Class of 1959 50th Reunion

March 20, 2007

Dear Classmate,

How did this happen?  Our 50th reunion, about two years away, is fast approaching. At our 45th, looking ahead to 2009, we set as a goal 50/50 – that is, for the 50th reunion, at least 50% attendance, and at least 50% participation in the class’ reunion gift. These would be records. Now is the time to think seriously about these things.

The 50th is a milestone in our lives. Different years may well have different significance for different people, but we all pause for this one. We reflect; we share; we think. We talk about things that have gone well for us and not so well. We think about good fortune and bad. We honor classmates who have died too young. We talk about missed opportunities and possibilities still in front of us.

But mainly we celebrate and connect and re-connect. We strengthen old friendships and make new ones. We value each other, no matter what. And we party and we have fun. All of our reunions have been this way – each better than the last. If you’ve not been back, you have missed something special and important. Mark June 4 – 7 of 2009 (tentative) in your calendars now and plan to attend. Your planning committee classmates, led by Emily Dunlap and Peter Welsh, have done great work in the past and promise even better work this time!

If you miss this one, you will also miss the new Northfield Mount Hermon. The new one is in fundamental ways the old one –  sending wave after wave of bright kids out to make the world a better place; still a place where spirit and brain both matter; still a place of opportunity; still a place of extraordinary teaching. The one-campus consolidation and the selection of the Hermon campus were excruciatingly difficult and controversial decisions, but the change has gone well. The sense of community and intimacy across classes; the ready availability of faculty and staff for all; the proximity of all resources – the hoped for results of the change have come true and the feeling is palpable. The School and its ideals are intact.

The School is more than buildings and spaces, but you will see major facilities change and learn about projects in the works. There are two new cottages on cottage row and a new arts center is in progress. An admissions house and enhanced athletic facilities are on the drawing board. But all of this costs money.

The School depends on generous alumni for annual support, for sustaining progress out into the future, and for these and other capital projects. At the 45th, we did set an ambitious goal for a 50th reunion class gift: to raise $2,000,000 over the five year period between the 45th and the 50th.   This can be done. We have made good progress – about 50% of goal in cash and pledges thus far - but we’ll need everyone to dig deep in the next two years. Any and all gifts made between 2004 and 2009 count. Your money can go wherever you direct it. A classmate will call you in the next few months to encourage you to contribute to the reunion fund. The reunion isn’t about money. But if you come back, you will see that your contribution is being well spent and that stewardship of financial resources is extraordinary. The School has a unique and very bright future, especially with your help.

I sincerely hope that you will contribute to our class gift and I sincerely hope that you will return for the 50th. All of your classmates will be delighted to see you and to share and commiserate and laugh about our respective fifty years of life experiences since graduation.

Looking forward to seeing you in 2009.

Sincerely,

A. Clark Peters

P.S. We are considering establishing a perpetual scholarship named for the great class of 1959. In addition to being very much welcomed by the School such a fund would, in a way, be a fitting legacy for us – indeed a small way to become remembered forever.
