Class of '56
November 2007Greetings Northfielders ‘56 of NMH!
The momentum of our Northfield beginnings and the 50th Reunion continue to create good times among us as well as support for our alma mater. Our bonds are strong and the roots deep. Read the words on the opening page of the beautiful brochure (complete with DVD), sent this year to prospective NMH students:
“At Northfield Mount Hermon we do more than prepare young people for college. We prepare them to lead purposeful lives. Our mission is threefold:
- To awaken in our students a love of learning
- To foster their spiritual and social growth
- To cultivate responsibility through our work, outreach, and service programs
An education for the head, heart, and hand: this was a key focus of D.L. Moody when he founded the school more than 125 years ago, and it is our goal today.”
The move to one campus has strengthened programs which worked well in our day: mandatory, weekly student body gatherings in the chapel; domestic work; Mountain Day; Christmas Vespers; and Sacred Concert to name a few. Enrollment is on target and the quality of the students is better than ever. Diversity is greater than it was in our day with 30 states and 23 countries represented. 20% of the student body is international. Graduates of the class of 2007 are represented at all the Ivy League Schools and many of those top students were four-year NMH students. NMH is currently strengthening and enlarging the freshmen experience, housing all freshmen together as it was in our time.
The new Rhodes Center for the Arts will open in 2008 and it is our hope to have a Class of ’56 mini-reunion to celebrate the new center along with a lobster bake in Northfield at the Lebo’s (Nelson MH ’56) home. While we are able, let us continue to create and strengthen our friendships and connection to NMH, with gatherings large and small and, of course, with our financial support.
Here is a photo of one recent get together at Benita Pierce’s:
Our class is the best; just look at these statistics:
For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007, the Class of '56 was the top class in dollars donated to the Annual Fund! Our total was $134,100 (Nfld: $33,400; MH: $100,700). Second place was Class of '59 with $131,500. The 50th Reunion class ('57) donated just over $97,000 to the Annual Fund but, of course, they were busy funding a Class Scholarship, designating NMH in their Estate Planning, etc., etc., so their overall "class gift" was just over $2 million (vs our $3 million in 2006). Thus, in total dollars, Class of '57 was tops, but in Annual Fund dollars we were tops for this past year.
Within the next few weeks you will receive a call from a classmate urging you to make a donation to the NMH Annual Fund, the fund that pays for the day-to-day expenses of running our fine school. It is our goal to have all the fundraising completed before the holidays but that does not mean you have to give your money immediately. For tax purposes or other reasons you may wish to postpone your donation to 2008. (The NMH fiscal year runs from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008.) You can make a pledge noting when you want to donate the amount you specify or, easier than that, you can donate using your Visa, Mastercard, or American Express card specifying which month or months you would like an amount to be charged to your account.
Northfield meant a lot to each of us. Admittedly the school has changed in 50 or more years, but so has the world. Northfield Mount Hermon is providing superior educations to over 600 impressive young people each year. Please join the rest of us from the Class of '56 by sending a donation to show your support. Let your heart guide your hand (toward your checkbook) and your head will feel so much better!
Sincerely,

Benita Pierce Dorrie Susser Caro Peterson
