At Northfield Mount Hermon, dance is about a lot more than pliés and pirouettes. For us, dance is an academic discipline, an important mode of communication, and an athletic endeavor. And of course, it’s a beautiful and challenging craft.
Our
dance courses will teach you about the history of movement as an art form. You’ll learn about influential choreographers and the science of how your body works. We have classes in ballet, jazz, tap, and modern dance; we also offer private lessons. There are two selective dance companies where students audition for a spot. The companies learn advanced techniques and perform at events throughout the year. And of course you can create your own opportunities, as one student did recently when he, with the help of the dance faculty, started a hip-hop troupe here at NMH.
All courses fulfill the PE requirement for the term in which you take the dance course. If you are a member of one of the auditioned companies, your participation will fulfill your athletic requirement for a team sport.
At NMH, we think of dance as a language that requires attention from the physical, emotional, and spiritual self. It’s exercise. It’s enlightenment. It’s a great way to tell your story.
