Anual Fund Spring Letter
April 23, 2008Dear Northfield ’62 Classmates,
This is our first class letter since December. At our reunion committee meeting that month, we talked with five dedicated staff members from the advancement office. Our first decision was to personally contact as many of you as possible before writing about fundraising specifics.
This calling program is more than two thirds accomplished. We’ve confirmed contact information (e.g., new e-mail addresses, phone numbers), learned that a number of us have moved or retired, and answered questions about NMH today and the whereabouts of long-lost friends. Since many classmates live abroad or in the western US, not all have had an opportunity to visit the consolidated campus. Classmates who have visited are impressed by what the school has accomplished in recent years, so much so that we are gung ho about planning for our 2012 reunion, which includes a five-year commitment to fundraising.
Within the next year we hope to have the first of several topically based mini-reunions. In the meantime, the primary activity is our class chair Cindy Kidder’s planned summer trip across the country, during which she’ll interweave visits and gatherings with N’62 alumnae with family and theater commitments. We wish her very safe travels.
Today we write to thank those who have already given to NMH this year and to encourage others to donate by June 30. Because we surprised ourselves and exceeded our modest Annual Fund goal for the 45th reunion (we had much room for improvement and Roz Rockwell Gianutsos’ personal note helped!), we have a bigger goal this year, which is tallied two ways: percentage of donors in the class and the total amount.
We invite you to join classmates in making an Annual Fund donation now and a generous pledge to cover the following four years, as a way of enabling NMH to provide the exceptional experience that shaped each of our lives, and to maintain a high level of scholarship awards. All will be credited to the five-year goal for our 50th reunion. Two thirds of us benefited directly from scholarships, so it’s only appropriate that we each make a priority of giving back for current and future students.
Once you have made a commitment to the Annual Fund, you may wish to consider other options, such as the Class of 1962 Scholarship Fund, the Raymond Concert Hall in the wonderful Rhodes Center for the Arts, and/or planned gifts. We encourage you to consult the website at www.nmhschool.org to learn more about options as well as school news and events.
At Sacred Concert on Mother’s Day, at least four ’62 alumnae will sing in the alum choir, under the excellent leadership of Director of Choral Music Sheila Heffernon, again in the Auditorium. The theme is peace and will include several movements from Haydn’s Mass in the Time of War and a new work by a contemporary British composer.
Because most of us have such fond memories of our Northfield campus, I would like to share with you part of a message to me from Sheila this winter:
I was on the Northfield campus last Friday, getting some of my choral music (the library is still housed there) and felt such longing. My office was there for 25 years, and I looked out my window up the hill to Round Top. I do so miss it. Then I returned to this campus, walked into the dining hall, and realized that I now know almost all our students in any given year, that I see them every day, and that we are able to keep our program flourishing in ways that we could not before, when we were fractured. Our youngest child is at a different school (he is graduating this year) than his brother and sister, and in most ways, I believe it is a stronger one. It is like the school you went to in the early ’60s, but coed.
I—aka Kate—have my own anecdote, from Friday evening on vespers weekend, when I accompanied a prospective applicant’s mother to the gym to watch the NMH girls basketball team play. They were terrific, but equally interesting was watching the head of school several rows in front, who recognized me and came over to greet us. The applicant herself was happily on her own with a group of current students. Conclusion: this school is a close community.
Returning to Northfield ’62, I heartily thank class committee members who have participated this year, including not only Cindy and our class secretaries Lee and Mila, but also Enid Freund Hayflick, who recently joined the gifts committee, and a large team of callers: Betty Allman Mitcheltree, Blanche Houseknecht, Mary-Jean West Kledzik, Johanna Marschner Gwinn, Martha Munford Hill, and Judy Russell DeMailly. Another caller, Cynthia Maurer Barnard and Michael Menne will be chairing the 50th-reunion book committee. Others will become involved in the fall as we increase our activity, so please do not hesitate to join in!
The school and your class reunion volunteers greatly appreciate all that you do. We thank you heartily.
With very best wishes,
