October 2006

Dear Classmates of ’62,

Fall greetings to you all as we in New England begrudgingly turn on the heat. We know for certain that autumn is upon us when we dust off the cider press to begin transforming summer's fruit into autumn's ambrosia. At NMH, apple cider and maple syrup have replaced "home-grown" milk as a campus product. Yes, some things have changed, but many others remain the same.

This was clearly apparent in early September when a handful of classmates and we stepped into the chapel, where the entire student body snugly fits for the first time since the merger of 1972. There, eight four-year seniors spoke with great candor about the transition of the last three years; to a person, they touted the one-campus model as instantly intensifying community. The energy and friendliness on campus were clearly palpable, and students ascribed this to seeing their friends more easily. In short, the intimacy created both between students and faculty is already showing dividends.

Come see for yourselves and compare to the last time you were back! Although our classmate and previous head of school is no longer there to greet us, an impressive array of educators are. Here is a snapshot of what you can expect, during the span of June 7–10, 2007.

With the closing of the Northfield campus, we will be staying at Mount Hermon. We have reserved a boat ride on the Connecticut River on Saturday afternoon for our class only. We're hoping to do some tree dedications at the ’62 Grove (or possibly in conjunction with the new arts center). Our classmate remembrance service will take place Sunday at 8 am at the ’62 Grove.

We are toying with creating a presentation/display of class memorabilia, with the help of school archivist Peter Weis ’78. We also hope to have an updated (i.e., digitized) version of Jock's slideshow on hand. We invite one and all to dig deep to send photos, slides, and/or CDs to our class secretary, Scott Calvert, at:
 8714 2nd Avenue
 Silver Spring, MD 20910
 E-mail:scalvert@his.com

Look at this as a great opportunity to clean out your attic and share beloved mementos that you know will be cared for!

Finally, Jock has agreed to lighten my burden by sharing the role of reunion cochair. He is well prepared for this and is currently a member of the Alumni Council's reunion advisory committee. We are blessed as well with a very capable group of veterans from both sides of the river to carry this out.

Blessings to you all,
