Northfield Class of '58
November 20, 2007Dear ’58 Classmate,
If it’s fall, it’s time to hear from me about Northfield Mount Hermon! But this year, it’s also time to invite you to come back for a very special chance to see old friends and our new school campus for yourself. As you know by now, our 50th Reunion is June 5–8, 2008. Your reunion committee has had many meetings by phone, on campus, and during personal visits. We are confident you will thoroughly enjoy returning. (Sneak preview: How about joining a Pirates of Penzance sing-a-long with at least part of the original cast and accompanied by the school’s beloved choral director Sheila Heffernon? Come Thursday, June 5!)
This year, ten intrepid callers (be gentle, they are your friends) have most graciously agreed to join me in contacting you to talk about giving back to our school. You’ll be talking to a classmate from your dorm in most cases. I hope you’ll enjoy the call—especially the catching-up part.
This year is our most significant opportunity to thank Northfield, now Northfield Mount Hermon, for all she has given us. The 50th reunion gift is a tangible way to do so. You should know that every penny donated or pledged from our 45th until our 50th reunion will count in our class gift total. To date, that figure is $1,758,493. Over $1,400,000 of that is from planned giving—a separate letter will give details of how that can be done. Steve and I are working out the details of our own commitment in that manner. Please remember that the NMH Annual Fund is always top priority for the school for scholarships, faculty salaries, and maintenance. This year, we hope you’ll considering doubling last year’s gift. How about aiming for $1,958? A pledge can be made and paid in installments—by June 30. Credit cards can also be used. See the school’s website for more information (www.nmhschool.org/support/ways.php).
Our special class gift details are being worked out, but the gist is a very appealing project: moving the carillon from Sage Chapel over to the new Rhodes Center for the Arts and installing it in the tower there. This will cost $500,000—a big commitment. Your reunion committee members who were present at last month’s meeting on campus have pledged $96,000 to make this very symbolic element of Northfield an important part of the new unified campus. If the class of 1958 can raise at least half the amount of this project ($250,000), we will have the opportunity to name the tower and carillon! Please consider joining us in that effort. This can be done via a pledge extending over five years, or through certain planned gifts.
Another way to give back is to support the Class of 1958 Memorial Scholarship. We have approximately $85,000 given and pledged to date. A fully endowed scholarship is $800,000, but we can extend partial help to a deserving student before we get to that figure. What better way to give back than to directly support an NMH student today. Any gift you make to NMH will count toward our grand total.
As you complete your questionnaire (only a few of you have sent them in so far), please remember again how much your time at Northfield changed your life. Go to the school website at www.nmhschool.org and see the exciting and inspiring things going on there—check out the Darfur initiative, for example—and plan how to give as much as you can to honor our school in this, our 50th reunion year. DO send in your questionnaire so you can be part of the most wonderful 50th reunion yearbook ever—if not now, when will the chance come again? And please, DO all you can to come to reunion in June. And finally, DO consider carefully how you can join in ringing that class bell by giving the strongest support ever to our school. Your dormmate will be calling. As always, thank you.
Your committee and I look forward to seeing you in June, to reading about you in our yearbook, and to hearing the announcement of a record-breaking class gift total at Reunion 2008!
