Class of `60 November Letter
November 30, 2007Dear Classmate:
Our 50th reunion is almost here! It’s hard to believe, but in about 30 months we’ll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of our graduation from NMH. The reminiscing, rekindling, reflection and rejoicing evoked by NMH’s 50th reunions are legendary. There is no reunion like the 50th, and there is no class like the Great Class of 1960, so this will truly be a once-in-a lifetime event!
Our goals for the 50th reunion are to set a new standard of attendance, as well as raise the bar for a total 50th reunion gift. To do so, we need your help.
Our 50th reunion gift is made up of all gifts received between our 45th reunion and our 50th reunion. Gifts fall into three categories:
- The NMH Annual Fund which is top priority (it supports the operating budget)
- Capital gifts and pledges for any capital purpose (we encourage designation of capital gifts to the Great Class of 1960 Endowed Scholarship Fund)
- Planned gifts
As we recently announced to the class, two of our classmates have stepped up to challenge the rest of us and raise our sights for the total 50th reunion gift.
Bucket #1
Conrad Plimpton’s challenge: He will give $100,000 if the class gives at least $200,000 to the
Annual Fund. We have two fiscal years to meet this challenge, with the challenge ending June 30, 2009. Based on our class’ total support of the Annual Fund the past two years, we can meet Conrad’s challenge in fiscal years ’08 and ’09 as long as previous donors increase their giving and we line up some new donors. We are asking for two-year pledges – please see the enclosed pledge form.
Bucket #2
Albie Booth’s challenge: He will give $50,000 if the rest of the class gives/pledges at least $100,000 for our class scholarship fund. This mini-campaign also runs for the same two fiscal years with a deadline of June 30, 2009. Because support of our scholarship involves capital gifts, pledges payable for up to five years will count even if the pledge is made by the June 30, 2009 deadline. In other words, cash in and remaining pledge balances as of June 30, 2009 will count toward Albie’s challenge. Please use the enclosed pledge form to participate in this challenge to add significantly to our scholarship fund.
Bucket #3
We hope to announce a planned giving challenge. Meanwhile, bear in mind that planned gifts have represented well over half of 50th reunion class gifts in recent years. All types of planned gifts will count. Life-income gifts can supplement your retirement income and provide very attractive tax benefits. Making NMH the owner and beneficiary of many types of life insurance can lead to a tax deduction. Charitable lead trusts provide huge gift and estate tax savings. The most common kind of planned gifts are revocable in nature. These include bequest intentions by will or living trust, naming NMH as a beneficiary of an IRA or other retirement plan, or naming NMH as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy (but retaining ownership). If NMH is already included in your estate plan in any way, please note that on the response form. Otherwise, we ask you – no, we urge you – to learn more about and consider planned gifts. Enclosed is a booklet describing ways to make planned gifts. You also can request additional information using the response form.
Let’s demonstrate why we are called the Great Class of 1960 at our 50th reunion in June 2010 by setting new standards for attendance and giving. Please give both of these goals your serious consideration and complete the response form thoughtfully and generously. Thank you!
Sincerely and with gratitude,
Kathy Oakley ’60 Marv Kelley ’60
