As a fitting end to a joyful Winter Carnival day, there will be a Lunar New Year feast at Alumni Hall tonight, February 9. Students and faculty from the countries that would be observing the Lunar New Year are welcome to sit together in the south end of Alumni where special decorations and tables will be set up to help you celebrate. We will end the meal with sparklers ignited outside.
A few interesting facts:
*Lunar New Year will be celebrated by millions of people around the world.
*Citizens of China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Tibet and Mongolia and people of this heritage living elsewhere around the world, will all be celebrating the New Year which actually will happen on February 14th this year.
*This is the year of the Tiger. People born in 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986 and 1998 are all Tigers! Tigers are said to be courageous, strong and mysterious.
*Chinese people will give and receive "red pockets", red envelopes in which family members place chocolate or money.
*This is THE biggest holiday in the countries listed above. If you were in one of the big cities in one of these countries, you would see, on Sunday night, one of the biggest fireworks celebrations in the world.
