Class of ’57 Reunion Survey
Prior to the 50th Reunion in June, Northfield women and Mount Hermon men of the Class of 1957 were invited to participate in a confidential online survey to examine attitudes and experiences at the school, as well as issues relating to family, politics, travel, health, civics, career and hobbies. There were responses from 63 women and 56 men of the class. The survey was developed and administered by David Hamilton, ’57.
Clicking on any of the first three following links will take you to a graphic summary of the responses:
Some of the questions and answers did not lend themselves to a graphic summary and are best described here. To the question of what is the longest number of years you have been married to one spouse the average answer was 41 years, with four answering 48 years for the longest and one answering three years for the shortest. As to the question about the number of children the answers averaged 2 ½ , with the highest answer being six children. The number of grandchildren averaged four, with two answers indicating a high of six, although one Hermonite, who hadn’t filled out the survey, claimed at the reunion he has 21! Two responders admitted to having a great-grandchild. The responses to the question of the number of countries visited averaged 24. The highest answer was 76, although a couple of people probably exceeded that but couldn’t bring themselves to actually count them up.
The following links will take you to the individual responses for the open-ended “other” and essay-type questions:
- Regarding the issue of global warming, which response best reflects your thinking?
- Have you lived in a foreign country for more than four months? When and where?
- Have you been afflicted with any of the following major ailments?
- Have you ever held elected or appointed office?
- In what field has been your primary career or life work?
- What are your primary hobbies/activities?
- The most significant change(s) in your life over the past five years:
- The most delightful aspect(s) of being where you are in life:
- And the most troubling aspect(s):
- Something(s) you’re doing to stay sharp forever:
- Something new you’ve taken up in the past five years:
- A question that wasn’t asked and your answer (specify Q. and A.):
The final question was: How satisfied are you with your life to date? 72% were Very Satisfied and 26.3% were Somewhat Satisfied. One person was Neutral, two were Somewhat Dissatisfied and no one was Very Dissatisfied. One would like to think that Northfield Mount Hermon had something to do with the high rate of satisfaction the class has experienced in their lives.
