Mount Hermon Class of '58

November 13, 2007

Dear 1958 Classmate,

This is an exciting time for our class, a once-in-a-lifetime event, our 50th Reunion at Northfield Mount Hermon. Plans have been underway for over a year to make the weekend of June 5–8, 2008 a truly rewarding and memorable experience. You have already received preliminary information from our reunion and the yearbook committees outlining proposed events and encouraging your participation in the yearbook project.

In addition to these activities, the reunion gift committee has established its objectives for the final year before this milestone event. The purpose of this letter is to outline these fundraising goals and to ask you for an enthusiastic response when class representatives contact you within the next few weeks.

The most important contribution you can make to the financial health of NMH is to the NMH Annual Fund. Contributions from this annual appeal underwrite major portions of the school’s yearly operating budget, thus providing fundamental and immediate support to the school’s greatest needs.

Planning for this special year’s annual fund drive has centered on three very specific objectives: to obtain at least 70 percent class participation and at least $80,000 in total annual fund contributions; to achieve a level of total contributions that will strongly reflect our collective appreciation of what the NMH experience has meant to us during our most productive years; and to achieve a level of total giving that supports the high standard set for 50th reunion classes.

Accordingly, we hope that when a classmate calls you will consider a generously higher gift than in the past. If you have not been a regular contributor, we hope that you will participate with the rest of your class during this special anniversary year.

Because the 50th reunion is a once-in-a-lifetime event, we hope you'll also consider it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show your appreciation of NMH through an additional gift to the Class of 1958 Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Class of 1958 reunion gift committee has established an endowed scholarship in memory of our classmates who are no longer with us. Each year beginning next fall, the NMH director of financial aid will name a scholarship recipient. The student will correspond with us so we can experience a bit of NMH today.

The decision to create a scholarship fund is driven by a simple but profoundly important philosophical commitment: we can help make the NMH experience available to more qualified young people whose families may not be able to afford the school’s tuition. We are sure you can fully appreciate that the cost of this precious experience has increased exponentially since we attended. As you consider your response to this special appeal for both the NMH Annual Fund and the Class of 1958 Memorial Scholarship Fund, we urge you to consider not only cash contributions but additional gifts such as appreciated stocks, bonds nearing maturity, and real property. Please note that gifts to the Class of 1958 Memorial Scholarship Fund are payable over a five-year period.

Finally, perhaps a planned gift would be an appealing way to contribute to the needs of the school. You may receive benefits from a life income gift (e.g., a charitable gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust). Consider also including NMH as a beneficiary in your will or living trust, or designating the school as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, an IRA, or other retirement plan.
You will hear more about those options from our planned giving cochairs later this year, and members of the NMH Advancement Office staff will be prepared to assist you with these decisions.

Our goal is to soundly beat the class of 1956’s 50th Reunion record of over $3 million with a cumulative gift of $4 million. We can do it with your help! As of November 1, the class giving total was nearly $2 million against our goal. This impressive figure is the combination of all our gifts since our 45th Reunion in 2003, including nine planned gifts totaling $1.5 million; ten capital gifts and pledges totaling just over $200,000; and four years of NMH Annual Fund contributions. Any gift or pledge you make to NMH, including planned gifts, will be counted in our 50th Reunion grand total, so please make a commitment that reflects your appreciation for NMH and the class of 1958.

Finally, we ask for more than your financial support. A large number of our classmates are planning to attend the reunion, and we ask you to schedule it now if you haven't already done so. Our reunion committee activity has brought together many of us who haven't seen one another for 50 years. We look forward to many more such renewals of friendship in June!
