Northfield Class of `62 December Letter

Dear Classmate:

Today feels like a real beginning: I’m sitting with classmates who’ve come together to launch the five-year process of preparing for our (gasp!) 50th reunion from Northfield. The atmosphere is humming with energy and enthusiasm, as well as the many good stories and well-worn jokes that characterize any gathering of people whose connections go way back. While the business of the weekend is to look forward to 2012, it isn’t hard to revisit the past, sitting here in Moore Cottage and looking out over the campus.

During the next five years, you’ll be receiving reminders from us and from the school about the 50th reunion class gift; if you’ve been back for reunion, you will be familiar with the big checks and standing ovations for outstanding class gifts at Alumni Convocation on Saturday morning of the weekend.  Betty Mitcheltree, Kate Chipman, and Johanna Marschner Gwinn have done a terrific job for Northfield ’62 in the past. It’s daunting to feel that now it is our turn for the big push, but nevertheless a challenge that seems doable since the final figure is one that takes into account class giving of all kinds over these five years. Estate planning and capital gifts traditionally make up approximately 50 percent of total 50th reunion class gifts. You’ll be hearing more about this from the school.

 

One thought for our class gift is to endow a scholarship. This feels to me like a very solid way of maintaining a living relationship to what we ourselves received from the school – education, values, and an appreciation for and commitment to excellence. As a parent and faculty member, I experienced first hand not the same school outwardly, perhaps, but inwardly a core of dedication to doing what it takes to realize the highest aspirations of the entire community. This effort deserves our unreserved support starting right now with a gift to this year’s NMH Annual Fund!

This weekend we will put together a gift committee to work with the school’s advancement office over the next five years. You will hear from them from time to time; please let us know how you would like to help! In the meantime, send your ideas and thoughts for our class gift and ways to reconnect with each other and with the school. As Red Green famously says, “We’re all in this together!”
