Dear N `57 Classmate:
Less than four months to go on the countdown to one of the major milestones in our lives, the 50th reunion of our graduation from Northfield School for Girls. I truly hope to see you at reunion starting with a lobster dinner on Thursday, June 7, and ending with a service of worship on Sunday morning, June 10.
I have communicated with you about making a generous Annual Fund gift in honor of our 50th, and I’ve encouraged you to make a gift that includes “57” in the amount. Add as many zeros to the right of the “57” as you can.
Now, this letter communicates to you the idea that a planned gift is also something I hope you will consider. Last fall, one of our MH ‘57 classmates issued a challenge: He would designate NMH as a beneficiary of an IRA in the amount of $500,000 if (and here’s the catch) his classmates matched this amount through planned gifts before reunion weekend. Well, the “brothers” haven’t met the goal yet, so I asked if we could open up the challenge to the “sisters” of ‘57. The response was an enthusiastic YES! We can do this!!!
What is a planned gift? Basically, there are two categories. The first category is irrevocable in nature; that is, assets (usually cash or appreciated securities) are transferred to underwrite an income stream to you for the rest of your life (and often for a second person for life, normally a spouse). The income can be a fixed annuity, or it can be variable payments based on the market value’s ups and downs of the assets underwriting your cash flow. In addition to the income stream, you may claim a charitable deduction for tax purposes at roughly half the value of the assets transferred.
The second category is revocable arrangements. You might include NMH in your will or living trust, designate NMH as the beneficiary of an IRA or other qualified retirement plan, or designate NMH as beneficiary of a life insurance policy. These are revocable arrangements because you can change them at any time. All of these can be accomplished very easily. Add a codicil to your will or amend your living trust, neither of which should cost more than a few hundred dollars, if that. To designate NMH as beneficiary of some or all of an IRA or life insurance policy involves completing a new beneficiary designation form which will bear no cost.
If you already have an arrangement in place with NMH included, let NMH know because it can be counted toward the challenge.
Three of your “sisters” have completed planned gifts for the benefit of NMH. One did a charitable remainder trust, one has designated NMH as a beneficiary or her IRA, and the third has NMH named in her will. Come join the fun!!!
I am enclosing a brief booklet about “Ways to Give.” Look it over and see what might be of interest to you. It covers all the basic types of revocable and irrevocable planned gifts. By the way, a planned gift might save federal estate taxes and/or state death taxes.
Also enclosed is a response form. Please check off one or more of the options and return it to Marv Kelley ’60, senior gift planning advisor at the school. I have worked with Marv and know him to be very knowledgeable and sensitive to a prospective donor. He can be a great help as you ponder a new planned gift or choose to disclose an existing one.
One more important point that you should know. You may designate a planned gift to be added to our Class of 1957 Scholarship in honor of Al and Ginnie Raymond, or you may designate it for a purpose of your choosing, including no restrictions. Be sure to discuss this with Marv.
I’m excited about our 50th and hope you are, too! See you at NMH in June.
Think Spring! Warmly,
