weston Halkyard ’08 dominated play while Randy Taylor ’08 and Colin Murphy ’09 kept Deerfield pinned in with dangerous runs and combination play.As NMH began to lose its commitment to moving the ball with fewer touches, Deerfield was able to get back some of the game.Eventually, Deerfield was able to tie when miscommunication between our goalie and backs left a secondary ball free in our box and an opportunistic goal for the Big Green. By the end of the first half, NMH had significantly more quality opportunities to score, getting behind their opponents defense several times, but walked off the field with a frustrating 1-1 draw.

With the Dunbar Cup on the line and a crucial WNEPSAA contest with post-season implications at stake, NMH came out in the second half and played one of its most impressive halves of the season. With Peter Rosoff ’08 playing in the field and Murphy back at the center of the pitch with Krichko, the offense and overall team possession was something any soccer fan would have appreciated. It all started in the back where Otis Pitney ’08, Stratos Saropoulos ’08, Trever Hendry ’08 and Joe Holmes ’08 locked down the Deerfield attack.Hendry, in particular, did an outstanding job defending Deerfield’s top forward while Saropoulos, Pitney, and Holmes built a dynamic attack through the midfield. Throughout the second half NMH moved the ball with less touches and attacked both flanks aggressively. NMH strung together ten to 12 pass sequences that resulted in quality scoring opportunities. After several near misses Colin Murphy set up Pete Rosoff with a pass just inside the 18 and Rosoff tucked it home for the 2-1 lead.

With the defense limiting the Big Greens scoring opportunities, NMH found the back of the net one more time as Rosoff set-up Randy Taylor who blasted a shot by Deerfield’s keeper for the commanding two goal lead.

With the 3-1 win over Deerfield, NMH improved its record to 10-2-3. Over the last eight games the team is 7-0-1 and has outscored its opponents 22-4. Every member of the team contributed to the victory as NMH’s depth kept the Big Green on the defensive and wore them down in the second half. Please come out to support the Hoggers as they play their last regular season match against Williston this Saturday at 2 pm.

NMH’s varsity football win against Cushing Academy is the contest of the week.

NMH, 19 (1-5-1)
Cushing, 13 (0-7)

NMH's Mick MacLaverty ’08 started things off for NMH with an 88-yard touchdown pass to Greg Payton ’10. NMH quarterback Scott Woodside ’09 passed to receiver Matt Brown ’10 for the two-point try. In the second quarter, NMH running back Tanner Strunk ’08 scored on a 28-yard run, then Strunk ran the try in for two points. NMH lead 16-13 at the half.

Both teams played great defense in the second half, with the only score a 27-yard field goal by Strunk.

The Hoggers travel to Avon for their final game of the ’07 season next Saturday against a very strong Avon Old Farms team.

October 29, 2007
NMH's varsity football team and Choate Rosemary Hall played to a 0-0 tie on Saturday at home on Thorndike Field.

NMH, 0 (0-5-1)
Choate, 0 (3-2-1)

At the end of regulation time both teams were scoreless, so each team received one possession from the 25 yard line in overtime. Neither team scored, as both teams threw an interception to end their single OT possession.

NMH's Scott Woodside ’09 had two interceptions and caused a fumble. The NMH defense played tough against a big and strong Choate offense.

Join us as NMH plays at home on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 pm.

The contest of the week saw the girls varsity soccer team beat Phillips Andover Academy.

NMH 2, Andover 1

The NMH girls' soccer team headed west on Friday for a night game under the lights in Andover's stadium for their Parents' Weekend. The Andover squad was fast and athletic, and they attacked well from the back and maintained shape with incredible composure. As a result, the Big Blue were able to maintain consistent offensive pressure for the vast majority of the 80-minute game and to out-shoot NMH 24-9. Nevertheless, NMH spirit was in abundance, despite the rain, and the visiting NMH team burst out to a 2-0 lead just 7 minutes into the game thanks to first-ever career goals by senior defender Kyle Cerutti ’08 and freshman striker Emily Lefebvre ’11. NMH then held the potent Andover offense scoreless until the final minute of play, when a slippery ball found its way onto the foot of an Andover midfielder and into the net with 28 seconds left to play, but it was too little, too late for the hosts, as NMH emerged with the 2-1 victory. In net, NMH keeper Jess Woodworth ’08 contributed a fantastic performance, picking up 12 saves in net. With the win, NMH improves to 2-6-3, while Andover drops to 6-4-0.

NMH came out flying to open the game after a boisterous (and song-filled) warm-up. The rain began shortly after NMH's arrival at the stadium, but it would do little to affect NMH's energy. Just over three minutes into the game, Lefebvre caught up with a through-ball before it went out-of-bounds and knocked it off a nearby Andover defender to win a corner kick. On the ensuing Joy Fernandes ’10 corner, the ball knocked about before coming to rest in front of Cerutti, who knocked it into the upper left-hand corner of the net, just out of reach of the hands of the diving Andover keeper for the 1-0 NMH lead just 4:05 into the game. Then, after Andover pushed the ball deep into the NMH zone, junior defender Austin Ebbott ’09 and sophomore midfielder Elliot Soper ’10 combined to stop the Andover attack and to send a ball up to Fernandes at the midfield; with some space, Fernandes turned, beat her defender, and sent a ball through the Andover defense, and Lefebvre battled to beat her Big Blue defender to the ball inside the 18 and then to snap off a shot into the far reaches of the net for the 2-0 lead, just three minutes after the first goal. It would be a disservice to the NMH defense to fast-forward to the end of the game... for the rest of the first half and the majority of the second, the group of Kia Jelley ’10, Mackenzie Collins ’11, Filomania Falcucci ’09, quad-captain Darah Thomas ’08, and Cerutti frustrated Andover time and time again with some outstanding individual contributions, but, more regularly, with consistent teamwork. When Andover did find space to attack, Woodworth was on her game. Andover's best chance in the first half came in the closing moment when a bouncing ball skipped off the shin of an NMH defender and led to a 4-on-1; however, Jelley managed to stall the play long enough for support to come, but an Andover player still managed to get the shot off. Luckily, the ball sailed high over the crossbar. With that chance quelled, the first half ended with NMH on top 2-0. The same persistent and consistent offensive onslaught ensued throughout the entire second half. NMH responded with some tactical adjustments, allowing Geneva Jonathan ’11 and quad-captain Heather Livingston ’09 to get involved with the midfield defense. As the game wore on, strikers Liz Savas ’10 and Kristan Dziurzynski ’10 provided a fresh spark up-top in relief of Fernandes and Lefebvre. Some long clearing balls nearly sprang each of these strikers on breakaways, but with the wind to their backs, the ball rolled regularly out of reach. Finally, late in the game, a high shot eluded Woodworth, and the rebound popped out to an Andover midfielder, who put a quick shot in the net with 28 seconds left to play. However, NMH regrouped and pounded two consecutive balls deep into the Andover zone to run out the clock and earn the victory.

For not only notching her first career goal at NMH, but also for successfully marking a very dangerous Andover striker for the entire game, Cerutti earned game-ball honors.

After taking the weekend off, NMH will return to action with a challenging week with an away game at Taft on Wednesday before hosting Choate on Saturday afternoon.

Boys varsity soccer
defeats Exeter 2-0.

NMH (4-2-2)  1          0          1
Exeter (3-6)     0          0          0

NMH won a crucial match on the road as they defeated a young and well coached Exeter team. From the opening whistle NMH, gained possession of the game with quick ball movement and dangerous combination play though the attacking third. Colin Murphy ’09 and Peter Rososff ’08 generated several quality chances but could not put the ball past the Exeter keeper. Midway through the half, Spencer Lefebvre ’10 and Jerry Alceus ’08 came off the bench and provided some lightning up top as they put pressure on the back four of Exeter. NMH finally got on the board when improved spacing out wide opened a channel for a checking forward. NMH was able to switch fields and create several chances in the box. Spencer Russell ’08, cutting in from the left, cracked a shot that was deflected to center mid Kade Krichko ’08, who calmly drilled a shot to the lower corner for the 1-0 lead. NMH, with the wind, continued to create chances but Exeter’s goalie was up for the challenge.

At halftime Exeter’s coaching staff made some tactical and some attitudinal adjustments and Exeter came out and played a much more spirited half. The game went back and forth with NMH unable to put away a scrapping Exeter side despite out shooting the hosts by a 17-3 margin. Ryan Dintaman ’08, Spencer Lefebrve, Alex Junda ’08, Weston Halkyard ’08, Jerry Alceus, Tanner Halkyard ’08, and Trevor Hendry ’08 provided NMH with excellent energy and depth. Otis Pitney ’08 and Stratos Saropoulos ’08 anchored the defense while Kellen Mobilia ’08 and Peter Rososff combined for the shutout in goal. NMH’s strength continues to be there midfield play led by Krichko, Randy Taylor ’08, Dintaman, Eddie Senibaldi ’08, and Russell. This was a great team effort as every player on the active roster gave valuable minutes to the team. NMH looks forward to playing the undefeated, high flying Kimball Union Academy team.

Girls varsity volleyball: NMH 3, Saint Paul's 0 (30-18, 30-24, 30-28)

NMH found the winning formula at their game this weekend: Have half the team take the SATs, take a long bus ride, and play in New Hampshire (see "Fun Facts", below). The Hoggers were losing game one 10-12 when we rode Kayci Wickline ’08's hot serving for 10 consecutive points and a 20-12 lead which they never relinquished. In game two, they were down 11-15, caught up to even the score at 19, then raced to victory with six consecutive points, again behind Kayci's serving. In game three, they decided to do things differently: they jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead, behind 8 straight service points from Erika Loomer ’08. At 25-17, Saint Paul's mounted a comeback to pull within one at 24-25. But the Hoggers pushed in front to 29-25 when Saint Paul's staved off three match points to close within 28-29. NMH then closed them out for its second win of the season.

Fun Facts about girls varsity volleyball:
1. Undefeated (2-0) in New Hampshire.
2. Undefeated when taking a COACH bus.
3. A winning record (2-1) on the road.

The team puts all three of these streaks on the line when it takes a coach bus to Exeter, NH, next Saturday, October 13.

Team record (2-6).

Girls varsity field hockey:
NMH 3, New Hampton 0

The Hoggers continued their wining streak with a decisive win over New Hampton. The game seemed even in the first half, as NMH took a while to warm up. Toward the middle of the second half, we were clearly back in control and dominated the midfield. We had some trouble taking good shots on goal. However, with seven minutes left in the first half Tara Opalinski ’09 scored. We played well the rest of the first half and were able to get to half time with a 1 to 0 lead. Goalie Molly DeLallo ’09 had an incredible save early in the game after New Hampton had a penalty corner. She slid form the right side of the goal to the left corner and deflected a shot wide to the left side. If New Hampton had scored this early in the game, it may have swayed the momentum away from the Hoggers.

In the second half, it was all NMH. We made good passes and New Hampton only penetrated past the 25 yard line once (here Harriet Booth ’09 was on hand to make a great defensive play). We scored again 14 minutes into the second half. Mel Bete ’09 tucked one in off a pass from Erin Cromack ’10. Nine minutes later, Carlyn Mehaffey-Coy ’08 (having a stellar game) finally put a well placed flick in the net off a pass from Rachel Koh ’08. Emily Arena ’08 had a great game and Megan Dennison ’10 came off the bench into the game and made several key plays to thwart any forward movement by New Hampton.

Varisty boys soccer versus Winchendon (2-1)
NMH traveled to face a talented and explosive Winchendon squad. From the opening kick-off it was clear that this game was going to be played with pace, and would be very physical. Winchendon carried the first 15 minutes of play as NMH struggled to adapt to quick the surface (hard fairways on a Friday for you golfers) and highly skilled Winchendon central players. For Winchendon, quick give and goes-up-the-middle and dynamic dribbling were on display while NMH looked to counter with defensive shape, possession, and assertive flank play. Throughout the first half, hard fouls during midfield transitions, often after NMH played the ball, disrupted the NMH attack and occasionally directed our energy away from our collective purpose. However, NMH responded first when Tanner Halkyard '08 redirected a corner kick to Kade Krichko '08 (“man of the match” for his leadership/sportsmanship and two-way commitment to his team), who volleyed the ball home at the six for a 1-0 lead. After pinging the crossbar with a laser shot earlier in the match, Winchendon countered when a partially screened Kellen Mobilia '08 was handcuffed by a low Winchendon shot through traffic. Throughout the first half Mobilia made several dynamic saves, pounced on potential rebounds, and made great reads off of his line to shorten the field to buy NMH critical time to solve the challenges of this match.

In the second half the team made a more assertive commitment to maintain focus and composure when fouled and to move the ball with fewer touches. Winchendon came out hard in the first 10 minutes, but NMH’s shape, particularly at central midfield, and substitutions were starting to wear down their opponents. At midfield Krichko and Colin Murphy '09 gained control with assertive defensive communication and careful spacing, thus limiting Winchendon’s dangerous counter-attack. Fifteen minutes into the second half Eddie Senibaldi '08 hit a perfect bending ball from a restart 40 yards out, and Peter Rosoff '08 slipped between two defenders and headed the ball home for the Hoggers. With the 2-1 lead, NMH did a decent job attacking the corners and managing their risks at midfield and in the back. Up top, Spencer Lefebvre '10, Stratos Saropoulos '08 and Rosoff maintained a very dangerous attack throughout the remainder of the match.

Defensively, Otis Pitney '08, Trevor Hendry '08, and Joe Holmes '08 did a great job defending against Winchendon’s counter-attacks while building our attack with careful outlets to checking players. Ryan Dintaman '08, Tanner Halkyard, and Spencer Russell '08 worked hard making runs up and down the flanks and provided excellent support and balance for the Hogger defense. This was a very challenging match. The Hoggers’ ability to play with composure and utilize their depth even when illness, weddings, and injuries shortened the bench were all significant pieces to solving the puzzle.

The team looks forward to our next match on the road at Salisbury this Wednesday at 3:30 pm. Many thanks to the NMH parents and friends who were able to support the Hoggers with positive energy and kept the players focused on the game; we were all proud of the way the players handled themselves in a challenging and competitive environment.

Varisty boys soccer versus Vermont Academy (6-1)

‘NMH opened the season with an impressive 6-0 win at home. On the opening kick-off NMH strung together 16 passes before generating an excellent chance in the Vermont box. A combination of flank speed and impressive possession play in the middle made the Hogger attack particularly dangerous. Several minutes into the game Peter Rosoff ’08 headed home a perfect feed from left back Joe Holmes ’08. Holmes set up the goal by making an overlapping run and received a nifty heel pass from Eddie Senibaldi ’08 on the flank before serving the ball to Rosoff. Five minutes later Randy Taylo ’08 found Rosoff again in the box and he calmly slotted the ball “side netting.” The third goal, another Rosoff affair, was set up by a Spencer Russell ’08 feed from the right flank. Rosoff pulled the ball back away from several VA defenders, shielded and then pushed the ball by the scramble of VA players into the back of the net. Rosoff, having scored a hat trick in less than 20 total minutes of play, set up NMH’s fourth goal when he fed a perfectly timed run by Stratos Saropoulos ’08 who received the ball on full stride at the midfield line and stepped around the sliding keeper, and slotted the ball home for NMH’s fourth goal. With minutes to go in the first half Sawyer Connelly ’08 volleyed home a combination of passes from Tighe Burnham ’09 and Senibaldi for the fifth goal of the half. Throughout the first half, the central midfield play of Colin Murphy ’09, Kade Krichard ’08 and Taylor provided NMH with a dynamic and versatile attack.

NMH received outstanding play in the second half from Tanner Halkyard ’08 and Weston Halklyard ’08, Ryan Dintaman ’08 and Connelly at midfield and Jerry Alcius ’08 and Spencer Lefebvre ’10 up top as NMH finished with 39 shots and a 6-0 win. Great movement away from the ball, unselfish play, and a willingness to address constructive tactical feedback in preparation for the contest were the highlights of the day for the Hoggers. Defensively, Otis Pitney ’08, Trevor Hendry ’08, Alex Junda ’08, Eli Stiefel ’08 and Holmes limited VA to two shots, none in the first 45 minutes. Despite being down 5-0 to NMH, VA played with a lot of heart in the second half, something that will serve them well in their Lakes Region league play. NMH looks forward to the next contest at Winchendon, Saturday 2 pm. Please drive down Route 2 and join the Hoggers for their next match!
