Class of '56
November 2007Dear Mount Hermon ’56 classmates,
Each year, as the foliage is turning in New England, we write to encourage your support for the NMH Annual Fund. We are proud of the response in recent years and we hasten to thank those who have opened their checkbook for this cause.
Before focusing on that message once again, we’d like to share some thoughts with you.
Mount Hermon School in the mid-50s was a wonderful place. We each have our own memories and, reading the responses from the 50th reunion yearbook, those memories are colorful, vivid and (for the most part) positive.
Northfield Mount Hermon School in 2007 is a marvelous place. The consolidation to one campus was a difficult but necessary move. It’s done and (in our opinion) the school is stronger today than ever in its 125+ year history. There are 620 students attending this year (from 30 states and 23 countries). The quality of students is impressive. Last year, our Class of 1956 Scholarship Fund (established during our 50th Reunion; current value > $215,000) provided scholarship dollars to freshman Svetlana, an honor roll student from Andover MA. This year’s recipient has yet to be named.

The administration is working diligently to build the financial strength of the school. The new arts center, located where Recitation Hall stood in the mid-50s, will open next fall. A new admissions building is planned between the south end of Alumni Hall (West Hall) and Memorial Chapel. The School’s endowment (currently $167 million) has literally doubled in the past 8 years but still lags behind many peer schools.
NMH’s annual operating budget is approaching $30 million. And this is where the Annual Fund comes in. Tuition (now @ $39,000) does not fully cover the operating costs. This year the school needs $3.5 million in Annual Fund gifts to balance the budget.
1956: $134,037
The Class of ’56 has been a generous contributor to the NMH Annual Fund. Last fiscal year (which ended 6/30/07) we were the top class of the 68 classes (classes from 2007 back to 1940) now supporting the Annual Fund. Our gifts totaled $134,037.(Note: accompanying graphs show only the oldest 41 classes.)
Recently, you received the brochure from the school announcing the fiscal year 2008 NMH Annual Fund. Perhaps you have already responded; if so, great. But if you have set it aside, we’re asking that you bring it to the top of your to-do list.
If you have been giving in recent years, we ask you to fill out a pledge of your commitment and mail it in now. If your budget permits, we ask that you kick it up a notch from last year.
If you have not given to the school in a while, we ask that you rejoin your classmates in sending a strong message of support from the Class of 1956.
If you have not been a giver in the past, we hope you will consider joining us this year.
Last year, we (including Northfield ’56) had 120 donors. This tied us for fourth among all NMH classes in level of participation.
Our goal this year is to work the numbers upward… both “dollars donated” and “number of donors”.
Mount Hermon meant a lot to each of us. Admittedly the school has changed in 50 plus years but so has the world. Northfield Mount Hermon is providing a superior education to more than 600 impressive young people each year. Please join the rest of us from the Class of ’56 by sending a donation to show your support. Let your heart guide your hand (toward your checkbook) and your head will feel so much better.
