Dear '62 classmate,
We are writing to invite each of you to save the date for our 45th reunion, June 7–10, 2007. We met with our Mount Hermon counterparts during Leadership Weekend, and, with the thoughtful leadership of reunion chair Toby Wesselhoeft, we all agreed how important this particular event is for our respective classes. Most important is bringing classmates together to keep our '62 community connected. Because of the closing of our campus since our 40th reunion, we decided to include two personal statements within this save-the-date message:
Arriving at Northfield Sept. 8 to check in at Gould before continuing across the river reminded me once again of how lovely and welcoming our campus is, despite being empty. It seems that the way I have come to grips with the loss of this beautiful place is by visiting it four times in the past three+ years. Hearing the quality of the singers and musicians and singing with the alum choir twice at Sacred Concert has been a very positive experience.
A second factor that allows me to bond with NMH today is the diversity, caliber, and community-mindedness of current students. They appear happy, well-mannered, articulate, and engaged in many activities. I listened closely as key staff were introduced Friday evening and noted that both the dean of faculty and dean of students are women. The increased sense of community by being on one campus was the predominant theme. Saturday evening a '66 alumna spoke briefly about being a new trustee and plans for improving the female-to-male ratio on that Board.
Sunday morning's convocation in full sunlight provided time for further observations and reflections upon present successes within the one campus. I decided that I will simply call the football field and track 'Siberia' and adapt to looking across to the hills in the east!

This fall surely finds us at a crossroads of memories and loyalties. So many changes have occurred in the school we love since our last reunion that it is almost impossible to track them.
Like many of us, I greeted news of the impending sale of the Northfield campus—OUR Northfield campus—with dismay. This came at a point in time when, finally emerging from years of trying to balance family and work, I had reconnected to so many of you, watering the roots and enjoying the blooms of our enduring friendships with such affection. Suddenly the place that had serendipitously brought us together so many years ago was to be ours no more. I was shocked, saddened, uncertain of the future of this “new” school and of our extended school community.
Two years hence, I am sitting on another campus, the Other Campus, with a few friends and classmates, hoping that I can explain why I am here (beyond savoring the delicious irony of being able to get lost on the Hermon campus after dark!!), tell you what I found, and persuade you to join me.
I decided to return, this time, almost wholly for the people. Seeing these few dear and familiar faces and continuing connections that began months ago over another (yes!) slice of Bishop’s bread, I realize that the embrace of my classmates is vital to me, even more so now, as life continues to proffer its challenging
transitions. I look around me and I am reassured. NMH, however repackaged and “new and improved,” is reaching back into its roots and traditions to provide focus, stability, and values for today’s adolescents. The students who spoke with us like it here, much as we once did. There are rules, there is spirit, there is learning, there is personal growth. Yes, there are new faces and buildings and traditions. There are new keepers. But, though the location may be different and the venue smaller, the heart remains.
It is that heart that creates and sustains our community. To remain in community we must nurture our togetherness and reunite periodically for the pleasure of remembrance and connection. The light from our lamps has lit many parts of our world since 1962; let us bring that lamplight home again and share in its warmth.

Along with gift chair Betty Allman Mitcheltree—and others on our reunion committee unable to attend Leadership Weekend—we dearly hope that you will join us in June 2007. Perhaps you will be able to assist with programs that will be of interest to members of our class and others.
Bring all of you: your then and your now, your memories and hopes and dreams. Let us share them together as we celebrate our precious community.
With our very warmest wishes, gratitude, and affection,
Kathe Dennison Chipman and Emily Zapata Doherty
